A not so dangerous dog

That was a total tear-jerker ! What a poor terrified little sweetheart ! She must have been through some awful bad times, to be so scared, or had lived in a little rabbit cage somewhere as a breeder, and not had a lot of good attention.

I am glad that Edie came out of the trauma, and that there were people that cared for her, and especially thankful that she is now in a good, loving home, and probably growing out her long silky Maltese coat.
Maltese are such a shy but sweet and loving dog, at least the ones that I have been around were that way.
Thank you for sharing, Warri, and I reposted it to my Facebook page.

Frightened dogs can be the most dangerous, not the least.
She'd probably had a short term traumatic experience at a guess, those abused over a longer time seldom come round that quickly, it takes time to build trust again in most.

My little Belle loves people but at the new vet's she savaged him just for trying to clip her nails! The shrieks from her brought the assistant rushing in to see if we were skinning her alive. He was aghast and kept saying "but I didn't hurt her!" I told him he wasn't the first she's surprised, the other one knew to hold her down first.
She won't let anybody clip them, not even me, and has to be forcibly held down and it takes two to do it.
It's hardly abuse, but she is terrified of those clippers. She's never been injured by them, I've been with her every time she's had them done and it's the same story every time. She doesn't object to having her feet held or toes examined, it's just the clippers. No telling what her hang up is.

Perhaps that dog just had a 'thing' about leads? Who knows?

Sorry Poll, I'm a bit harder hearted than you and the warm and fuzzy stories get the same cynical once over as the harder ones from me.
There's always more (or less) to a story than meets the eye.

(Especially on those feel good sites. )

I wouldn't recommend Edie for a family with children. No abused dog can be trusted with children but even when terrified she was not going to tear anyone apart. I was amazed that she consented to the grooming process.

Speaking of dangerous dogs, as a 15 yo I had a Saturday job at the local Italian fruit shop. Out the back they had a kelpie bitch constantly tied up on a chain. She had pups and I was told not to go near her as she would go me. She was supposed to be a guard dog.

In those days I had never met a dog that I didn't want to befriend and in about 10 minutes I was petting her, then had her consent to handle the pups. The Italians were amazed. I felt very pleased with myself. I'm glad Edie found someone prepared to brave the terrified fury.

Warrieee, what dog's gonna bite Pollyanna?? :)
I can imagine you doing that, probably explaining your intentions to 'mum' and lining the pups up for a lesson.

I'd have probably risked it too, I'm not rendered ecstatic by babies but go to mush around puppies.

My daughter got her German Shepherd Nelson from the pound, he had been there for 3 months as the girls couldn't put him down, she went whenever she could and just sat there near him as he was terrified of people, after 2 weeks and the pound checking out their living arrangements they were allowed to buy him.
Every time someone came to visit he would hide behind my daughter and she would just move to the side each time until he finally stopped doing it they persevered with him as he was such a beautiful boy and had obviously been mistreated by a previous owner, they showered him with love and in return he loved them unconditionally, i used to be scared of him but i grew to know and trust him . Sadly he was put to sleep a couple of weeks ago, but we are so happy that we were able to give a dog a happy life full of love. They just need to learn to trust you, but there are some dogs that no matter what you do they can't be helped due to obscene mistreatment or maybe brain damage and they are best put down.

My dog Pudgie was my constant companion throughout my childhood, but everywhere we went people would start screaming and running away. I don't quite get it, because Pudge was a great little guy - always loving attention and sharing any treats I'd buy at the corner store ... he'd NEVER bite anyone!

I think maybe jealousy played a large part in Pudgie's demise - after avoiding traps, poisons and arrows ol' Pudge finally fell to a .30-06 bullet ...

D'aaaawwww, he looks such a real cutie Phil.

btw, how's the cat? Forgiven you yet?

Oh, he was! He was a hit at "Show & Tell" in Miss Minkin's 1st-grade class, and Donnie Hague's bite-wounds ended up healing quite well.

btw, how's the cat? Forgiven you yet?

Cats forgive but they never forget. I'm convinced that all cats have a secret little bunker, unseen by any human eye, wherein can be found white-boards and map tables covered in calculations of cat-revenge.

But as for Snags, yeah, he's back to flying around the house like a demented winged ape. He's already gained a pound, I think, based upon the injuries I received when he took a long, running, arcing leap onto my stomach as I was in the recliner watching Perry Mason ... I'm watching Perry reveal the true motives of the horrible criminal, he's just about to say the incriminating words, when out of the corner of my eye I see a blur of black and white speeding at me ...

Now, I've trained in martial arts pretty much my entire life and my reflexes are above-par, but NOTHING could have prepared me for that furry missile attack. He landed with all four paws on my stomach, dropping his weight as only a cat can, then rebounded off the fireplace and away into the bedroom. As I caught site of a huge, fuzzy tail whipping around the corner I could swear I heard chuckling ...

Sifu, I am so sad to hear about the loss of your dear beloved Pudgie. It is easy to see from the picture what a sweet puppy he must have been, and I know it must have been hard for you to open your heart to share this tragic tale with us. But, after all, that is what your friends are here for...

I may have some good news for you !
I think it is possible that poor Pudgie did dodge that bullet after all, but in his haste to flee, he became lost, and has not been able to find his way back home, and has been searching for you all these years since.
I believe it was your Pudgie who was sighted, trying to befriend a bicyclist about a month ago. The picture looks just like Pudgie ! If you can get there on your bicycle, he will undoubtedly be glad to see you, too, and follow you back home.

We rescued a Pomeranian that was brought to us at our house.. The previous owner told us if we didn't take her, he was going to put a 12 gauge to her head..
She was 4 months old and was severely neglected which is abuse..

Naturally we took the dog and she is the most adorable pet we have ever had..
We have her for almost one year now.. She weighs 1.9kg which is 4 pounds..
She NEVER barks or snaps..

I can't remember life without her......

That's good that you got lucky Steve, so did I. Mine had an X marked on her forehead too, just because she was too exhuberant and jumped on the toddlers and knocked them flat, not because she was badly behaved. She isn't. She was a JR puppy, what did they expect?

She was well treated, but she was just the wrong dog for that family and the man's patience was running thin from seeing his children covered in scratches and bruises. Fair enough I guess.
But not all 'rescues' are good stories unfortunately.

Touching video Warrigal, brought a tear to my eye. I watch Animal Cop shows on TV sometimes, and feel so sad for those poor neglected and abused animal. So nice to see when someone works with them, cleans them up and provides the needed medical care. The monsters that let them get into this state, should be banned from ever owning another animal again, or thrown in jail if they try.
