Are your standards slipping with age?

Maybe you don't change the sheets as often or clean the house regularly. Perhaps you shower less often and wear clothes a little longer before washing them. I justify sone of these changes as good conservation measures in regard to water and energy. You?

I've become more "PERSNICKITY" ( hows that for an old word)... I'm fussier about things now... not less.. It's got to be MY way.. because I've spent too much of my life having it other folk's way.. By the way... when you were younger... did you ever hear people say "old people smell funny"? or .. that old people have a certain odor.. No they don't... but when they stop showering or changing clothes as often.. they do.

It is not age that does this; if I am painting, or cleaning, or other dirty chores,, I have the shower after, and before I go out.
living alone, my house is always cleanish; no better and no worse than it ever has been.

I tend not to clean house every day like i use to do ,and i have to nag my Hubby to shave and wash ,since he finished work he's not so bothered about being presentable .just glad i don't share a bedroom with him .

I'd have to answer yes to this.....I've seen it with my mother and gradually I'm having to accept that there is only so much this ole' bode can do.

That said... I DO acknowledge that Americans developed fettish about personal hygiene. Being in the healthcare profession, I have dealth with so many people of different cultures.. It's just not demanded in many cultures that everyone shower everyday and change their clothes.. I remember in my twenties, I had a coworker from Europe. She wore the same skirt all week, and did not shower.. by Thursday... she had an odor.. I can't say it was a BAD odor, but it wasn't perfume either. Someone had a "talk" with her and she was shocked that Americans showered every single day.

On the other hand, as a Kid, I was given a bath and a hairwashing once a week on Saturday night... for Church the next morning. My grandparents and parents did not shower every day. AND I don't recall any bad odors... but then again.. we all smelled that way.

No shower in our house growing up and Saturday night was also bath night. As we grew up there was always fighting about who went first or second because the hot water would run out and the rings around the tub after each bath became harder to scrub by the next kid in line...

QS, that is not an age thing; when I was at school/Uni, we just didn't have showers in our houses.
it wasn't till the 70's that we had shower rooms and all that kind of thing becoming a norm, and automatic washing machines.
my mum and dad still bath/shower in the evening rather than the morning; habit I guess.

We didn't have a shower either... just a bathtub.. and it wasn't until I went away to college that I discovered we were supposed to shower every morning.. So of course to fit in I did... and now I feel horrible if I don't .. But then again, I'm still working. I don't know about when I retire..

One has to wonder though about all this showering, cleansing and use of antibacterial products.. Is it always a good thing? I have to say, that in the winter my skin gets so dry that I need to slather on lotions and creams.. I think sometimes that especially in the winter, when we are not hot and sweaty.. is it always necessary to shower every single day?

About personal hygiene, no, that hasn't changed. But I don't make a mad dash to do the dishes after each and every meal. I'm OK with having a few dishes in the sink (I live alone, so obviously not many dishes), and take care of dishes, countertops, etc. at my convenience. And I don't dust the furniture as often as I used to, I only do it when I see visible dust. So yes, there has been a slight slackening, but not that much.

I do agree with those who feel that with all our modern bathroom conveniences, there is no excuse for not bathing.

I wonder too, QS, eating dirt never did me any harm!
i also agree that there is no excuse for not keeping clean, but I, personally, do not have a shower every morning as soon as I get up, if I am not going out...
i do change my sheets and clothes regularly; clean clothes and a shower if I go out....and I still iron!

Well, there's bathing... and there's keeping clean.. Is a daily bath or shower necessary? Especially in the winter and when you aren't doing much to get dirty. Wouldn't less full showers and bathes be ok so long as you keep the nether parts washed? My dad used to take what he called a "GI bath" Washing his face.. his underarms and his personal business.

When I worked I showered every morning and ironed clothes that had any wrinkles at all. I rarely iron now except for a few cotton items we have that really are a mass of wrinkles. But I try to avoid buying linen or 100% cotton.

Now I go to the gym 3 days a week and afterwards I come home and do my muscle work. Then I shower.

Living and caring for the 2 kids here, there is no way I can "let it go" till tomorrow.
Only way I can take a shower is when both of them are asleep for the night that is if the 8 year old doesnt wake up "Papa, I gotta to go pee".

My standards have always been high and remain so even in the Octogenarian state in which I now live. I hit the shower first thing in the morning, wear clean and neatly pressed clothes, sleep on clean and fresh bedding, use deodorant, keep a clean and neat apartment, after all, I am Mr. Wonderful.

Our apartment isn't filthy by no means, but isn't "inspection" clean either...........that is, until we know that someone is coming to visit us. Then, my wife turns into a "white tornado" in cleaning. Since I'm the one retired, and home each day, I try to keep the apartment somewhat clean, but have other things to do besides keeping it "spotless". One thing we BOTH like is, that I'm retired and can do laundry, change bed linens, run dishwasher, vacuum and do some dusting during the day when she is at work. When we both worked, all of this stuff was done on the weekend. To us, weekends are for having fun, not home cleaning, unless it's absolutely necessary to "tidy up" some for visitors.

As far as dishes go, we've had/used a dishwasher in each place we lived at. Since wife doesn't load it very well, she will rinse dishes off and put them on the counter and I will load the dishwasher, run it and empty it.

With ironing, don't do it anymore unless wife has something that is just too wrinkled for her and then.......I will bring out the ironing board/iron and do it. Among things I am good at, ironing is right up there at the top. Heck, I even iron our Halloween costumes to get the wrinkles out!

As far as showering goes, wife takes a shower each morning and I take a shower each night.

Very well could be true, but am LMAO!!
