Self checkout-love or hate?

If I wanted to work for Walmart,I'd apply.
Hate them!
They haven't showed up at Aldi s yet...

When you think of it, you are doing the work for the store.

The self checkouts seem to come and go. I think it depends on the store and the type of customers.

But nothing, and when I say nothing is as boring as standing in line in a grocery store waiting your turn.

They have so many stations that are unstaffed at some stores. They have cut back on the hours at Metro, Was previously open 24 hours now it's 7 to midnight. They don't have self checkouts.

When I was in elementary school, I would sometimes accompany my grandfather to Childs' Grocery Store in Lansing, Michigan. Grandpa would step up to the counter and tell Mr. Childs what he wanted. Mr. Childs would fetch each item from behind the counter, package them if needed, and put them into a bags for Grandpa. Those were probably the last days before the advent of the "supermarket" which, as I think about it, was an early form of "warehouse store".

In some respects, "progress" = "pay more/get less".

Never used, never will unless they completely get rid of cashiers.

How much I like "selfies"depends on the level of technology at the check out. My store uses older machines from stores that were upgraded to better machines. So, there's a lot of glitches. Like having to rescan things multiple times. These machines were for one or two items, and get bogged down with 4+. Fruits and vegies are a nightmare.

And they used to deliver groceries, milk, and bread. Different times.

p.s. - I also pump my own gas. You?

If you lived in Oregon you wouldn't be pumping your own gas. As far as I know it's not much of an option in California where I live. I think if you are handicapped you can call a posted number and someone will come out and pump the gas for you. I don't see how they can do that when they have a grocery store to run though. Maybe if it's a grocery store that sells gas the laws are different on having to provide gas to those who can't pump it for themselves.

Oregon's laws changed for some rural areas on January 1. Several other states do not allow self serve gasoline. But for the rest of us, unless you are handicapped, it's pump your own. Can't remember the last time someone pumped gas for me. 30 years? More?

they still do and more and more stores are doing it. i get all of my groceries delivered by Safeway including Alcohol.
What I am talking about is a regular route and daily delivery. If you wanted milk you left the empty. And it was horse and buggy. Then vans. Then nothing. The advent of the automobile.

I remember when self serve gas came in. I thought it would be a disaster with fires.

Self serve also meant your oil level as not checked or your battery. Now it's all sensors.

Winter here is bad. Certain stations have service pumps. Just pull up and sit in the car.

Thanks for the info on Oregon Hoot N Annie. Finally I'll know something before my husband does. I feel like going and waking him up to tell him but I guess I'll wait till tomorrow. I didn't know there were any other states that don't allow self service. See, I learn something almost every day.

I just looked and it's the whole state of New Jersey and the city of Huntington NY.

I like the self-checkouts if I only have a small number of items; it's rather like playing "store," and can save me time when I don't have to wait for someone with a full cart to clear ahead of me at a cashier.

I don't like them because as others have mentioned they put clerks out of jobs
or reduce their hours. I usually shop on Sundays as the line ups are not so long
and I have gotten to know several of the checkout clerks and we have a chat
while putting the items through the cash.

ATM machines work 24 hours a day. They have added to the profits of the banks.

I don't think we will ever go back to the days when there were five or six tellers waiting to serve you at the bank.

Even our laundry machines don't take coins anymore. They have stopped theft and damage to machines dead in their tracks. You need a card now.

There was a couple in our apartment who complained and the management just told them you will have to take your laundry somewhere that has coin machines if you don't want to get a card.

All of us tenants love it. The machines used to be down frequently because of damage to the coin machines.

The world she is changing.

When a grocery store I used to go to got self checkout, I told the lady who did checkout that I didn't use the self checkout because it didn't smile and call me "honey" like she did.

I kinda think it's the camel's nose under the tent. They're training us to check ourselves out and pretty soon having a cashier won't be an option. I use them occasionally, but I don't really like them.

Now I’ve mastered how to use them I find self check out quite convenient, also, as I’m saving the wages of an assistant, I used to help myself to a carrier bag but can’t do that anymore as they’ve been replaced with proper shopping bags .......

Not a fan of self checkout ... have totally avoided using them to this point. I know the day is coming when that won't be possible. ... then I'll have everything delivered. :D

I only use that when I go to a certain store and rarely go there. I didn't have a hard time but the people waiting behind me may have..lol

I'm not a big fan of self checkout. It's because the machines have way too many bugs in them. They're great for one or two items, but for large family's weekly groceries-they suck.
