At least 10 people are dead and 30 left injured after a vehicle plowed into a crowd celebrating New Year on Bourbon Street in New Orleans' French Quarter.

The driver rammed into the large group at high speed, then got out and started firing a weapon, witnesses said.

Police returned fire, and two officers were shot by the suspect and are in stable condition.

Witnesses claim the suspect was 'wearing full body armor' and 'armed with an assault rifle', according to reports on social media.

Videos circulating on social media showed a chaotic scene at the tourist hotspot as people ran from the casualty-strewn area while bullets rang out in the background.

Dozens of police officers have responded to what authorities have declared a 'mass casualty event' and a portion of the road has been cordoned off. Paramedics, ambulances and vehicles from the coroner's office were also seen at the scene.

Ambulances have transported the wounded to five area hospitals, the city added, and the FBI have taken over the ongoing investigation.

No information about the suspect has been released at this time and it is unclear if any arrests have been made.

The horror unfolded at around 3:15am local time Wednesday when the vehicle, which appeared to be a Ford SUV, plowed into the crowd at the intersection of Bourbon Street and Canal Street.

A man, who claimed to witness the incident while out with his wife, wrote on X that he saw the SUV 'speeding' down the road and 'running people over'.

Another alleged witness told WLWT that she saw the vehicle strike the crowd and multiple officers open fire at the suspect. She says she started running and only escaped 'by the grace of god'.

Kevin Garcia, 22, said the car was 'slamming into everyone on the left side of Bourbon sidewalk'. He heard gunshots ring out and claims a 'body came flying at me', CNN reported.

Watching this now. So horrible and senseless!! The killer is dead, thankfully.

My sister just got back from NOLA Monday. My BIL's brother has a vacation condo on Royal Street which is one over from Bourbon. They spent the weekend but didn't want stay for the New Year crowds.

Such a shame, such a waste of innocent lives. May those who were killed by this hateful lunatic, rest in peace. Sympathy for their families and the other victims of his vehicle attack. This suicide by cop has to stop, if you want to kill youself, be man enough to do it yourself and let the innocents live their lives in peace.

Just remembered the Sugar Bowl is today at the Superdome. There are tons of Georgia and Notre Dame fans in town and could likely be victims.

Thinking of that this morning too.
They are checking the stadium area … they had mentioned in the news, of cancelling the game, but I doubt they will.

There was another but less lethal attack in Germany last night as well. And some kind violent protest in France that included burning cars. Not necessarily coordinated but the holidays are a known target of choice for terrorists.

Speedy recovery to all victims and RIP those murdered.

I doubt they will either unless the terrorism aspect is found to extend beyond this one perpetrator. It's a quarterfinal playoff bowl and is sold out (over 75,000 capacity) so it would be logistically nearly impossible to reschedule.

Ah, I was just coming here to ask if that covered flag is an ISIS flag. Same color... and seems to be that white section at the bottom. My laptop graphics are lousy though, so maybe I'm seeing things. This is the ISIS flag:

Seeing the same thing all over social media. Surely there are witnesses who would've seen it unfurled during the attack.

In a related story from a few days ago...

Virginia man accused of amassing largest homemade explosives cache ever found by FBI. Agents discovered more than 150 pipe bombs and other devices in raid on home of Brad Spafford, 36.

Agents found the weapons, including more than 150 pipe bombs and explosive devices, during a 17 December raid on a 20-acre property in Isle of Wight county, according to court documents.

Authorities initially arrested the 36-year-old owner, Brad Spafford, on a single charge of possessing an unregistered short-barrel rifle. But as bomb squads swept the property, they found explosive devices marked “lethal” in a detached garage, according to court documents.

Inside the house, investigators discovered more pipe bombs packed into a backpack bearing a hand grenade patch and a logo for “#NoLivesMatter”, a slogan linked to a far-right extremist movement that promotes violent acts on encrypted online channels, according to a recent New Jersey homeland security assessment.

Some nowadays put very little value on a human life. Why are they in this world? We don't need them. If they hate the world that they live in, why don't they end their own lives, and let the rest of us go on living in peace.

This one thought he was getting 72 virgins in paradise for his reward. I can't detail here what I hope 72 demons in hell are doing to him.

Here's a video from last night. What's the deal with all the garbage all over the streets?

New Year's Eve on Bourbon Street is wall-to-wall drunk people. They're not thinking about finding a garbage can for their trash.
