Teacher grabs hijab off students head.

A Virginia school district has placed a teacher on leave for removing a student’s hijab from her head. The student took to Twitter after the incident Wednesday saying that her hijab was “ripped off her head” by a teacher she appreciated and valued, according to WJLA.
An account that appears to belong to the student said she was talking with her friend when the teacher pulled off her hijab from behind. To her shock, he then said: “Oh, your hair is so pretty,” she said on Twitter.

Teachers need to keep their hands to themselves. HOWEVER, religious articles of clothing should not be at schools. Students are not there to learn religion. That is what church and parents are for. NOT TEACHERS.

What are your thoughts on this?

As you can see they are all wearing a version of the official school uniform. A few have short skirts and others are wearing longer skirts or long pants. It is their choice according to their cultural or religious custom. The hijabs are not compulsory but a choice made by some Muslim girls. The school is harmonious and has a good academic record.

Teachers have enough to worry about just getting through the curriculum and maintaining orderly classrooms. Removing a hijab from the head of a young girl is not only inappropriate and arguably physical assault, it is counter productive to good order.

I concur.
 
Hands off students should be the number one rule. This includes "corporal punishment". Do NOT touch kids that are not yours. TEACH. Keep your hands off them. Period.

With that said..keep your turbans at home along with your crucifixes, jewish caps, etc. Wear them on your own time..NOT at school.
 
What about the length of the garments? Must that be regulated too? Muslims wear longer skirts and long sleeves. It that OK?
Must every little boy have a short haircut because long hair worn in a top knot is an outward sign of a Sikh?

This whole area is a minefield of contradictions. It is a sleeping dragon that is best left in peace.

I agree. Religious freedom.
 
Absolutely inappropriate; the teacher should be fired immediately.

However, this whole hijab question, and where it fits into the dress code, is a "can of worms" issue. Many schools all over the world do have a dress code, requiring the students to wear uniforms, for instance, or forbidding things like gang-related t-shirts, etc. So where do we draw the line? Must everybody adhere to the school's regulations except those who claim religious exemptions?

King Solomon is needed to solve this one!
 
In "real life" people are going to wear religious articles, so why try to keep students in some kind of artificial social environment?

How about cultivating a tolerant school environment, so students will be prepared for the Real World?

Looks to me that the Virginia teacher's own religious intolerance caused her to assault this girl. The girl will never forget the hostility and assault upon her.

The teacher should be fired, and banned from teaching anywhere ever again.
 
Muslims will turn government schools into their own religious schools if we allow it. Expel those who wear their Islamic religious garb.

Being fearful of people's differences need not consume one's rational mind, and drive them to advocate taking away the constitutional rights of their fellow citizens.
 
As to the hijab itself, I read somewhere and saw an interview with a muslim woman on tv that head coverings are not a requirement per the Koran. It was adopted by followers all on their own, as a custom- not as an expression of religion. Many muslim women are not even aware of this and believe it to be a law of their religion.

IMO, the teacher had no business removing it.

So you're saying kids can't wear necklaces with crosses?
 
There are differences between public schools, private schools, religious schools. They all have their own idea of what is right and what to wear.

Public schools must follow city, state, or federal rules. They must satisfy the taxpayers who do pay for their existence.

Private schools must also follow city, state, or federal rules, and also any private school rules for students and teachers that also usually need to get permission from the teaching controllers of their teaching areas. They can be different from the public schools as long as they meet the standards for teaching and the learning of the students. Often call for dress calls for both boys and girls.

Religious schools are much like the private school systems and often include special religious efforts into the daily role of teaching. Dress code is often needed in religious schools.

I personally believe that a teacher should be expected to maintain those special standards for any school they do teach at. Nothing wrong with expecting all students to follow the rules of the school they are attending. It is a skill that all schools should teach. That is something we all need to learn as we grow up. Obedience is not a dirty word.

True, my grandson wasn't allowed to wear anything red in his Public High School because it was affiliated with certain gangs in CA.
There were some other restrictions but I can't remember them at the moment.
 
Take the religion out of it, and think about this. An adult pulls off an article of personal clothing on a minor, and PLAYS WITH HER HAIR.

How would you feel if that was your daughter or your sister, your niece or your granddaughter?

No adult has ANY right to put unwanted, intrusive hands on ANY minor, in a social setting. And school, more than anything else, IS a social setting. This was not a disciplinary incident in any manner. There is no mention in the article that the girl was breaking or even stretching the school's dress code.

I agree, this was assault. Such an individual should have their teachers license revoked.

Its a slippery slope. If ANY religious apparel or aspect is not allowed in schools, that includes ANY Religious icon or garment or accessory.
Hey, don't blame me for this crap. It all started when some idiot got offended at the ten commandments and had all that removed from schools, court houses, etc. Quid pro quo. No christian stuff? Ok. No raghead stuff either. Howzat?
