after complaints about body odor

(WDIV) - A Michigan couple who were forced off a flight when they were told other passengers complained about their body odor say American Airlines has some explaining to do.

Yossi and Jennie Adler and their 19-month-old daughter were already having a tough time getting back to their eight other children after a vacation in Miami. Their Tuesday night flight at Miami International Airport was canceled because of the ice at Detroit Metro Airport.

Then on Wednesday night, they were removed from a plane after complaints about their body odor.
"My wife is embarrassed in front of hundreds of people because someone says we have body odor," Yossi Adler said. "It's embarrassing. I just want someone to tell me the truth. What happened?"

The couple said they boarded the plane last, sat down in their seats and were almost immediately escorted off.
"A minute after we sit down, a member of the ground crew tells us we have to deplane and talk to us," Yossi Adler said. "I'm terrified, thinking it's something with my eight kids at home."
Adler was then told other people had complained about his family's body odor, and that his family would have to leave.

They think it was less about their hygiene and more about them being Jewish.

Are airlines going too far?

Oh for goodness sake, why would it be cuz they're Jewish?..people will always try and claim racism when they're accused of something they've done, it makes me sick!!...they probably do just stink..and if they reeked to high heaven then as soon as they got on the plane, then Cabin crew would know it would be impossible to fly for hours with them stinking...

Yep. They've got to have some basis to SUE the airlines.

Nothing is more disgusting than sickening body odor. The other passengers have rights, too.

I saw that story yesterday. I doubt they were taken off the flight because they were Jewish....many Jewish people fly.

If they were that smelly why didn’t anyone notice before boarding? I did read that they didn’t get their luggage which isn’t a huge deal but that the child’s car seat also went on without them...the airline should have supplied one...that could be dangerous and also against the law...no?

For whatever reason, body odor is often hard for other people to deal with. I remember in the 90s where I was working a man in another dept had terrible body odor. From what I heard neither his supervisor or HR would talk to him about it. Ridiculous because they had a corporate nurse and she could have spoken to him, but the company did nothing. I walked near his desk once and I wanted to gag. :yuk:

I remember having to sit next to a real "stinker", about 5 years ago, on a return flight from Las Vegas to Kansas City. He was half drunk, and smelled of booze, and extreme Body odor. Luckily, it was a non-stop flight of only 2 hours, but I, and those around us, were sure glad to get off that airline. The wife and I spent a good portion of that 2 hours holding a Kleenex over our noses, and keeping the overhead vent running wide open. I have NO sympathy for those who cannot practice good hygiene when out in the public.

Its terrible to get stuck on a plane near someone with horrible body odor. If it were a stinky diaper they would have told them to change the kids diaper. Body odor can be as nasty or worse than a diaper.

Perfume wasn't the case with these people but loading on the male or female cologne can really cause a lot of problems for some people too. Migraines, watering eyes, running nose, etc. If you smell so bad you have to dump a half bottle of cologne on before you go out in public for goodness sakes TAKE A SHOWER and use some deodorant.

It seems like the world is changing when it comes to issues like this.

When I was young most people would grin and bear it or quietly ask to be moved.

These days may be due to the anonymity of the internet people have become emboldened and are more assertive in voting people off the island.

I'm not sure if it is good or bad but it does seem to be a noticeable change in our society.

The Captain ordered it? They must have a different policy over at American than we do at United. The Captain would not agree to put someone off of a flight due to BO. That would come from the Dispatcher who would have contacted his boss. Being Jewish has nothing to do with it. There is probably a Jewish person on most every flight. Just because they (the passengers) had a Kippa on does not mean they get lifted off the plane. If that were the case, I would have deplaned a lot of TV and movie stars off of my flights.

This summer, my husband sat next to a man with horrible body odor. I was in the seat across the aisle, and I could certainly smell it. It was awful. Extremely offensive. Hubs was not happy. I wish Mr. BO had been kicked off the plane.

This is not a new incident. I have heard others being removed due to BO. Probably what happened in this situation was that the Purser contacted the Captain and he in turn contacted the Dispatcher, who then contacted his Supervisor. The Supervisor made the decision to let the Captain use his discretion. I am sure that American will look into this and we may get a follow-up report.

This could have been prevented if only people would be more considerate. In some instances, people become use to a certain odor and then they do not even notice it. My neighbor was a spray painter for a large military contractor. His job was to spray paint tanks. If I would speak with him soon after he returned home from work, he would smell like he was dipped in the paint. However, he would tell me that he couldn’t smell anything differently.

Yes, there's a word for it: Noseblind
Used in a current commercial, I think it's for detergent or maybe Febreeze.

I don’t think I’ve ever smelled someone with very bad body odor but I did know a guy who’s feet or shoes smelled so bad that you couldn’t be in the same room with them.

The person bathed regularly so I don’t know why his feet smelled so bad.

As for not smelling certain odors, that’s true. When I smoked I couldn’t smell cigarette smoke on myself or others.

After quitting 11 years ago, I can tell right away who just had a cigarette.

Its a rare occurrence in CA. Seems like nobody smokes here but on Monday when I was at the drs office a man walked in and he reeked of cigarettes....he must have smoked half a pack before he came into the office.

I cringe when I think I probably smelled like that...and around my grandsons. :(

Wow.

My first reaction was that these people were playing the racist card, and they really did stink to high heaven. But after reading the article in the link, and watching the video, I wonder if some prejudice against orthodox Judaism might have been at work here. I've never heard any suggestion in my life about orthodox Jews not showering; that is totally absurd. How could that airline employee dare to make a statement like that? And what about people holding their noses and fanning the air as the family got off the plane (if in fact that happened?) This sounds more like schoolyard taunting. Who were the people who did that? The airline employees? This took place in Michigan, not some godforsaken corner of the world where nobody had ever seen a Jewish person before.

So, this is another one of those Rorsharch cases, where people's reactions might depend on their own slant on things, sort of like that recent story in the news about the grinning white teenager and the native American drummer. Which version you believe partly depends on where you are coming from.

From what I've read and seen in the video, although this guy didn't come across as particularly likable, and was obviously very angry, if they were being treated in the way he describes, they have a
right to be angry, and to bring charges against the airline. What gives the airline the right to humiliate people like that? I wonder if he can produce any witnesses.

Throwing his eight other kids into the equation is irrelevant. Anybody getting on a plane wants, or needs, to get somewhere.

I can think of one time when I was on a plane and I was the one who people were probably looking around for and wondering who smelled like that.

Flying out of Las Vegas early in the morning and the plane broke down. The earliest next flight we could get on was an evening flight. We couldn't get our bags back, though. No problem, we decided to rent a car for the day and do some sightseeing out in the desert.

Running late and getting ready to turn the car back in, we stopped at a gas station and I put the nozzle in and set it to "automatic" while I stood by the car. Apparently the "automatic" wasn't functioning correctly and when the tank was full, the gas didn't shut off. It shot out of the fill hole and splashed me from the waist down. Gas all over my shorts, leg, socks, tennis shoes.

So here I am, drenched in gas and no spare clothes. We turn in the car and go into the airport. I am REEKING of gasoline. I manage to buy a pair of athletic shorts at an outrageous price at an airport shop and a pair of rubber flipflops. The store clerk gave me a sturdy sealing plastic bag for my shoes and shorts, as I didn't want to throw them away. I go into a restroom, strip down and try to wash my leg and foot as much as possible, but I still reek.

If this had been after 9-11, I know they would have never allowed me on the plane since I smelled like a human bomb. As it was, I walk down the aisle apologizing to everyone who looked at me. I was so embarrassed.

Anyway, that's MY stinky passenger story.
