Cape Cod of all places! This isn't "supposed" to happen up here.

WELLFLEET, Mass. (AP) — A man boogie boarding off a Cape Cod beach was attacked by a shark on Saturday and died later at a hospital, becoming the state's first shark attack fatality in more than 80 years.

Wellfleet Police Lt. Michael Hurley said the man, who was in his mid-20s, succumbed to his injuries following the attack in the waters off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet at around noon.
The man was pronounced dead at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. The beach has been closed to swimming.

The state's last shark attack fatality was on July 25, 1936, when 16-year-old Joseph Troy Jr. was bitten in waters off Mattapoisett.

Didn't anyone see Jaws? We've had a lot of sharks up here lately due to the very warm summer. There was an attack a couple of weeks ago. It happens every year.

Is that right, Chic? I live in CT,and this is the first I've heard, but then I don't get out much. Ah, so it's the warming trend.

Well, here again, if you're going to enter their ocean....you're rolling the dice.

Just like the folks that walk into Grizzly Bear or Cougar country. Then get attacked. What did they expect? Ya go there, you're on the menu.

While swimming in Zanzabar, I got a taste of jellyfish on my leg. Don't go in the ocean anymore. Not even when we were in Puerto Vallarta last spring.

Along with the warming water there's been a growing seal population on the Cape, which also attracts sharks who feed on these flocks. Inshore commercial fishermen dislike the influx of seals as the seals feed on many of the fish species that are their "catch".

Nature's food chain in action!

It really is.

So sad! I saw on the news that the young man's aunt told him not to go to the Cape that day. Animals are showing up where people least expect it these days.

I only swim in water that is filled with little yellow r0ubber duckies.

Remember what RGP (above) said. YOU are swimming in THEIR water ! Ya take yer chances with

the rest of the swimmers. Rest up on the sand, eat a nice dinner and live another day.

One of the news stations said there is an influx of seals along the NE seaboard this year. Since seals are a primary food source for sharks, That, in itself, should be a good warning to anyone venturing into the water.
