What were some of your favourite toys to play with as a kid?

Mine were:

Hot rods
Spirograph
Barrel of Monkeys
Cards ( got ‘em, need ‘em)
Colouring books ( not really a toy )
Stuffed animals
Barbie Dolls
Insect catcher
Kites
Marbles
Frisbees
Roller skates ( these were toys )
Snakes & Ladders

I never like dolls.
stuffed animals
battery operated barking dog that walked on a leash (I couldn't have pets)
coloring books
pick up sticks
kites
marbles
cap guns
bow and arrow
roller skates (with key :))
Slinky
tiny piano by numbers
kaleidoscope
harmonica
jack in the box (little scary)

I was also a tomboy; no dolls for me. I had a stable full of stick horses, cap guns and holsters, etc. My favorite was probably my bicycle, though I did love my roller skates (with key, SeaBreeze!)

Not to sound pathetic, but we didn't have many toys, so the ones I had were all my favorites. Trucks, a car, my bicycle, and a wagon. Those last two aren't really toys, they're there to fill out the list.

Stuffed animals
sketch paper and color pencils (mom would not buy us coloring books)
steam shovel
Matchbox cars
cap guns
tiny piano
Barbie Dolls

We got very few toys when we were kids... but we played with all our friends toys ..so all of the above really.

I did have my own Roller skates with a key someone gave me second hand , they were very heavy on my feet but I played on them often /
My brother had cap guns and marbles so we played with them, and kids brought 5 jacks to school so we'd play them...but by far the most often played game for us girls, was Ball games , and skipping rope. We would play ball against the walls with 2 bouncy rubber balls and recite so many rhymes over and over.

Another favourite was Chinese ropes where we had to tie hundreds of elastic bands together and jump in and out of the rope as it got progressively higher up the legs of the 2 people on the end.. and then there was Hopscotch too...( or peevers as we called it in Scotland)

WE girls would sit for hours swapping scraps from a scrap book at school ... angels, santa clauses, easter baskets... cherubs ( oh the times they were so simple)

.. apart from balls and ropes, I'd spend as much time as I could on my friend's bike..she had 2 so I was able to borrow one which was fun, and we'd ride for miles .

My brother had an Etch -a-sketch which we'd take turns playing...

Cootie, Monopoly, my Chemistry Set, Slot Cars, Plastic Dinosaurs (still have them) and the Molded, Prehistoric Landscape they came with, Cap Guns and Cap Rockets, Wooden Building Blocks, Lincoln Logs, my Mini Reel Tape Recorder. I built models of all of the great movie monsters. Wolfman and Mummy still sit on my shelf and in my window on Halloween. Other than that stuff, I played outside with my buddies, most of the time.

A rock. My parents bought it for me on Christmas. Had that rock for years. It was my best friend.

First, what qualifies as a "kid"? Are we talking from birth to 10 years old? 12? 16? My interest in toys dropped rapidly once I discovered girls and cars.

But before then ...

GI Joes
Slot Cars
Model railroads
Matchbox cars
Erector sets
Frisbees
The ubiquitous baseballs/footballs/basketballs (not sure if they qualify as "toys")
Any kind of toy gun
Chemistry sets
Limited-effect nuclear devices

Roller skates (with a key)
Tricycle (never owned a bike until I was an adult)
Dolls
Cut-outs
Coloring books and crayons
Balls
Jump rope
My little phonograph, called a Victrola, and records
Probably a few dozen more that I don't remember.

roller skates
hop scotch
jump rope
baton twirling
shirley temple doll
made doll houses out of a card board box and furniture from construction paper
color books and crayons
hide and seek

Dolls.
Dollhouse
Conversely, my cap pistol
Bicycle
Paper dolls
Dress-up clothes (my mother had a best friend who was almost a midget and had also married rich, and she would send me her fancy dresses and glittery shoes when she got tired of them....thus I had fantastic dressup clothes that actually fit me....until *I* got too big)
Board games
Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys (I wanted an Erector Set and a chemistry set, but was told "those are for boys")
Blocks

I was more into playing sports with friends or spending the summer days in the pool but there were some toys I liked

Hot Wheels
Lincoln Logs
Chemistry Set
APBA Baseball (very nerdy board game for nerdy baseball fans)
The TYCO electric Car Tracks
Tonka Trucks
Cap Gun
And as Jujube said...a big cardboard box. It always took me to the moon

I had a cap gun and a cowgirl outfit. I would stack the cushions from my Mom's sofa on top of the piano bench put a rope around to make reins and stirrups and ride off into the sunset. I had a Howdy Doody marionette and I loved my coloring books, and anything to do with arts and crafts. I had a Jon Gnagy learn to draw set that I loved and my Grandpa gave me a professional set of colored pencils that I cherished. My doll house, paper dolls and when I got a bit older I got a microscope which you actually could see things swimming in the ditch water I got from the back of our house.
