Americans are fat.

It was maybe 2 decades ago but I remember all the "propaganda" on the media about "Fat is Beautiful." Ya, sure! Fat is beautiful? Who were they trying to kid? Who are they trying to kid now? Fat on a whale is known as blubber. Is a man/woman carrying a load of blubber beautiful? Not in the neck of the woods where I was born!
It didn't last because there were always plenty of people like you to remind them that you thought they were ugly, just in case all the movies and TV shows hadn't got that message across to them. Heaven forbid they feel good about themselves for a few minutes.

I'll bet you make fun of cancer patients, too. Maybe you'd like to find some pictures of cancer patients who have lost their hair and tell us how terrible they look. Then you can wonder aloud how they could have allowed themselves to get cancer when there's so much information around about it.

I read this whole thread and this is what I got:

Stay away from fast food.
Read labels.
Eat less calories.
Make the calories you do eat come from healthy food.
Don't smoke despite it's weight loss effects.
Be active.
Teach children to go out and play but not get kidnapped.
Eat from the senior menu.

I think we should all strive to follow this going forward. What do you think?
There is a lot of truth there.

I would also add this: Limit the amount of highly processed food you eat. A lot.

I am convinced that highly processed foods are at the root of this problem for many of us who are otherwise healthy.

Read the book Metabolical by Dr. Lustig. Yes, it’s a lot to wade through, but his points are good ones, IMO.

It was a needless comment Della
Try and let it slide
If you lost 60 pounds once in your life, then you clearly have discipline and incentive to lose weight again.

Get your thyroid retested if possible and your dosage changed if needed and start a lifestyle change to lose 5 pounds and just 5 pounds.

The best weight loss successes usually involve exercise. Mornings is the best time to schedule exercise and preferably before you eat. Even a 20 minute walk every morning will help build muscle tone which will then speed up your metabolism.

Plan your meals ahead of time so you know exactly what you are eating.

Keep a log book of your accomplishments cause that’s what they are.

Diet info has actually changed over the years. For the longest time it was believed that if you just reduce your calories, that your weight will drop accordingly but this isn’t necessarily true.

It’s now been discovered that simple carbs cause increases in blood sugar making it much harder to lose weight. To combat this, it’s suggested to add a protein to every meal you have and keep simple carbs down to a minimum. Protein keeps your cravings down, creates a feeling of fullness and helps keep your blood sugar balanced. It also can help with moodiness.

The older you get, the harder it will be to lose weight. Why not join the few of us who also want to lose weight?

I know people’s comments can be harsh and unfair at times but I think what we tell ourselves is probably far worse. Like yourself, I have low thyroid that’s been left untreated but I am determined to change that in order to help my body metabolize the foods I eat.
Why not join me? It’s been proven that people generally do better with a support system.

Kate is in on losing weight as well as AlligatorRob. Together we can do this.
You’ve got drive and determination. I’ve seen it in uou plenty of times. I will help you if you want.

What do you think?

Less added sugar in your diet helps, or even none. There are enough natural sugars in foods without adding more. I also avoid deep fat fried anything. This is just me and I do it for a health reason but honestly I believe deep fat fried foods are not healthy for anyone. And, of course, exercise.

Agreed. Added fats, sugars and salt (foundations of most processed foods) may delight our taste buds but are terrible for our health.

Having good genes is indeed a bonus... however like talent...
if you don't work at it, it won't benefit you.

I disagree ... I know people personally that do have good genes, and never exercise , and eat what ever they choose. One guy 6'0, about 170 and lives on , steak, burgers, and Snickers bars. Never exercised a day in his life.

There's always an exception to the norm. Are you willing to bet your life on being the exception? Not me, I'm sticking with healthy living. Sure I could still drop dead at a youngish age, but it wont be for lack of trying not to.

When I'm on a healthy way of life hoping to lose weight I don't eat between meals. I eat lunch at noon and dinner before six and that's it. I don't eat many carbs and nothing that contains more than 3 grams sugar. The only fruits I eat are melons and apples because I have GERD.

