Had a person at door trying to sell food..from a truck

I have had solicitors coming to the door before, but this was a first. A man knocked at the door, and when I answered he said he was a vendor who sold frozen meats and foods and was in the neighborhood seeing if anyone else wanted to be a part of the program. The truck and pictures of meats on the side and back, but no logo that I could see.
He was a bit vague about what they sold, had no literature or price list, and would not say who in the neighborhood were customers (though he said they delivered here). I had no plans to investigate more, but asked the questions just to get a handle on who he was.
Told him no. Looked outside later and saw him a couple doors down at another neighbor..great guy who keeps up his own watch on the hood. Would have loved to see how THAT went as that neighbor is not shy about telling salesmen they are not welcome.

This would never happen to me since I live in an apt building, but I would of asked for some ID before I would even open the door.If he couldn't take the hint,I would of called the cops. Sue

I've had people come to the door trying to sell steaks, lobster tails and oranges in the past but I always pass.

I'm not about to buy any food item from some door to door salesman or one of those trucks setup in a parking lot especially meat and seafood.....how do you know "For Sure" how many times that the meat and seafood has been thawed and refrozen ?

Walmart has a fast turn over on food items so you wouldn't think that food sits on the shelf too long but just a couple of years back mama bought a pork loin and it had a noticeable sour / spoiled smell to it when she got it home and was repackaging it for the freezer......she took it back for a full refund and was also given a $100.00 store gift certificate which I suppose in a round about way was "hush money". :)

I have solicitors too, who are walking house to house selling religion, their lawn care services, & God only knows what else. They ring the bell and stand there for an eternity, talking if they are with another coworker solicitor.....they eventually walk away since I'm not going to open the door, no way, no how. The days of going door to door have been over for a while....just like there are no more trick or treaters walking around the neighborhoods either.

.

Be careful. Don't open your door to strangers and always lock your car door.

Our neighborhood has an internet discussion blog.

Recently one neighbor said she saw a guy going down the street trying to open car doors.

There have been recent crimes in other parts of the city involving criminals going around
shopping parking lots checking car doors. If a criminal finds one open, he gets inside and
hides until the owner gets in the car. Then the criminal robs the owner sometimes forcing
him to an ATM or back to his home to be robbed.

Here is a recent local news report.

We get sales people here ,even though we have a big NO SOLICITING sign right on the door. I always point out the sign to them and they act surprised that it's meant for them. DUH .

I've seen these Schwan's trucks around the neighborhood, but I think people order from them, they don't just ring your bell. Many times I get guys who only have a box in the bed of their pickup trucks, ringing my bell and trying to get me to buy their steaks. I've always refused, I don't know where they got the meat, or how well it's been kept. I'd rather buy my steaks from a supermarket or butcher. Pretty much anyone going door to door trying to sell me their services or products gets a no, too many scammers around. It's easy enough to research companies when you're ready to purchase something.

I would like to see a "Food Handling" certificate and
a food processing certificate, also a look inside the
van, a letterhead if there is no name on the van, then
tell him that I will think about it, if he is genuine, then
he will call again in one week.

In the meantime, you are doing your "Due Diligence" and
checking them out.

We have them here, but they have writing on the vehicles,
except the egg man, he has been doing it for so long we all
know who he is, but there are Organic farmers, diet people
who put together a menu for a week or two, all of the above
is fresh, not frozen.

They DO NOT knock doors for business, they may put a leaflet
through your door, but you have to contact the company on the
phone or computer to place an order.

Cold calling either on the phone or door knocking is outlawed here.

Be very careful Marie and check everything.

Mike.

I've had people come around in a truck selling meat as well... No No No right off the bat.
We have put No trespassing signs at all three drive ways. They tend to drive right up in our yard right to the front porch, I say "Uh do you know you just ran over my septic tank?"
Even the new mail Lady did it.
A big bad dog will put a stop to most of it.;)

Normally I am more cautious, especially when I am home alone. Thing is, at first I thought it was my cousin come to visit..looked just like him. Only opened door as far as chain would hold. Told him no right off.
I kind of wish we had a neighborhood FB page.

I used to use Schwann and you ordered online. I stopped as the packages are so big for just me and I could not use it up before I got tired of it. The only crime we have had here in our condo area is people leaving their cars unlocked and cd's etc being taken. I always lock my car and both my doors and don't open to just anybody. Our condos are regulated pretty well with renters and owners subject to background checks and sex offender checks. You don't play loud music that offends anyone or have large dogs. You pick up after your dogs or you get fined. We have a retired Houston police officer that is our security officer and he makes rounds. I feel pretty safe here. I also have a gun with a permit I keep altho nobody knows I have one.

When we lived in AZ there was some guys going around in a truck selling meat. When they saw me writing down their license number, they burned rubber getting out of there.

Here's my sign:

1. I don't have any money.

2 I don't need anything.

3. I already have cable.

4. I've made my mind up who I'm going to vote for.

5. I already have a personal relationship with Jesus.

6. The whales are on their own.

7. My driveway is just fine.

8. No magazines, please.

10. I'm delighted that your band is going to the Rose Bowl Parade, but I still don't have any money.

11. I have enough wrapping paper to last me for the next 327 Christmases.

12. No, really, I don't want to discuss my eternal soul.

So, if you aren't selling Girl Scout cookies, don't even think about ringing that doorbell......

Great tip!!!

These days just pulling out your cell phone and pointing it at a vehicle or a stranger can work wonders, even if you don't bother taking a picture!

Once every year or so, we get a guy in a white pick up, with a chest freezer and a generator.
We have a long drive so I can meet folks before they get out of their vehicles.
Last summer I made an obvious display of photographing him and his truck. It did not deter him in his pitch or he was just brazen enough to carry on. I refused, asked him not to come back, and he left.

I have the same concerns as most about food safety and handling. I just kind of assumed it is stolen meat.

I just remembered this .... one time long ago a refrigerated truck pulled in our driveway , and a guy and a girl came to our door selling meat. They brought in an armload of meat to show us what they are selling. It looked really good and for $100 ,we could buy all this meat. Back then we didn't have alot of money , so because we hemmed and hawed , they went out and brought in an armload of chicken that they'd throw in. I asked why and they said "we didn't sell our quota of meat today,so we're trying to get rid of as much as we can before we bring the truck back". We took a chance and said okay. The girl even offered to stock our freezer for us , but we said no. I wrote a check out to the company , it was cashed and the meat turned out to be awesome. I don't understand the whole thing. Was it a stolen truck ? Stolen meat ? Why did a legit company cash the check ? That was way before I had a computer to search about it. It worked out that time - we were both dumb and lucky ,but I'd never do that again !

Sounds like something involved in this was stolen. I would be extremely leery of any such door-to-door selling of food. You don't even know what you're getting!

My city has had 7 carjackings in the past 6 weeks in broad day light, too. I have been cautious as the last car was a 2000 toyota. Who would want that? So, as mine is a 1999 I am careful, the theives will steel anything.

Back to the solicitors: I don't get any because I live in an apt. building and we have a no solicitors sign. Every once in a blue moon one sneaks in and gets shown the door rather quickly.
