Entering another's house...

:confused:On entering someone's house what's the first thing you notice or look for?

The smell.

Appetising (or not!) cooking smells, perfume, air freshener (why?), dogs, small boy(s) (they have a particular smell that little girls don't).

A place to sit so I can remove my shoes. My daughter expects everyone to remove their shoes but there isn't a place to sit. I have enough trouble with my knees without trying to balance on one leg.

It depends on the house. Sometimes the smell or fragrance of it assaults me as soon as the door's opened whether I'm paying attention or not! A cooking, sweet or other pleasant smell is wonderful, the odor of unchanged kitty litter or mustiness not so much. :( After that, I look to see if there are shoes by the door, and take mine off or not accordingly. Beyond that, I'm just interested in the way the house looks, the decorating, colors etc. I love seeing how other people do their houses! Even though I'm obsessively neat and clean, I don't notice those things in other people's houses unless it's over the top awful!!!

A good friend of mine, who keeps a gorgeous house (it's actually been featured in several different house/architectural magazines) is obsessive about her floors being messed up, so not only do you take your shoes off as soon as you enter the house, but there's a pretty large array of different slippers and house shoes in every size waiting for you to slip them on your feet as soon as you enter, complete with those disposable booty socks for people with bare feet rather than socks. I think that's a bit much, but hey! It's her house!

Neatness and cats and/or cat smell. My wife simply can't be around cats or should could have an allergy attack. But, just how nice the home looks tell us a lot about the people living in it. Dirty dishes laying around, carpet that looks like it hasn't been vacuumed in months, etc. It might be weird, but there are folks that don't like any pictures on their walls.

Most everyone we know in our complex knows we are packing to move, so our apartment isn't as "together" as it should be.

As far as taking the shoes off, never/ever even think about that. Sort of funny, but if a person goes to a Boat Show, the seller's/Companies of these new cabin cruisers and bigger, will have a sign posted...……"Please remove your shoes". Once on the boat, a person can completely understand why.

I notice the people, first and foremost. They are much more important to me than furniture, smells, shoes, etc.

I'm with you Sunny... however, I can't help noticing smells, whether they're sweet or not so much, they get you whether you're trying to notice or not!!

I also have to watch for any signs of cats because I'm allergic!!

The first thing I notice is the person greeting me, then I watch for an aggressive dog, but luckily they are usually very friendly.....a good sign of a pleasant visit.

I have never been anywhere I had to remove my shoes unless there was bad weather.
Everyone who visits my home removes their shoes, most people including workmen..without being asked. I have very light coloured carpets, so it would cause a horrible mess if people didn't. However In my entrance hallway it's tiled so if someone is just stepping inside the front door for a few minutes then there's no need to remove their shoes

If it is a neighbor's place with the same floor plan as ours, how differently they have furnished/decorated it. This makes condo living interesting.

I don't see the shoe thing here, perhaps that is regional, or age related. Our daughter does that, but she lives in the furthest corner of the country.
