Crossing the continent on foot - with a toddler

I think it depends on the parents and it depends on the kid!

I would much rather see a story about a happy toddler traveling with her parents than a story about parents who abandon, neglect or abuse their children.

She looks happy and well cared for to me.

Yes she does but the Outback claims many lives due to its remoteness from help when needed and the very severe conditions.

Does the Outback claim more lives than city life?

I like to believe that her parents took reasonable precautions but I suppose we have no way of knowing.

I guess I see a different story and that's ok.
 
I think they are responsible parents but that is an unforgiving place for adults, let alone a small human. Think of Death Valley laid out flat and stretching for over 1000 kilometres.

Given that the Outback is mostly uninhabited it could be argued that the premature death toll per rata is higher than city life but I haven't got convenient figures to back that up.

It's odd that you would ask what we think in the OP and then criticize those thoughts.

I don't get it, it's just my opinion.
 
If this area is anything like Death Valley, I don't think a child should be out there. The photo was probably taken at the beginning of the trip. Just my opinion, but I'd like to see a photo of the child (and the parents) a few days into the journey. Also, I didn't click on the link as I've used my internet data up for the month and am on a very slow speed till Dec 16th.

If you do click on the link when you can, you will see that both parents and baby look happy, healthy, and energetic. The kid is as cute as the dickens, obviously a very happy and much-loved child.

I do have to wonder what precautions they had in place for illness or accidents. I can't believe they got cell phone reception out there. What if a real emergency happened?
 
I don't know Sunny. Cell phone reception only works when in one of the small towns out there and they are strung out along the roads. When driving out there if you break down you are advised to stay with the vehicle on the road because something will come along eventually and rescue you. You need plenty of water and probably have to shelter in the shade of the vehicle, or under it. As far as I can tell these people were off road.

Some kind of satellite communication is possible now, with inbuilt GPS, so it is possible that communications can be maintained with a base and if necessary, the Flying Doctor. Much the same as a lone sailor at sea I suppose but I don't know how heavy that stuff is to lug along in a cart.
