Accident-prone people

Is this a real phenomenon? There's a woman in the church I attend that is always showing up with some body part in a sling, brace, cast, or bandaged. The latest prayer list said she had cut of the end of a finger chopping vegetables. Last year she claimed to have tripped over her toes and had a boot on her foot for months, then she was on crutches for a while. Just a few months ago her arm was in a sling for weeks because she said she hit her elbow on something and chipped the olecranon. She's constantly limping and she's not that old - probably early to mid-50s and seems to take an extraordinarily long time to get over her injuries. I really have considered that she is faking or deliberately hurting herself to get attention. But then, maybe not, but she'd have to be unbelievably clumsy.

I think there are accident prone and clumsy people. I have a girlfriend who I've know for years and she is clumsy with a capitol C. When she visits you just know something is going to get spilled or broken. I think in her case it's because she fidgets. She can not sit still or keep her hands off things. I hate for her not to come so I don't use some of my better things at the table and put away any items that mean something to me in the vicinity of where she will be sitting. I don't even have to do that with my young Grandsons.

Reminds me of Elizabeth.

There are folks who purposely injure themselves to get attention and take on the challenge of living with various handicaps. I went to college with this fellow who was always in a cast or on crutches for the entire year I observed him. It was always a different limb, every month, or so. His deal was that his sister attended the same university and was kept a slave to him that whole year. Poor girl.

Some years ago when I was still working, I had purchased a set of 10 pound iron hand weights. When I got into the front door with them (having taken off my shoes) one of them slipped out of the plastic bag they were in and landed on my big toe. Suffice it to say that it hurt quite a bit, and the next morning the whole front of that foot was purple. X-ray showed that the toe had hairline fractures and had been bleeding which was why the purple. Nothing else to do but wear moccasin type shoes for about six weeks. Being stubborn I first tried to wear my heels to work which didn't work very well. :p

I think some people have a balance problem and don't know it and that's why they are always getting hurt.

But for me? I can't seem to do a job or repair something without needing to get a bandage to patch a cut.

That's from rushing and not being careful.

I’m a bit accident prone myself. It could be from not being careful enough but definitely not from lack or balance. I do yoga every morning and have great balance however I do tend to get far more cuts and bruises than the average person.
I have to admit though that I haven’t broken any bones in years now. ( touch wood )

This woman could be suffering from self-inflicted injury syndrome, or Munchausen syndrome, where people deliberately make themselves (or horrifyingly, their children!) sick in order to get attention.

Saw these shows on tv a few times....its sickening and these woman now spend time in jail for their shennanigans....hope they're getting therapy while being isolated from their children :(

I thought of Munchausens also.
But,a family where I used to go to church had a 39 year old that was always rough housing with her much younger nieces and nephews and in the course of 1 year she fractured an ankle,a knee (that later required surgery),a sprained wrist and a broken nose (no idea),I used to tell her to start stocking up on arthritis meds now.:)

How is this affecting.you, and what solutions/help have you offered?

My youngest is a bit clumsy and a bit accident prone.
It started very young. Her first trip to the ER she was 3 or 4 - broken finger.
Then dislocated knee cap, broken toe, broken arm...
The worse one was a severe back injury in her late 20's that required 2 surgeries and a long recovery.
Yes, the ER staff questioned us about possible abuse - as they should. It only got awkward when she told them my hammer broke her toe. It was on my work bench with the handle hanging over the edge. She touched the handle innocently and the hammer flipped down onto her toe - I was 3 feet away but it happened so fast that nothing could be done.
