Watched it...loved it. A lot to digest, at times.I don't know where I came across this series (maybe here), but rather than pay for it through a streaming source, I borrowed the first season from my public library. Liked it so well that I put a hold on the second season.
"A Place to Call Home" - an Aussie series that takes place in the early 1950s.
Fortunately, my library has all six seasons on DVD.
My library offers Kanopy & Hoopla. As far as I can tell, Los Angeles Public Library system plans to continue offering both. Sure hope so.Hoopla's switching over to Kanopy at the end of May for us, I guess I'll wait til then, I do have a library membership. Something I haven't tried other than getting the DVDs and watching them at home. Not sure of what's involved at our end.
I agree that it was a good series. The best years were with Douglas Henshall, even though his character's piousness wore pretty thin.Started watching a BritBox production called 'Shetland' by Ann Cleeves, 4-5 years ago, then only had 4 seasons. Now 9, the characters have all changed but it was a good crime series. Because of my age & memory, I stated back again watching from season 1 finally made it to season 5, so it's all new. But I can't tell. I like the British crime series. Seems like women are always the victims, they sure have a rough time of it.
Thanks for this. I saw the trailer and was waiting to hear a review from someone whose taste I trusted before diving in.We just wrapped up Adolescence on Netflix, which follows the case of a 13 year-old boy who stabs and kills a female classmate. It is not so much a crime drama as it is a commentary on raising children in this day and age. The way his parents were affected had me in tears at the end.
I saw this. I think I really liked it.Watched it...loved it. A lot to digest, at times.
Where are you watching these series? Acorn?Decided to focus my streaming to one at a time, gets too confusing switching back & forth. Currently just starting season 7 of 9 on 'Shetland'. Will switch back to 'Brokenwood' (series 5 of 9) when I finish 'Shetland'. It's down to 6 episodes each season. 3 left X 6 = 18 episodes left, 3 nights watching.. I see the light at the end of the tunnel., so to speak. Still having trouble with the Scottish dialog. At least the New Zealand dialog is more understandable. Then going to give the Australian series (A Place to Call Home) a go, sounds interesting..
Shetland on BritBox, - Brokenwood on AcornTV, A Place To Call Home (?). Not sure where I seen it advertised. Also interesting, Band of Brothers, most or at least some of the actors portraying US GI's are born & bred English/UK actors.Where are you watching these series? Acorn?
DH & I bought the boxed set of Band of Brothers when it was first released, and have watched it at least half a dozen times. A truly excellent series. Some of the DVD's special features provide great context. Also interesting, Band of Brothers, most or at least some of the actors portraying US GI's are born & bred English/UK actors.
Cancelled both BritBox & AcornTV this AM due to my lack of interest! The series tabled were A Place to Call Home & BrokenWood Mysteries. A little of BrokenWood goes a long ways, quirky & redundantly boring. A Place to Call Home has with the completion of Season 1 become obsessed with WWII & The Holocaust theme, of which I become locked into prior & needed to escape. It's important in itself but is too dark at the moment.Finished 'Shetland' 'Brokernwood' is quirky but can be tabled since each episode has a solo theme and easy to follow.. I just started 'A Place to Call Home', Watched first episode of first series (Season) on AcornTV. It does appear to be watchable, so will continue to stay the course & watch more. Thanks for the recommendation. Still like the laptop venue. No ads. That says a lot about my tastes & patience.
Had an issue a couple days ago with AcornTV, no access, discovered via duckduckgo search they had updated either the login or website. it was a problem with the scrpt. It's resolved & was accessible within 24 hours.
Speaking of 'Bees' the Beekeeper with Jason Statham. The moody action hero I've come to like. Is a good action movie. I also enjoyed 'The Queen Bees'.On Netflix: watching a cute little movie called Queen Bees. Has an ensemble cast of actors of a certain age. I actually suspect that I had previously watched it, but am enjoying it again.
@JeeperDon, I liked "Troppo" too but it was kind of intense in places... the female lead was very goodFor a good time in Australia, solving mysteries with two enjoyably odd lead characters, try 'Troppo' on Prime Video. Two 8ep seasons.
[EDIT: I just learned that the short hair of the woman lead wasn't for the show. She had just recovered from stage4 lymphoma. They thought the short hair fit the character.]
Yeah, I don't watch prison films anymore. They're all the same. I liked Brute Force (1947) with Lancaster and Hume Cronyn; and Birdman of Alcatraz (1962). But haven't liked any since. I've also gotten tired of kidnapping films, and won't watch them again. No way to do anything new with that story line.I started Oz last night, which is about an American men's prison. I might not continue bc it is so brutal but also it's so well done I'm gonna try to hang in there.
