Internet Predators

After I posted my POV to the thread regarding the child molester being drafted by an MLB team, it made me think of another issue that is and has become a very hot topic and is an item that ALL parents and grandparents can assist in. I'm talking about internet predators and crimes.

Just in the past ten years (and more before that), I have been involved in several cases, both as a first contact and also an Investigator of internet crimes against children under 18 years of age. Although it is very hard to convince our children and grandchildren of the dangers that are out there due to the fact that mainly because they don't believe that it can or will happen to them. These predators continue to lurk through the internet and primarily the social media sites for young, unsuspecting kids that will buy into almost anything. Many of these relationships that are developed through the social media sites end up in very sad situations, including death.

As adult parents and grandparents, I believe that we need to continue to remind children and grandchildren of the dangers that are attached to meeting and making new friends that they have no knowledge of. In many of the cases that I have investigated, so many of these predators have taken on identities that make them appear to be trustworthy, important people or someone that a child may be envious of, like a professional entertainer, surfer, gamer, biker, etc., and yet, nothing could be further from the truth. By using fraudulent means of using Photo Shop and making fraudulent copies of degrees from major universities, they can make themselves appear to be someone that they are not.

Not long ago, I investigated a case that involved a young girl that had received her first cell phone when she turned 13 years old. This was something that her single Mom told me that she had resisted in doing for as long as she could, but when "all of the other kids have one" it's hard to keep telling your child "No." Not long after she got her phone, she, of course, signed up for the most popular social media account. (You know which one I am talking about, I just cannot print it.) It was only a few weeks later that she received a friend request from a young boy that claimed to be a guitar player for an up and coming band. They had spoken back and forth through the social media site for a few weeks when he had also told her that he had an aunt, uncle and two cousins that lived near her and also all the while that he was talking to her, he would tell tell her how pretty she was and how he liked her earrings, makeup, hair etc. Pretty soon afterwards, he began to ask her to start sending him more provocative pics and at first she resisted, but then when he assured her that because they was so much distance between them, that there would be no harm for her to do that, she conceded.

And, finally, after a few weeks of coaxing, she sent him a picture of her unclothed from the waist up. About a week later, he told her that he was going to visit his relatives near her home and that he would try to borrow his uncle's truck and drive over to her town, so they could meet. She agreed and within about two weeks later, the rendezvous was prearranged. She told her parents that she was going to her girlfriend's house to study, but never came home. It was maybe 2-3 months later that two hunters found what was left of her body in a pile of brush and called the police. This is not an exclusive story. It has been repeated several times and seems to be a molester's favorite MO to get the child alone.

After several weeks of obtaining search warrants and checking phone records and text messages, we were able to locate this "boy," which turned out to be a 33 year old family man with one child of his own. After doing a forensic sweep of his pickup truck, we found the girl's DNA from hair, broken off nails and blood samples that were left behind. He took a plea deal to avoid the death penalty, which netted him life in prison without the possibility of parole. This sentence did not bring closure to the family, but having their daughter's remains returned so that they may give her a proper burial seemed to mean so much more than even knowing that he will spend the rest of his life in prison.

So, my advice to all parents and grandparents is that even though your children and/or grandchildren may think that you are being a nag about this subject, keep pontificating the message anyway. If awareness saves only one child, it has been worth it.

911, what a tragic story. :(

When my niece was 15 she posted a profile pic of herself wearing a tube top. Cute, but...….
I alerted her mother, and we both made her listen to speeches about why she had to remove it.

I also have heard that some men like to watch little girl pageants like "Toddlers & Tiaras" and gratify themselves. Disgusting. I resent having to breathe the same air as such animals.

Our daughters and granddaughters avoided any interaction with the "perverts", but we have 3 little great granddaughters who may be exposed to some of the Trash on Social Media...their parents are already working on training the little ones to be Very Careful of who they associate with. Today's parents have to be on guard 24/7 to keep their kids safe...the world is getting crazier every year.

IMO, when they catch one of these perverts, and find him guilty, the First thing they should do is "Neuter" the XXXXtard.

IMO, "Toddlers & Tiaras" always was and is, thinly veiled pornographic programming for pedophiles. These babies are weirded out with make up, wigs and disgusting sexual expressions, clownish really. Moms and dads in it for the money, sponsors and producers too. These tykes only learn vanity.

The winners are sexual perverts who watch this stupid show. It is disgusting.

More to 911's warning, I wish I could be part of an Internet sting just for these young teens who are preyed on, both girls and boys are victims. I'd have to learn the jargon however and have some kind of fake photo. I could get into helping with something like this I believe. I thought of doing this years ago, but now I'm retired with time to volunteer.

How does one get started I wonder?

It’s almost unbelievable the amount of resources that the FBI has and does contribute to seeking out internet pedofiles. They have a cyberspace child protection unit that continues to randomly check the different social media sites, along with the T&T sites. It’s a 24/7, 52 week a year job. And, it doesn’t just stop at the U.S. borders. It has become a world wide problem. Children that can be snatched off the street and sold into child sex slavery bring in a lot of money.

My talk with all of my grandchildren is always about not trusting people that they do not know and not believing people (other kids) who say who or what they are or where they live. It can be as close as your next door neighbor. One girl fell for a boy who claimed to be “Justin.” His line started out with, “Hi, I’m Justin. I just saw your picture and think you are really cute. I’m a surfer living in California and would like to be you friend.”