Typical day would be lunch: a large salad with five vegetables topped with salmon and olive oil dressing.
Dinner; cod, steamed broccoli,brown rice.

As I've said, I've eaten that way in the past and lost about a pound a week for about a year, after which it starts coming back.

The last time I did this was this year for 46 days (Lent). I didn't lose an ounce.
For now I'm not trying. I eat whatever I want when I want it and my weight remains the same.
Life is short.
Hey Della,
Somehow I missed this post you made.
From your other posts I wrongly assumed that you wanted to lose weight, which was why I offered to support you if you wanted to try again. Clearly from reading this post I assumed wrong.

I would have sent you a private message but you have that turned off which was why I wrote my post to you here.

You haven’t posted since you last posted in this thread . I sincerely hope you weren’t offended by my offer to support you. If I had seen this post of yours, I wouldn’t have done that.

I apologize if my post made you uncomfortable. It seems to be something I’m quite good at. 🥺

Anyway, I hope you return either way.

..... and then suddenly he dropped dead ....

No, but Jim Fixx did .... @52 while jogging

And keep in mind that Jack LeLane [the guru of exercise] died @ 96.

While George Burns [who basically lived the nightclub lifestyle] lived to be 100.

Point being, compared to good genes ... strict diet & exercise pale by comparison.

In the 1990's Canada accepted a lot of refugees from Somalia. Just about ALL of them were stick thin. Now, their adult children are fat. Diet and lifestyle made that happen. Their Grand Children are even fatter. The north American life style did that. JimB.

I believe it. So many examples of this in western countries.

Dr. McDougall (Starch Solution) noted it during his MD practice in Hawaii.

His Japanese immigrant patients mostly remained thin and healthy as they continued eating their homeland diets lots of rice and vegetables, some fruit and very little meat/fish. Not a lot of sweets or processed foods.

Their offspring embraced American diets and suffered from high rates of obesity, type 2 diabetes, high BP, etc.

Are you 6'2"?
Is it fat or muscle? Muscle looks a lot better and is healthier. Even on females. I see no point in fat shaming people. It’s rude and it’s wrong. OTOH, so is normalizing what can be a very unhealthy condition. I admit I have no good solution for this quandary. But, I have my suspicions…….

I still think it’s our highly processed food. Back in the past a some friends of mine hosted a high school exchange student from France. In six months in the USA she gained almost 20 pounds. Two years later the friends visited France and paid a visit to the young lady and her family. She was back to normal weight. What they noticed is that most of the food the family ate was made from basic ingredients. The mother would not think of buying mayonnaise. She made it. The father, mother and all the kids know how to cook from scratch.

There’s something about our food that is not healthy.

Glad this has thread has turned to health. It was getting a little fat jokey.
Metabolic health is a major concern in the US and UK these days.
They're finding that obese people can be metabolically healthy while skinny people can have hidden visceral (killer) fat surrounding their organs.
Waist to hip ratio is important, maybe more than weight.
I was shocked to find I'm prediabetic. I'd considered myself pretty healthy. My weight is good but I've always had a belly.
Now that I do know I've changed my diet and am working on getting the numbers down.
It's not easy though.
Excellent points.

Not disputing the advantage of good genes.... got some meself!!
Just saying it's not foolproof.

As you say, nothing is foolproof. However, if there is a fountain of youth, IMO, it is made up of exercise, good diet, and being careful to avoid accidents. I retired hoping to relax and never work again. Then reality raised it’s head, and I had a new job - exercise on a regular basis, eat a more healthy diet which requires a lot of cooking, and stop doing things like jumping off bridge with just my foot tied to big rubber band. (I actually never did that, but I am a lot more careful about doing other stuff like climbing on the roof to sweep off a few leaves.)

No all are fat, I recently have lost 40 pounds from a 42 jeans to a 32 jeans just by cutting back on quantity consumed of food, also I have lost a lot of my appetite since my surgery 4-6 that really started all of the loss I admit, I love it!!
