Butterfly, I put a square table next to my front door and my mailman and other shippers know to deliver my packages there. I open the boxes and easily carry individual items into the house. I flatten the boxes and put them in the recycling bin without ever carrying them inside.
I buy King Arthur Organic Flour, all-purpose, white whole wheat and bread flour, at Amazon. The only place in town I've found KAF organic (and only all-purpose) is Keller's and they want too much for it there. If I order directly from KAF, they charge a whopping shipping charge from Vermont. So Amazon it is. I have Prime so no extra shipping and KAF flour is part of their Prime Pantry program. Amazon also carries a great selection of Bob's Red Mill products and I buy lots of that brand. I buy most of my meat from Keller's.
I recently bought a dozen organic lemons through Amazon. They were packed amazingly well and were very cold when I got them. They were gorgeous, fresh, juicy lemons. If you don't care about organic produce, Amazon also sells non-organic produce. After my experience with the lemons, I won't hesitate to buy that way. I paid a premium for shipping, but the only place I find organic lemons is Natural Grocer and I could not get there at the time (injured toe and limited walking). The lemons at Natural Grocer cost more, but without the shipping charges.
I won't shop at Sprout's because they do things like spray-paint their eggs brown, something I discovered when I hard-boiled some and voila they were suddenly white. I don't trust Sprouts as far as I can throw them and I know a lot more about them than I'm saying here.
I buy some produce at the little Walmart neighborhood store at Menaul and Juan Tabo because it's close to home, easy walking distance. I've bought some really nice organic lemons there and they nearly always have organic potatoes and apples. (I don't buy everything organic, only those things on the Dirty Dozen list except that I also don't eat non-organic root crops. I buy KAF's organic flour because it produces superior baked goods, much better than conventional flour.) I like Natural Grocers and Smith's, but Smith's selection is more limited. Between Albertson's and Smith's I had delicious organic berries all summer.
I buy quite a few things online from Walmart and Target. They're both trying hard to get a toehold in the online market. Walmart hasn't figured out how to package things as well as Amazon but so far nothing has been broken. Walmart and Target both have a much better selection online than in their stores. Shipping is free if you buy more than $35. Walmart is selling via other retailers like Amazon does, using the same model. I bought an Oster microwave at Target recently that was the model I wanted for a much lower price than anywhere else. They have great specials on appliances. I comparison shop between the online stores and local stores, excluding heavy things which I gratefully let them ship to me. Generally I've found the online prices to be better, with a few exceptions. I think the local retailers are feeling the pinch because they seem to be lowering their prices and having sales on the things people actually buy, for a change.