”Justin found out that her parents were divorced, so he played on that by telling her that his parents were divorced. Long story short..one thing led to another and two and a half months later she was found in an abandoned hunting cabin naked, sexually abused and dead. After an investigation, we learned that Justin was a junior at her school and lived just three blocks from her house.

I believe that many people would not believe how these people can trick children into coming under their control. We had one little girl that was being abused by a teenage boy a few towns away from where she lived and controlled her by just convincing her that he would kill her parents and sister if she told anyone. This went on for almost three years. Again, this relationship all began on a social media site.

Then, there was the case that a single woman with a daughter took in a man to live with her as her boyfriend. His only and real plan to be in this lady’s life was so he could get to the daughter. The daughter told her mom, but she wouldn’t believe her, so she told a teacher. The boyfriend turned out to be a sexual predator that had been out on parole for just a few months before being arrested.

We have been told over and over by many different psychologists that the rate of recitivism is a whopping 98%. There is no known cure for pedofilia. In the early years when this all started and before it became well known, going back to the 50’s, 60’s and into the 70’s, judges were somewhat reluctant to give these creeps long prison sentences. In the 90’s until now, pedofilia has become well known for what it is. Judges today are more apt to hand out very long sentences and in some cases with repeat offenders, judges have been known to hand down life sentences with no parole.

Remember the little girl in Colorado ? Found Christmas day I believe?...dead in her basement. That's exactly what her 'parents' were doing "to" her....IMO simply pimping her out to the seedy side of our society.

Again opinion but....her mother, ex-beauty queen , just couldn't let go of the attention....so she lived vicariously through that child. Almost as sick as those that watch such crap !

JonBen'et Ramsey.....5yrs old.........may she rest in peace.

I agree with you about the so-called "beauty pageants." Disgusting!

Toddlers & Tiaras is one spooky perverted tv show.
These moms need to get a life and stop living vicariously through their children.
It IS a way of pimping your kids out and should be against the law in my opinion.

That Jon Bonet Ramsey case was ‘off the charts’ disgusting.
Poor child. There was REALLY something wrong with those parents and IMO they got away with murder.
That case has and will always haunt me.

From what I understand there was unidentified DNA which excluded JonBenet’s parents from her murder, and a shoddy initial police response which compromised valuable evidence. I do believe childhood beauty pageants are paedophile heaven, and it is also unhealthy to sexualise children. Women have a problem with sexualisation as it is. I disagree with adult beauty pageants, but that is for another thread.

I'm going to go against professional courtesy of not throwing another police department under the bus just this one time. We studied and watched this case for months. Quite honestly, for most of us, we believe that the Boulder P.D. screwed this think up from the start. They allowed the crime scene to be compromised by allowing the body to be moved, the neighbors and friends to be allowed to be inside the home walking around and touching miscellaneous items. The BPD had very little experience investigating murder cases and probably should have handed it off to either one of the larger police departments in Colorado that had more experience or the FBI. They knew right from the start that this was going to be a high profile case, so why wouldn't you want to get it right by sealing off the crime scene and not allowing anyone, including the parents, to be inside the home until the CSI team had swept and collected any forensic evidence? Also, as we watched all of the interviews, Patsy and John were never separated in the first few interviews to take their statements. Rule number one in investigation when two or more "possible suspects" are involved is to separate them and take their independent statements. That alone may have made a huge difference. I could only shake my head in disbelief.

I want to add one last thing about the JonBenet case. IMO, it is absolutely insane when any small child that is full of innocence is murdered. What possible motive would any predator or deviate or anyone for that matter have for killing a child? In this case, the murder was caused probably to avoid identification, which leads me to another issue. How does a grown man become sexually aroused by looking at a 6 year old little girl? I have wondered this for my entire career and still cannot come up with any answers.

I look at the fact that any man that needs or wants to have sex can get their needs fulfilled very cheaply off of the street. Sex is not expensive. Having sex with a little girl or boy is, IMO, is an insane act. I have spoken with quite a few psychologists that have worked in prisons and have had sexual predators as their clients and every one has told me that it is their opinion that pedophilia is not curable. Maybe we should lock these pedophiles up for life after the first offense. Why give them a second bite at the apple? Even the children that are molested and live to tell about it suffer with psychosis for years afterwards.

Too many people want to give everyone that has committed a crime a second chance. I think there should be exceptions in these types of cases.

I agree. Recidivism among paedophiles is close to 100 percent. IMHO they should be incarcerated for life.

I agree when it comes to true pedophiles. The public uses that term to include far more than the legal and psychiatric definition, i.e., someone sexually interested in pre-pubescent children. A 19 year old boy who's sleeping with his willing 16 year old girlfriend is not a pedophile. Immature perhaps, and one whose judgment may be suspect, but a pedophile? Not proven by this act.

As for the children's beauty pageants, I find the sexualizing and objectification of children detestable. Parents who display and encourage their children in this manner literally make me queasy. The oft-given lame excuse, "But my daughter really enjoys it!" holds no water. Your daughter also undoubtedly "really enjoys" soda and cookies for breakfast, crossing the street without checking for traffic, watching TV rather than doing her math homework, and would greatly enjoy beating her annoying baby brother over the head with a baseball bat.

It's a deplorable reality of living in a sin-stricken world. Thank you for the reminder, 911, to do everything we can to educate our children. I understand it's necessary but...I feel sick now. It's hard to face the fact that it's real.
