Any ideas about repairing or replacing a CD player?

My very old CD player finally conked out. It sounds like it is trying to play, but I get a Table Error message, and there is no music. I googled that error, and it does describe what mine is doing, and gives detailed instructions about how to repair it.

This is a Sony CD player that "Shuffles" up to 100 CD's. I only play one at a time, though. But the CD's are put in a revolving platform, and that's the problem. The platform is turned by a small disc, connected by a "belt" which is like a little rubber band. That apparently slipped off. My son came over, and we spent hours removing the top of the player and trying to get the band back in the right place. It looks right, but still nothing turns.

At this point, I'm ready to give up and just buy a new one. But where? A good one, such as a Bose player, costs over $300 online! Many of them require Bluetooth, which I don't have. Is there such a thing as just a plain, simple CD player out there? Otherwise, I'm stuck with about 1000 non-playable discs!

Those kinds of belts can get sticky and bind or rip, turn to tar, or just get too loose to operate properly over time. I've seen people order belts from eBay to repair things like WalkMan players, but getting at them is harder than finding a replacement part.

I feel your pain. Check out Crutchfields. com and see if there is anything you may be interested in. I don't think you'll find anything that will do a 100 discs anymore.

Don't forget, all Blu Ray players also play CD's, and can often be cheaper than a dedicated player.

My CD player has seen better days, and can sometimes not want to play a disc. It was £700 or so when I bought it. But unless you're an audiophile type, the cheaper players these days are actually very good.

Here's a thought - like old vinyl records, some albums have only one, maybe 2 songs you really want to hear. How about digitizing the few songs on each CD disc all into MP3 files, put them all on a 32GB USB thumb drive and play that on most modern sound players, DVD player or even the computer? You still have the original CD's to capture songs you missed.

That 100 discs thing was kind of ridiculous. I never put that many in to play, or anything close to it. Maybe I'd shuffle between 2-3 discs.

I did look at Crutchfields, but unfortunately I don't have $5000 or $6000 to spend on a CD player. (Not joking, those were their prices. Even their lowest prices were well up in the hundreds.)

Ohhh, sorry. I only looked that they had items in stock, not at particulars. One of the cd players I have is the Integra 6 disc player. I got it in 2018 for 300, the current price is 400, which is an average % that most audio electronics have increased in price post pandemic.

6000 for a cd player isn't so bad, it's the other 60,000 I'd have to spend to upgrade the rest of the system so it would make any difference-- then maybe I'd have to upgrade the cd player again...

Off topic I know but it's been so long since we had a CD player I had to look it up. I remember now we did have portable C D players a long time ago for when we walked. She ordered a Coconise player from Amazon to test a better light weight way to listen to music.

My wife has over 35,000 music files on her computer. All genres and from countries we don't even know what the words mean, but enjoy the beat while were walking. She uploads about 200 at a time on our Coconise players. The variety seems endless since she has so much music stored on her computer.

A so called boom box can replace it. I have a Sony compact CD player with radio and cassette player. Easy to use and light weight, not expensive. The sound is only okay, not a brag. Walmart may have it because they sell low older tech things. Or order it online.

My Sony 5 disc changer died a few years ago.

I looked online for a new cd player but they're really expensive now.

I do have a dvd player for watching movies and that also plays cds.

But my son bought me a decent sounding set of speakers for my PC so I listen to music on my laptop.

I have copied CDs to my hard drive and I'm able to mix and match playlists on the Windows Media Player.

Also, you can download a free Audio editing software called Audacity that allows you to record to your hard drive any audio that plays out of your speakers. So anything you listen to on the internet can be recorded and saved as an mp3 file. You can even adjust the sound before saving it to file.

I lost count of the number of CDs I own but if I want to hear them, I put them on my hard drive and listen from there.

-------------------I just don't give so much as a dang about the DJ Saturday night crap.
I have hundreds of DVD's and Blu-ray discs and CD's but I tire.

............It's not that I don't appreciate all that old crap, It bores me and I look to the future young.
To me those old CD's are like fishing for days and days, fishing all summer long and catching Walleyes you never intend to eat. A waste of time.

Can one imagine what the young talent by the thousands will do going forward, saying ado to the old farts!
This lil girl has been doing this since she was maybe 8 years old? Now nearing 20. How can I not appreciate giving her my time to listen.

I feel a whole lot better with cool music over ear splittting B.S.

The lil Lady plays a Taylor and Baldwin. In a home studio possibly with a relative playing back up and her adding vocal backups.

I'm not saying chasing the big speaker stuff is a waste of time but my ears hate em.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will continue researching. I should have mentioned that I need a "component" type, as what I have now is a component system, which is the (nonfunctioning) CD player, a good amplifier, and two very good floor-standing speakers. If I get a self-contained unit, I'll probably have to get rid of all that other stuff, which could be hard to do. I probably couldn't even lift the speakers. My son found an old CD component in his basement that he forgot about, and he's bringing it over so we can see if it works. (I hope!)

Right now, I'm thinking back nostagically to my childhood, when I had a simple, ancient model "victrola."

What kind of speakers do you have?

Like so many people say, “We are a throw away society.” Maybe that’s what will happen to your player.
