7-Eleven is launching first fully-automated stores 7-Eleven Express in South Korea

Currently under trial, four vending machine-style convenience stores are being operated: two at the headquarters of 7-Eleven in downtown Seoul, one at Lotte E&M in Incheon, and one at the headquarters of Lotte Rent-a-Car in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province.

The store is designed as a 10-metre long express train, and consists of five vending machines with 200 products, which are divided into five categories for which there is high consumer demand: drinks, snacks, prepared meals, processed food and non-food products.

Consumers can make a purchase by inputting the product number into the machine or selecting items from the central kiosk, and pay via a prepaid transit card or credit card, not cash.

The stores feature a microwave oven and a hot water dispenser in the central area.

7-Eleven is taking steps to commercialise the vending machine-style convenience stores, and will accept franchise applications from its current franchisees, as a "second store."

"This model is designed to maximise the profit of our current franchise owners," 7-Eleven explained.

Self-service convenience stores are being tested in several markets around the world. "

My big concern with these fully automated stores is vandalism and crimes against the shoppers that frequent them.

The whole idea gets creepier and creepier to me after the sun goes down.

I might feel safer in a fully automated donut shop.

LOL!!.....whoa that one second from the left might want to consider a salad?

I don't even use self check out in stores. An automated store? No way. I think the concept was called a vending machine decades ago. The ones that spit out the bad coffee and stale sandwiches.

That being said in many markets, zipcodes, towns 7-11 seems like the don't want to or actually compete. They flourish in several tourist markets including Florida. But others they just seem to abandon.

A friend of mine , back in the day, had a nice little sideline business repairing & refinishing vending machines. He said cigarette machines, kept him supplied because of all the packs that got stuck. He also said he made the most money on cigarette machines, because when they did jamb , people would kick the crap out of them. No more money & outta smokes t'boot.......LOL!

Saw my first kiosk at a different McDonald's than my local one,I was paying cash so I went to the counter, the woman asked if I wanted it brought to the table and since I had my grandson,I said yes...
What I thought was odd was she brought the food and my little guys chocolate milk but not my soda, not sure if it was a mistake or you serve beverages yourself.

It seems the stores are embracing the automated check out because people hate standing in line.

If you only have a few items and the bar code is there it's a simple matter.

And if you miss an items like a quart of milk, you can go back and get it without having to get in line again.

I love the automated check outs.

Mc Donalds now has the automated kiosk where you pick out what you want, review your order and asks for the table you want it delivered to.

It's great. I'm hard of hearing and it's a blessing not having to ask the clerk two or three times what she is saying.

I know remodeled McDonalds in our area now bring the food to your table and yes the customer gets the drink themselves unless takeout. I think Wendys is one of the few fast food places to fill the drink for you(a waste too because when you ask for a refill you automatically get a new cup and ice)

They also have those self order kiosks. Unless I get a discount I refuse to use any self checkout.

C'est Moi, as soon as I saw this topic I also thought of the Automats I remember from my childhood. Their lemon merengue pie was fantastic! I didn't care if it came out of a compartment on the wall.
