Everyone blames fossil fuels for the global climate change. That is true; fossil fuels have contributed to climate change. However, no one seems to talk about over population of our globe. I wonder why? Too many people fighting for dwindling resources. I studied this at the university in the early 1970s but it seems to be a politically incorrect topic today. I wonder why?
You are Right On. With all the problems our planet/environment is facing, Overpopulation is probably the root cause of so many of the problems. A few years ago, the UN did a study that said that the optimum "supportable" human population would be around 5 billion. The latest numbers show the population to be right around 7.7 billion....with most estimates calling for 9 billion by mid century and 12 billion by the end of this century. Almost half of the current population is living at or below poverty standards, and that number increases with every passing year. The biggest population growth is taking place among the societies who already cannot support themselves. These numbers are leading to situations where lack of proper nutrition and unsanitary living conditions are driving global health problems to new heights.
Humanity is quickly reaching a "tipping point" where the populations are going to consist primarily of the "haves" and "have nots", and there will be one massive global conflict between the two. We are already seeing the beginnings of this in places like Hong Kong, and Venezuela, where riots are becoming the norm.
The Amazon rain forest has been the primary mechanism for cleaning the atmosphere, and it is being increasingly "harvested" for the need for more land for increased food production in South America....caused by more and more people.
Here, we see the increase in drug use, crime and homelessness, as more and more people are unable to support themselves and cope. Then, automation and robotics have to be factored in for the takeover of large numbers of what used to be good paying manufacturing jobs.
As human populations continue to expand unchecked, poor little animals like these Koalas will certainly feel the effects, and ultimately quite likely join the ranks of extinct species.
