Another thread closed, when the discussion was nothing more than aspects of of a current issue, facing us all . Burying our heads in the sand is not going to correct anything.

All aspects of an issue need to be considered, if we as a nation are ever going to make a collective difference.

RGP, I agree. The problem is that some aspects of the problem seriously P.O. certain people. They then feel a need to attack people, by name. Some posts got particularly nasty at the end. That, IMO is why the thread was closed.

What thread was closed? Am I clueless or what? Okay it was mine. On the Parkland school shooting. We need to keep politics out of our arguments otherwise we will lose interesting threads.

I must have missed the 'nasty' part ?

NO POLITICS HERE! Simple!!

If that is the case, then NO issue facing law enforcement & or legislation should ever be posted.

Discussing the school shooting, someone mentioned changing gun laws....How in the world can we discuss that without politics entering into it ? That IS a political hot potato ! All over the news as we speak

Only expressing sorrow & condolences , is not discussing the issue . And when sorrow & condolences are noted....sooner or later someone will say / ask, how can we stop this madness........here comes politics.

My suggestion is this....the next time it happens....and it will [unless a solution is found] through thorough discussion . I suggest it not even be noted/posted at all.

Start by not mentioning a political party, congress, the senate, Trump or his predecessors.

Stay away from placing blame.

Focus on the issue and what can be done to solve it.

I've been watching the kids in Florida that are launching the protest, so far they seem to be taking the high road and offering some reasonable ideas for constructive change.

Rather a thorny issue. When we discuss the killings in Florida, that will invariably lead to discussion of guns, which in turn, leads to changing the gun laws, which leads to discussion of the 2nd Amendment and when that happens we are smack in the middle of politics.

Likewise, if we discuss other possible reasons why young men are too often becoming ultra-violent, we must, at least, consider the possibility that part of the answer lies within the family unit and the lack of proper supervision. As we have seen, that offends a few people. For obvious reasons, that is VERY political.

Whether we like it or not, almost any serious discussion of important social issues is political.
It is hard to imagine any discussion of civil rights not being political.

I do not suggest, or imply, a changing of the site's rules. I merely point out that people feel very passionately about a broad spectrum of issues, which are, by their very nature, political.

And I think those kids are incredibly wonderful. Probably this issue will never be solved until the old folks, with their entrenched ideas, pass on, leaving these clear-eyed young people to take over.

yeah right...which will probably happen right after they pay off their student loans.

I think one of the biggest issues we have is with the media. Back in the 90's when Clinton was POTUS a new telecommunications act was enacted and it allowed for cross ownership and consolidation of media/news outlets. Since then the major news sources are controlled by a handful of people and in many ways they have become more propaganda networks than news outlets. They seem to have their own agenda(s) and one can only guess what they might be... but the divisiveness within this country is in no small part a result of it. Today we have victimology (or whatever you want to call it) where there are multiple groups that function in no small part as hate groups with demands, protest, vile insults, violence or threats of violence, etc; all fueled by the media. As often as not when one takes the time to do their own research the "media view" is more than biased, it is an out-an-out lie. This is a bad situation and is right out of the playbook of those that want to partial destroy a country so they can take over... don't know if that is what all this is about or not, but it's scary stuff.

I think we should be able to discuss current issues but as soon as someone makes a personal comment it should be deleted.
Without being able to discuss current issues the forum loses its flavour.

That is the problem, some posters just won't leave it alone!!

It appears that my posts about the weapons and what they legally do look to be the reason it was called political. I tried hard to never call any action to be political party this or that to avoid the political party claim. Far too much being charged against a legally defined and sold guns. All those sold through our gun control system are legal, controlled to not be full automatic. It seems that not many really understand that our gun laws are pretty good and not much can be added but remove the idea of guns from the US citizens completely.

Today, on NBC news I heard what must be the trigger to all this blaming the guns or our gun laws. It is known as the 'Bump Stock' that someone created that will be available for interested to buy and add to the weapon to be used. That one item turns that gun into an illegal gun that can now fire in 'full automatic' mode as long as the trigger is held.

It is time for our gun laws to be challenged about additions to the weapon that can make them illegal. Our current system of selling only 'semi automatic' is doing its job and it is work of other people that have decided to violate the federal gun laws.

I never meant my inputs to be political and tried to word to avoid such. I blamed the people for not understanding what they were asking for. That is a comment and not a political issue. Our gun laws are OK as they are written. Adding more words to defend the law from others efforts to add too or modify the guns to go beyond the legal limits is a problem. I hope the President will be able to explain that to his visitors wanting to change the laws. No need to change the laws but likely some words to keep the laws OK but stop additions or changes that allow the guns to become illegal. Maybe a good 'hurt in the pocket' for illegal changes would be good.

Bob I belong to another forum which is all political. Threads there get deleted and not left to view either. They are gone never to be seen again.

Camper, I couldn't agree more.

I couldn't agree more. Exactly right !

I heard that the Florida shooter, Cruz was it?, is about to inherit $800K. Really? If this is true, make him use it on his lawyers.
