A second mass shooting in the space of 24 hours... this is just awful:(..R.I.P to all those innocents who lost their lives in senseless murder..

Nine people have been killed and at least 16 injured as police search for a second gunman after a shooting at a bar in Ohio.

Police responded to calls about an active shooter in the area of East 5th Street in the Oregon District on Dayton, according to WHIO-TV.

The the first shooter was killed by police, but authorities fear a second attacker who fled the scene in a Jeep could be on the lose.

Witnesses described 'casualties everywhere' and a 'white man dressed all in black' in the early hours of this morning.

The latest massacre came around 12 hours after America's tenth worst mass shooting which saw 20 people shot dead when a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, yesterday.

Wheres the safest place to live in America?

I'd say place's like ours, ;) a little more remote, and I'm sure there are lots of folks on this forum that also live a ways out from most large population areas that have become nothing more than large cesspools. America is a large country and there are many places peaceful and safe. You will never hear about them... because... well, that's not news. And without getting political, we don't fit the agenda. Unbelievable! Just last night, Janet and I were discussing how mass murders are becoming so commonplace, that we both have a hard time keeping them separated, in our minds.

Knowing what I was getting into, I went to Wikipedia's entry, and list, on the subject. Holy cow!

One thing is certain: These senseless murders are increasing in frequency. As our population is starting to reach a serious breaking point, with people still, amazingly, bragging about the number of offspring they've put out in this world, these murders will increase in number and frequency.

For your edification and enlightenment, please read up on the Rat Cage experiments of the late '50's, early 60's. We studied these experiments in my Psych 101 class, back in '71. They were so spot on, in what they showed and predicted.

The absolute, horrible truth is that all aberrant behaviors we now see, including strange takes on human sexuality, murders of family members, the formation of cults with bizarre takes on "the truth," and these truly terrible mass killings, all are a consequence of our species' failing, even with its intelligence, to self-limit its propensity to over breed, practically everywhere it gets established.

More terrible times are ahead, unfortunately. On that, you can bet!

An irony, here: I live in Austin, TX., scene of one of the first mass killings that entered into the public psyche, courtesy of the nightly news on TV: I regularly pass by the UT (Clock) Tower.

Unfortunately, I must, respectfully, disagree. We all have heard, over and over, again, on news reports, residents of small towns saying, when incidents like mass killings occur, "We never thought anything like this could happen, here. It's so nice, here!"

As long as our population grows, no place is immune from these killings. By the odds, smaller towns are less likely to experience them, but if you think they "can't happen here," there is always a chance that you will, one day, be in for a rude awakening.

Pay attention to our retired police officer's advice. To do otherwise is to possibly put yourself in peril.

Tree, Sorry... I never meant to give the impression that it can never happen in my town or any small town. There is no boundary line for a mentally disturbed person. All I'm saying is the odds increase dramatically in a larger population zone .(particularly a gun free zone). Also, for instance, the small town where I live has about half the people open carrying. I dare say, a shooter would not have the time to just start mass killing before someone (like myself) would put the mad dog down.

update...26 confirmed injured, and 9 dead...

The gunman in the Ohio shooting was wearing body armor when he opened fire on patrons at a bar, killing nine and injuring 26 early Sunday morning
Because officers were in the area when the shooting started, they killed the gunman in 'less than a minute,' authorities said.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said during a Sunday morning press conference that had police not responded so quickly, 'hundreds of people in the Oregon District could be dead today'.

Whaley said the gunman was carrying a .223-caliber rifle and had additional high-capacity magazines with him. The suspect opened fire on the Ned Peppers Bar from the street.

There are 195 nations, which did not have mass shootings this weekend. And those that have had mass shooting, like New Zealand, have gotten off their butts and did something about it. Strangely, their citizens aren't still being gunned down by the dozens . In the US, we get "our thoughts and prayers" from our politicians, but no one does a damn thing to solve the problem. No one has a Constitutional Right to be a target. And it's going to be the same Monday morning.

I agree with the others that we need to find the ROOT cause of these killing sprees. Are there any commonalities between all these shooters? What is going on with them?
My answer: Distorted Sense of Reality = Mind Altering Drugs that have been easy for our young boys to get their hands on for decades (and now are grown), like oxycodone...PLUS Violent Video Games (and street drugs laced with other devastating chemicals meant to encourage dependency and do harm...even handed out free to get them hooked then sending them into theft in order to pay their drug-pushers).

The mass shooters are mostly the same age group (not the vegas one...there's a Military PTSD with Guns and Combat Training reason for a few of the older men).

My son came home at age 14 with a borrowed video game called "Grand Theft Auto". I'd never seen a video game so I took the controls myself because I was always cautious as a parent and hands on. I was appalled. The video had me walking down a nice sidewalk in a city with nice animated people (but real looking) passing by and I was suppose to shoot them as they passed me in order to get points. Then a police officer came in the street and I was suppose to shoot him too...repeatedly...to boost my score. I did because I wanted to see what our many young boys were experiencing. As the animated (but real looking) Officer fell down flat on his face, I kept shooting as blood made a puddle on the street. I stopped as I'd seen more than enough. We must get these violent video games banned!!

I was literally sick to my stomach. I of course banned all video games in my house after that. But how do parents know what happens at their friend's houses.

There was a short period of time back then when mindful parents got together to protest these violent video games but were quickly silenced by the powerful media industry...$$$.

Video games are possibly a tiny factor in mass shootings. Weapons are crucial.
I can't let this go on anymore. I'm not doing anything about it. I'm just as bad as those politicians, who accept mass shootings as the price for political support.
What groups or organizations are REALLY trying to stop gun violence?

There's too much focus on gun control when we all know that a crazed and determined killer will get his hands on weapons no matter how much regulation there is. Gun control debate is just politics now anyway. If deranged killers have to, they'll just steal weapons.

They either don't think they'll get caught, or they want death-by-cop, and/or want the attention that the media brings because they don't care if its good or evil, just so they are remembered for being successful...even if its evil success. Most don't know the difference between good and evil anyway.

The recent teenage winner of $2 Million in the big Gamer competition for the video game called Fort Night(?) said in an interview that he plays 6 hours a day and loses his sense of reality. Helllooo.

And btw....
No groups are trying to ban the video games because the powerful gaming industry isn't letting that happen $$$

The killer Identified, as Connor Betts..and discover he'd also shot & killed his own siter & her boyfriend..as they're found dead in their car...

It's pretty cold-blooded to go out and commit mass murder. These guys have to be fantasizing about murder a good long time before they pick up a weapon and do the deed. There's more to it than just plain old hate and impulsive decision-making. They probably begin seeing it as their special talent in the end. Blah. What c-rap...

Yes, I agree. I never remember hearing about mass shootings until about the last 30-35 years ago or so. They are a pretty recent phenomenon. And they are mainly committed by young men. Sure, sure there are some that are by a different age group, but it's striking how often it is committed by a young man. We had better start committing time and resources into finding out what is happening with them.

I agree that these violent video games could be a part of it. It boggles my mind how parents allow their kids to be playing with these video games for hours every day. That is lazy parenting. Some other things that pop into my mind are anti-depressants, drugs both legal and not, our food supply, what are these kids eating now? Family units have changed. These kids are being raised totally differently than our generation. Our society has changed trememdously in the last few decades. Obviously not for the better in a lot of ways.
