Animals Leaving Yellowstone...Pending Earthquake?

What are the cone head scientists saying about it? They have a lot of instruments there because they know its a possible trouble spot.

Well, we'll soon know. If the animals return but there has not been an earthquake, then they were probably seeking fresher pastures for a while.

Will there be a follow up story? Probably not.

Where are they going to? They must turn up somewhere.

I am pretty sure buffalo have been migrating for years. Yes I believe animals have a sixth sense that warns them something is up. Unless I missed something I see nothing unusual.

They are probably going to their summer range.

Max, Thanks for the link, it has some good basic information. A great starting point for a beginner like me, And in terms I can easily follow, and I didn't have to research every other word.

Animal behaviour seems to be more accurate than scientific predictions where earthquakes are concerned, according to a programme I watched the other day.

I'm not sure about the animal thing, - the death toll at mt St Helens was shocking for animals.
Dogs take off when fire works are on too.

According to this bison do not migrate in the spring. Indeed, why would that? It's spring. Succulent green shoots springing forth everywhere, it's the richest food source of the year.

There seems to have been a lot of seismic rumblings all along the Western flanks of the Americas - California, Panama and Chile...
Lets hope there's nothing to it.

That was a month ago.
I've read stories in the past about animals leaving an area prior to an earthquake, but don't recall how far in advance they do this (generally speaking).
Do they usually leave an area a day, a week, a month, a year before the quake?

these stories are really old, they used to be told back in the 70-80's when I lived in the Yellowstone area (Jackson Hole). We told the tourists the spaceships were taking them, but we couldn't get the government to stop it.

When I lived near Seattle, we had a large earthquake (over a 6). A few hours before it hit, my husband and I saw a couple of raccoons walking slowly through our back yard. This was very unusual, as they are usually nocturnal.

I think that the animals can be sensitive to the early tremors of earthquakes, and there used to be someone who actually predicted quakes in California by reading the lost and found ads. he claimed that when more animals went missing, or were found somewhere other than their home; they seemed to be sensing a quake and tried to get away from it. Apparently, his percentage rate of prediction was actually pretty good.
As for the Yellowstone Bison and elk; they were probably just moving to lower elevations as the snow became too deep in higher elevations for them to forage. In the spring, as the snows melt, and grass comes back to the mountainsides; they will probably go back up.

Even in North Idaho, the animals are looking for places to forage closer to towns, as shown by these moose walking through the Main Street of downtown Sandpoint, Idaho today.

I think these guys probably just wanted huckleberry pie and coffee for breakfast, don't you ??
