Another religious thread of speculation

I see it as our genetics play a crucial role in our predispositions. Like attracts like. If someone has a tendency to like violence, that is what they will engage in. I even think our genetics play a large role in our need for believing in God.
I think it is more cultural, and exposure. Genes can be present, but never expressed. It is exposure that switches those genes on, according to what I've read anyway.

Basically the author is an atheist who claims everyone is an atheist at birth. From birth forward people are succumbed by religion based on the beliefs of their guardian's who may or may not be religious.

The assumption is babies and adolescences take on the beliefs of their guardians.
The is just garbidy-gook of the author's belief toward atheism.

I apologize for contents of this article. I failed to understand the stupidity of the article.
Imagine babies and adolescences learning from their guardians??

People discount culture far too readily. If you're born in America, you're more likely to be Christian. In India? No so much. As children we are very pliable, and how we're brought up doesn't carry the same weight of what we learn later in life - it's more powerful. It's braver to be an atheist, imo. Far too many people with a religious belief are actually masking the fact that they're no longer looking, searching, learning.

I believe religion is completely cultural. God is somewhat cultural because we must be told there is a god, after which we have to use our imagination to create a god we can live with. Or if we lack imagination, we can just buy into ready made variations of what a god will provide for us.

Here is the crazy thing about atheist. They believe there is no God.
They believe this!
They often say they have no belief and yet they do. Their faith is based on no belief in God.
I'm puzzled as to what this faith consist of?
You don't believe there is a God but you believe there is no God????????????????????
So you put your spirtual understanding.......in .............................nothing.
You live, you die and that's it! Do I have that right. You are like an ant. Someone steps on you and that's it??????
So live your life, get sick and die and don't reach out for anything beyond yourself. Just die.
Miss you but we all have to go sometime, ho hum!

Love it. Athiest have it all figured out.

The existence of God is all around us. The balance of nature and the planets . The trees take in co2 and product oxygen for us to breath. History shows us the intervention of God in all our endeavors. Yet you believe that it is all random and not connected.
Die like the ant then and don't make any further comments.

Is it anthropological/cultural parallelism or is there something to support the existence of God when so many different cultures worship a supreme being. 🤔

I lean toward thinking there is something that many cultures tie into. It isn’t just a facade but I also don’t think it is anything like a person or anything else we can point to. So we don’t need to think there is ‘a god’, there is just what God refers to which resonates with something we are as people. I think it helps some people make what that is more real in their life to think of it as something like a person and it does no harm other than to set up some amount of cognitive dissonance.

IMO, the OP Reddit link statement was an example of someone with hateful emotional ideas and flawed thought processes blabbering without much wisdom. The Reddit post primed his agenda with paragraphs of various facts and then ended with two overstated rigid sentences that were really just a way to bash ALL those who believe (in any religion) widely , name calling with "criminal", "elitists" "gullible", and then blame them for a lack of world peace as though it is the prime reason anthropologists would just laugh at. The Reddit person is a excellent example of an emotional someone to ignore because they probably cannot discuss issues in balanced ways.

So not a thread I initially thought was worth posting on and then others just used it as an excuse to discuss atheists generally.

Any adult person who cannot accept the reality that people throughout Human history just really enjoy making stuff up are in some state of cognitive dissonance (denial), arrested development (gullible) or they are aware of what they are doing because they are a criminal exploiting the naive congregations that you commonly find in places of worship all around the world.

All religions are elitists, if they weren't, then they would not have a false-dichotomy to believe in the first place. For this reason, religions are not all-inclusive and therefore incompatible with things like World Peace (which is necessarily all-inclusive).

Thread was then followed up with a few members that probably didn't read the OP's nonsense, talking

  • generally about atheist attitudes
  • does god exists
  • does god have gender
  • beliefs are due to culture or genetics

Problem with threads like this I've criticized in the past, is they begin poorly posed without adequate focus and then SF members go off discussing several different issues creating confusion. If people want to talk about religion so much, why not craft an OP narrowly among a long list, like:
  • Does god, for those that think he exists, have a gender?
  • How does science not support or support the notion a god exists?
  • Why do anthropologists think civilizations create the notion of gods?
  • Why are rigid atheists and rigid theists unable to discuss god without becoming emotional and illogical?

This was an argument used often on the Skeptic Thinking Forum I had participated on for some time time. And the biggest proponents were the atheists themselves. There is danger when beliefs over ride clear thinking.

Why do atheist posts sound so angry? I for one don't give a rat's behind about expressions of non belief. I would feel the same way if it was done to me. I live that. I'm no evangelist.

I don't find that. I find most people in real life are happy to respect the beliefs and non beliefs of others.

I do get angry when people think their beliefs should be imposed on others though - and that seems to me something some strident religious groups do.

That is not true. There are born predators and there are born victims and there is the landscape.
If you don't know where you are, how are you going to find your way out? And if you don.t know who's around you 'how are you going to know when to leave?

An opinion piece too full of inaccuracies to be taken seriously.
Yes, such as "atheists are the majority of all people for all the time Humans have lived on the planet." I wouldn need some very serious proof of that before I believe it.

Totally disagree. Human beings live in hierarchies and need a leader. 'God' was invented to take just that position. There is a need to believe in a superior being who is responsible for everything that happens.

Sorry, l meant to say for when it's written down in a public forum, and not so much face to face.

When I finally came to terms with my own atheism, I was surprised at how many of my friends opened up about their own. Most were quiet on the subject because there is little to be gained by acquiring the disapproval of the Christian community. Anger seems to be a Christian response, not all Christians of course.

A few years ago, some important but vocal atheists came out of the closet defending a lack of belief as a rational response to that which cannot be known, and this created a heated debate, and some of them had few qualms about angering the opposition, but to say atheists are the angry ones is a limited viewpoint. Most atheists that I have met see religion as irrelevant to their own lives. They don't indulge in unethical behavior any more than the average Christian, but they don't have a belief in gods. They don't see that as a sin or a wrong perspective.

This post seems to be very judgmental. Why? Relax, it is your life and it is different than others, why can't you just accept that other people have different perspectives?
