The Willamette Valley, mostly, where my grandma was from. Dad was a ranger when I was little and we lived up the mountains with a fire engine in the yard. My aunt and uncle live in Portland now, but my uncle did live at Mt Hood. Most of the family I know are gone now, and not real sure where the cousins ended up.

Same here in NE Ohio - I can never tell one boom from the other, but it turns out my dog doesn't like them one bit! Speaking of groundhogs, there were two living next door. Now, I have 7 fast-growing monsters living under my shed. /-;
 
I believe it was John Adams who called for fireworks to celebrate our independence. The Founding Fathers weren't exactly a fun bunch, but once in a while they did cut loose.

I don't like neighborhood fireworks, and every dog I ever owned was terrified of them. But I do like the big fireworks displays. I wish they'd outlaw the neighborhood kind and keep the others.
 
Because of the fire danger and the supply chain issues most of the firework shows in the Phoenix area have been cancelled. That won't stop the neighbors from setting them off though. I will never understand why they legalized fireworks in a city that is in the middle of the desert a few years ago. Each year there are fires that are started in areas because of them.
 
My poor Gigi was a basket case last night with so many people celebrating early.I got meds from the vet for her the other day,but hadn`t given her any yet. As far as I know,the only exposure she`s ever had in her life to fireworks would have been her first year,and she was only 10 weeks old. She was rescued off the streets at a year old and lived on the rescue ranch high up on the mountain where there were no fireworks. Then she came to me and my town did not allow fireworks outside the city limits,which was where we lived. Last year she was back at the rescue ranch while we were here in Idaho looking for a house to purchase.So this is all new to her and she HATES them. Last night she was shaking and drooling and belly crawled across the yard to me.

I`m all for celebrating,and I think we can all take measures to keep our pets comfortable on the 4th-but can`t it just be that one night only??

small children that are frightened by all the loud noise. What about the chances of fire to home and property.

While the bombs bursting in air are beautiful that is not really what the 4th of july is about. It is to celebrate when we recieved our freedom to become our own country, to honor all of those that put their lives in danger to afford that right. We do not need fireworks, that is just a thing that reminds me that many brave men gave their lives to make out country. We should not celebrate in this way. It should be about a community coming together honoring those who worked and died to give us the right to be Americans

This just occurred to me: the multi-day fireworks are similar to what happened to all holidays/Holy days - ruined because 'they' start promoting and selling products 6-8 weeks in advance. Everywhere, someone is competing for our attention and our money. By the time the 'special day' arrives, we have been so inundated by all the hype, the thrill and excitement are gone. (Just my opinion)
 
Several hours of fireworks last night. They were not terribly loud to us, but as you know, dogs have far better hearing. My dog likes to climb onto the highest surface when he is scared. My daughter found that feeding him treats (3 calories each) during thunderstorms helped keep him calm.

So the treats came out, as he was in my room trying to get on top of the dressers and night stands. It only took a few treats, before he started whining like he was scared to get treats. How do I know he wasn't scared? This was during lulls in the fireworks and his tail was wagging instead of being tucked underneath him. I tried palming him off on my daughter, but he followed me back to my room. After about an hour and a half of this, my son took the dog, and I locked my bedroom door so no one could send him back to me.

When I went to bed, I unlocked the door. He came back in courtesy of someone with thumbs, and woke me up whining at 3 a.m. No fireworks, just wanted the treat flow to begin again. I pretended to be asleep.

When I got up, I wondered why the couch had been moved. Sure enough, my son had to move it away from higher furniture.

It is amazing how easily my dog can train me, though.
 
The fireworks are in full force here now. Sounded like someone was right in front of my window and shooting off a gun about an hour ago. I put music on for my pets and they seem okay. Been talking to them a lot and empathizing with them. I used to like fireworks many years ago--like the show down at the lake but this nonsense in my neighborhood is ridiculous. I think it's illegal here. I hope the police come and give them hefty fines!!
 
My fur baby is pacing the floor because she hears the fireworks going off. She can't seem to settle herself no matter how much I try to distract her. I feel so sad for her. I try to keep her close to me but she prefers pacing until it's all over.
 
Lots of illegal fireworks and firecrackers from the Far East are shipped into either San Francisco or Los Angeles. Thus cities across our whole SFBA tend to have excessive amounts of illegal bombs going off for weeks before usual holidays especially by youth gangs. Not much physical enforcement, probably because even if police arrest people that are of course quickly released, our judges don't use enough deterring pain to make a difference just like they don't with graffiti caught youth. Youth arrested or convicted that cannot be identified in media publicly a horrible law thanks to Western society psychology experts. If they do, usual advocates and lawyers for poor and youths start whining. In our quite active local Nextdoor community, there are numbers of people always complaining about loud bangs terrifying their dogs though that will never change things.

I don't like the nightly pre-holiday bangs but on the 4th its fun and amazing to watch. In about a half hour will drive 4 miles to a downtown large grassy park where fireworks are being shot off after dusk wanes at about 9:15pm PDT.

Hopefully people complaining will change things....never say never...dogs and other animals matter too!!
 
It could change given technology that can identify sources of loud sounds, however that will require a social change to how we view punishment, especially with youth and the poor. I personally am an advocate for punishment with physical unpleasantness. Not talking about torture but simply say incarcerating convicted persons where it is uncomfortably warm or chilly enough to deter repeat offenses. Much more in that vein.
 
This is a new one for me. Fireworks going off, big 90# dog (bear)barking nonstop. 2 little dogs doing nothing. I don't think they can hear over the big dog barking. I will take one out off three anyday LOL

John Adams was one of my favorite FF. I am familiar with what you are quoting from years of study of him. To the surprise of it he said it would be July 2nd, the date of adoption of the Lee resolution, not the 4th.

Fireworks here were restricted to the 3rd and 4th only. And only to a small area, which our house happens to be in. We are experiencing extreme fire danger, 90s and very dry and windy. Managed to make it through with no conflagration.

They will also allow fireworks on the 24th, a Utah state holiday. Pioneer Day, one that borders on the religious, but us non-Mormons celebrate it as Pie and Beer day.

That limiting has made the days they are legal quite noisy here, but I don't mind. In fact we contributed.
