Anyone bought a mattress lately?

My back is telling me that it's time for a new mattress. Looking online to see what's out there, I'm getting more and more confused. There is a wide range of prices, most of them say they are some variety of "firm," and I don't know which is better, foam gel or innerspring. Serta seems to get good ratings, and I know they've been around long. I like a firm mattress, but there is such a thing as too firm. So, if I buy it online, how do I know what I'm getting?

Does anyone have any advice for me?

I wouldn't buy one on line. I'd go to the store and actually lay down on them. Buy one that suited me and have it delivered to my home (Also with new innersprings.) and carry the old ones away.

I've never understood why mattresses are so expensive.

$800 for a cloth bag with some foam and springs in it?

For that price I could buy a recliner that massages me, warms me and holds my cold drink. And yes, I could sleep in it.

Hi Sunny, my daughter recently purchased a foam mattress by Lull and she is very pleased with it. I decided I too needed a new mattress but wanted to be more traditional and decided to go to a mattress store to have a look. Ended up buying a BeautyRest. I have I believe 90 days to try it out, if not happy they will refund me and take the mattress back. My daughter has something similiar, can return and they will arrange to pick it up. Because there are so many different options now. to me it made it more confusing.

I wouldn't buy one online, either. This is something you need to try out in person. Besides which, if you buy one online, do they just leave it in a big box on your porch? In a million years I could never get the thing in the house, get the old one out of the house, and put the new one on the frame. And what do you do with the old one? I bought a new one a few years ago and they brought it, set it up, took the old one away. They had two trucks -- one to bring the new one and one to carry off the old one. They said they never put old mattresses in the same truck as new ones, to prevent possible cross contamination with bed bugs in case there were any on an old mattress. Good idea!

That's another thing I wonder about - these 90-day guarantees ... what do they do with the mattress that you decide you don't like? Surely they don't throw it away.

Our body parts are beginning to get persnickety and the wife had to use more and more pillows to adjust legs, knees and things so they didn't hurt. We went to Banner Mattress and found an adjustable split King (non gel, non foam), our sides adjust independently. We also highly recommend going to the store to sit, touch and lay on prospective purchases. So far, except for the bed being a bit high off the ground, we really like it. Being able to adjust upper and lower, she's been able to reduce the number of pillows she uses. I don't use the adjustments much now but like knowing they're available as my old bones and joints age .

An adjustable bed has to be heaven, especially with the right mattress!

In our area, Phil, I understand that they are in contact with shelters for homeless and other unfortunates and these shelters will pick up the mattress and if it's still serviceable, use it. if not they will trundle it off to the local dump. I think that it's doable because there are so few returned. As for your old mattress and box spring, you just notify the city and have it out front by 7AM and sometime in the morning it just disappears. Pretty simple arrangement.

FWIW, yes, I bought a mattress recently. But I prefer firm, because I like to sleep on my stomach. It was an extra firm Sealy Posturpedic innerspring. Cost around $500 I think. Have tried memory foam. Never again. Too hot and don't like climbing out of the cavities it leaves whenever you move. The only other option I might try, besides an innerspring, is a thin firm latex (say 4") on top of a solid bottom, like plywood.

We bought a new mattress a couple months ago. It was from one of those places with no sales people. It was nice to just flop on the beds on see what feels good and not worry about anyone watching you !!! Most of the mattresses were the "pillow top" kind ....Very thick . Some of them were so thick & high - it took me a little jump to get on them ! We didn't want those thick mattresses , so we found a regular size, comfy mattress that we loved ($395) The problem is finding sheets
for it !!! It's only 10" thick ... like the old mattresses were. Believe it or not --- it's almost impossible to find fitted sheets with a "10" drop" . Everything is "deep pocket" sheets now . I ended up ordering sheets directly from India ! Even they don't stay tucked under the corners , but it's the best I can find. I've wasted so much money on sheets so far ~~~~

Thanks to all for sharing your information with me. It's very helpful in making my decision. (I'm still making it.) Today I went to a mattress store and tried out several, and they all felt good. The prices varied tremendously. Some of them are as high as $3000-$4000! I can't imagine paying that much for a mattress.

Nancy, I was particularly interested in your experience. The saleswoman today was trying very hard to sell me on a memory foam mattress. After reading your story, I think I'll stick with a "firm" or "luxury firm" innerspring.

The thing I like about latex...it will always spring back instantly when you put a dent in it, unlike memory foam. It takes a while with the foam, and I think after time it gets even slower to bounce back. Maybe the memory foam is better than it used to be 10 years ago. I know they advertise a lot that they have made improvements now so it doesn't feel so hot to sleep on.

We paid $4500 for ours but it is an adjustable split King (each side adjusts independently of the other side). Still, the most we paid for a bed before this one was a sleep number in 2015 for $1200. In my opinion, everything is way too expensive these days. Even leaving this world isn't cheap (check current funeral costs) :(. Don...

Wow, that's out of my price range! (Well, maybe $1200 is possible, still seems like a lot for a mattress.)

About your second point, well, the answer is obvious. No one should be allowed to die. Problem solved.

There's no reason to have to spend that kind of money. I bought a memory foam mattress as it was the only type of mattress that was recommended for my adjustable bed. There are levels of thickness and firmness you may buy these mattress in, also, I made sure to get one infused with cool gel. I spent less than $300 for my mattress from Amazon.

Here's a variety of what amazon offers there are many more on the site and elsewhere.

This is the brand of one I purchased and I love it not one moment of feeling over heated, only thing is I would get a thicker, (11 inch or more), and for my body, I might go with more give. I feel in love with it early on, but, because I have so many body aches, I would like more give where as some would prefer more firmness. My first days you couldn't pull me out of this bed. I still like it a lot. The one I got was the 9 inch which isn't on the site anymore.

To be clear, the amount we spent wasn't just for the mattress. It was for 2 adjustable bases and 2 extra long twin mattresses. Still, I admit it was too much money but, if it provides the wife with any relief from her pain, it was money well spent. Don...

Yes, now they top those awful things will gel. And they get compacted quickly I hear. Real dunlop or talaty foam latex rubber will be my next choice.

Sunny, as you can tell, opions will vary, some will have vulgar things to say about memory foam others love them. You are probably better off testing all types at a store first to see what feels best for your body. You won't really know for sure by reading comments off this site that's for sure. I can assure you for some latex, spring, mattresses are not for everyone any more than memory foam mattress are for others. It can be daunting to research it I know, but, I found what worked for me and I'm glad I went with the memory foam even it this category there have been so many changes to the types that unless you've done a lot of information gathering, your opinion isn't a well informed one sometimes based on bias.

You are right, adding in the cost of the base will up the cost for sure, but, I was responding to Sunny,s request about mattress pricing. I do agree, whatever you spent was well worth it for you if you are satisfied as you seem to be. :) That often tends to be the bottom line. It has been for me as well. I've had my mattress for over a year and not problems whatsoever. It is a dream.
