Opening a new loaf of white bread for the sloppy joe dinner, does anybody ever eat the beginning and end slice of the loaf?

If I'm desperate enough and there's a foot of snow on the ground and it's midnight, yes. ;)

I'd always heard that the ends of the loaf were supposed to be the "sacrificial" slices, the ones that absorbed the moisture. Not sure if that's true but it's what I've heard ...

I leave the top crust in the bag, and it helps to keep the other slices fresher. When I get to the other end of the loaf, then I use them for toast, so they actually get a double use.
When it is homemade bread, then the crusts usually get eaten the first thing, and the rest of the loaf just has to fend for itself. It usually is eaten long before it has a chance to lose its freshness, in any case.
I also use it if I am making stuffing, french toast, or put it in the pan drippings and shred it for treats for the dogs, which they totally love. And if I don't do any of the above, then I shred it up and put it outside for the birds and squirrels; so, no matter what, nothing ever gets wasted.

If it is good bread to start with I love that part! Whole foods here makes great bread of all kinds. Everything from a delicate French loaf that looks like the one in the picture to one with molasses & so many seeds etc it is almost crunchy.

I used to have my mother cut off the crusts of all my sandwiches, the only way I would eat them. I wasn't spoiled, as they really didn't cater to me, and we didn't have much money...but I was a very picky eater. Would only eat spaghetti with butter, would not even taste tomato sauce or tomatoes, for example. We've made plenty of turkeys where the white meat is very tender and juicy, it doesn't have to be dry unless it's overcooked.

We have been cooking our turkeys on the Weber BBQ for 40 years exclusively. We don`t have dry breast meat-ever.

As far as the heels of the bread,I too use them to keep the rest of the loaf fresher-whether or not we use them depends on how much other bread we have when we come to the end of a loaf....sometimes we eat it,sometimes we pitch it....

My husband has no aversion to them but I do. Not surprising as I often cut off the crusts on the regular slices. But I do feel guilty about throwing away any food and I tend to utilize them in meatloafs, meatballs (did last night as a matter of fact), etc.

Seems like there's some kind of natural progression going on in your backyard.

Turtle eats fish, duck eats turtle, gator eats duck. ;)

I know, Phil. We have our own little zoo out back. One year we had an otter and it was funnier than heck to watch its antics. There seems to be a lot of Talapia fish in the canal, pretty good size too. How the heck anything can live in that dirty, drainage water is beyond me.

I need to research (I know that sounds so brainey but what I really mean is "google" LOL) the difference in the dough ingredients in the 15 grain Safeway Bread, and the 5 Seed Safeway Bread because the 15 grain sounds so much more nutritious, but the 5 Seed "tastes" amazingly better:confused: I'll try to post my findings (I know everyone will be waiting with anticipation, lol)
