We had a bit of snow early New Year's day. May get more tonight/tomorrow. Par for the course at this time of year. We've been fortunate with the lack of snow this December.

Today was a wonderful sunny New Years Day with calm and maybe 65F high. The West has had quite mediocre low snow conditions so far this 23/24 winter but that is now changing. Copied the below 3 images off Windy as forecasted .

First image show wind velocities at 10k feet altitude at 4pm PST. The jetstream is the band from France to China to the Pacific south of The Gulf of Alaska where it dives towards California shown with the white streak of 80mph high winds.

Second image are temperatures at 10k feet per scale at lower edge right. Note winds are set up now to blow that coldest air over Siberia across the Bering Sea then dives southeast in the Gulf of Alaska towards California.

Third image shows clouds and rain currently over the Eastern Pacific with a lower left inset of the forecast at Wednesday midnight when the Sierra Nevada receives that first of 3 storm bands.

Top right snow forecast from Snow Forecast, Snow Reports & Snow Conditions . The 3 to 6 day forecast adds a similar amount, so 34 inches of fresh cold snow at my main Tahoe ski season pass resort.

As the cold dry arctic air directed by the jetstream flows southeastward diving downward over the relatively warmer Eastern Pacific, clouds form and condense creating cyclone CCW rotating storm front systems. Currently that jetstream is being deflected north along the coast but by Wednesday 6am will be right over the San Francisco Bay Area and at 10am over the Sierra Nevada mountains where there high altitude will push clouds higher into the atmosphere creating snow then dropping.

I've just been out tying everything down that I can.. and pulling the furniture away from anywhere that it might do damage if it gets blown away.. (heavy furniture)... took all the plants pots down from the trellises in case the weight of them pulls the trellis down... but this is like a twister.. the last time I felt a force as strong as this was in Spain when my roof got blown off... I've got to say I'm not optimistic here about my 200 feet of 6 foot fencing... I can hear police and fire engine sirens in the distance... very scary....

25F and foggy. Yesterday the comment with the temp was that BC had endured the warmest December ever.. We laughed about the word endured! Then today it is cold and everything is covered in frost.
