Are you strictly a name brand shopper?

I know a woman that will only buy Tide because she says it has the highest quality even though it comes at a steeper price. She buys only name brand products because she reasons that they have to be better...

I shop around. I prefer Tide also, but often use generic brands for other things. I buy my K cup coffee pods in bulk at the grocery store where I can mix and match. I get a variety of special coffees at a fraction of the price of name brand boxed sets, with no noticeable reduction in quality.

LOL...Tide washing powder?...that brings back childhood memories..it was one of our Big name brands waay back in the 60's, it's not been on sale here for decades!!

No I'm not a strictly brand name consumer...although clearly some brand names do perform much better than the cheaper or unknown brands..and I buy those, but I do try lesser known other brands at least once if someone has recommended it , if it works better then the branded one I use, then I continue using it....case in Point for example is generic medication!!

Yes, generic medications are a huge savings along with dollar store detergent...

I laugh a lot when I see "New and Improved" on laundry detergent!! 2122.gif

Tide! Yes, that brings back memories. I don't stick to named brands - It'll try own / budget brands and if they're OK, I'll use them.
We have a couple of very popular stores here - Aldi and Lidl that sell a mix of branded and own label goods. There are stories of people shopping there but transferring their purchases into carrier bags supplied by up-market stores!

As for generic medication. In some cases this is fine, but I feel that sometimes the formulation means that they are absorbed at different rates to branded versions.

I use some generics, but have found that name brands are better in some items. I'm also a Tide user when it comes to laundry detergent, interesting that it is not sold in the UK, it is a leading brand here.

Our leading brand of liquid detergent here is Ariel ( which I use)... not surprisingly made by Proctor and Gamble the same manufacturer of Tide according to Wiki.. Ariel is...

quote.. ''It is the flagship brand in Procter & Gamble's European, Mexican, Japanese, Brazilian, Peruvian, Turkish, Filipino, Pakistani, Indian, Colombian, Chilean and Venezuelan portfolios.

We have loads of other very popular brands of course..Daz, Persil, Fairy to name a few ...and supermarket own brands too

I use a lot of store brand items as they are less expensive.. However, there are some things that only brand name will do.. for example.. I will not use anything but Contadina tomato products for my Italian dishes.. It has the best taste IMO.

As for laundry soap. I use Woolite for my clothes as it is much gentler and prevents fading.. I use Woolite for DARK fabrics almost exclusively. It really keeps dark clothing and other items looking new.

Price determines which I buy and if I get "what I paid for", I don't purchase it again and then I try something else. I look at it as "You don't know if you don't try"so I try.

For some products I buy name brand only. Detergent I buy Fairy or Persil non bio. I find that off brand cleaning products are more perfumery which my allergies won't tolerate.

I used to buy store brand basmati rice but found the name brand made much nicer rice.

I buy many name brand items, but try other products too. We use Tide also....a forum Tide Commercial...where is our Tide users commercial stipend. :)

Mostly, although I am discovering generics that are equally tasty. I'm willing to try it, once, lol;)

I buy both name brands and off brands, sometimes there's no difference, and on occasion the off brand is actually better. Whether food, clothing or cleaning products, I decide for myself and don't care much about the label. I'm currently using Kirkland Brand (from Costco) dish soap, because I like it better than the thick Palmolive, or the strong smell of other name brands. It also has a mild citrus smell, and is environmentally friendly, not full of harsh chemicals...so that's a plus for me.

you are smart;) Many generics etc., are good. Dawn is sure not what it used to be is it? Or is that my imagination?

There are two Dawns now---plain old Dawn, and Dawn Ultra. Dawn Ultra is as good as it ever was, but the regular Dawn is not. Makes me think they lowered the quality on the regular. I do like it. Use it for everything, even washing the car.

Aw heck I buy a bit of both. There are basics like tissues, potty paper, even ketchup and bread that are the same thing generic. Then there are things like Clean Day. Pricier but the smell is so worth it. I could buy generic cleaning spray at a fraction of the cost but the lemon verbena makes me feel good.

I also buy both, buying more of the generic or store brands than are proven to be just as good.

Exceptions are-

Mayonnaise- has to be Hellman's

Canned plum tomatoes- not so much the brand but the type from the San Marzano region of Italy are best.

Electric dishwasher detergent- Cascade

Laundry detergent- since washing for carpenter/builder husband and a young son whose laundry needed Tide ended; inexpensive detergent is fine for my clothes.

If the truth were known, the Generic/Store Brand products are probably made by the Name Brand manufacturers, and are identical. The Walmart/Major grocery store brands, etc., list the same ingredients, and perform equally well to the Name brands. On Monday they make the Name brand,, and on Tuesday, they make the Store brand...on the same assembly line. The primary difference is the percentage of Profit the consumer pays.

I remember when Whirlpool was the manufacturer for the Sears washer sold under the name of Kenmore, so I bet there's truth to what you say, Don.

Sure...there are only about 3 or 4 appliance manufacturers...each one making multiple "Name" brands. Sears, for example, certainly doesn't make any of their Kenmore appliances....they contract the actual manufacturing out to Whirlpool, GE, or whichever manufacturer offers them the best deal. The Name on the product has very little to do, anymore, with the contents or quality of the product.
