BBB is Missing!

Yesterday afternoon BBB came up missing. Hubby said he went into the house to get him his afternoon bread treat and when he came back BBB wasn't there. We had company so the driveway gate was open and I figure he might have wandered out. He did this once before but stayed on the fence line, crowing his displeasure with the fence keeping him from getting back in.

Hubby says he was gone too fast to have gotten out of hearing range. BBB was very vocal and would always crow an answer back when I called him. I fear that something grabbed him quick enough that he didn't have time to put up a ruckus. No feathers or signs of a skirmish are evident.

I called him off and on for a few hours last night, hoping to hear him answer me back . I knew he was really gone when he wasn't roosting on his perch last night.

It was eerily quiet this morning without his wake up crow. We are going to miss his funny antics and cute waddling butt as he ran around with the Gangstas.

That is so sad Ozarkgal,if you are like me you feel one of your children is missing i do hope he is just hiding somewhere and will be home soon,if he has been taken by someone let's hope they look after him, he is a beautiful looking Rooster

There is certainly a big hole in life's fabric today. Never in a million years did I think I would get attached to a chicken, but there it is. Hubby, surprisingly is even more upset. He called him Cluck and got a kick out of feeding him bread crumbs in the morning. BBB was always waiting on the deck rail for his treat. I just hope if he was taken by an animal it was quick.

Well, BBB's fate is sealed. This morning when I went out to feed the cats, there were feathers everywhere in the coop. It is a strange situation because first of all, BBB never steps foot in there and, when he was missing yesterday evening around 5-6 pm, I thoroughly checked the coop and the nesting boxes in there because the dogs were intensely sniffing and standing on their hind legs looking in the boxes.

I checked it out and there was nothing there, and certainly no feathers. I wonder if BBB was hiding somewhere when I was looking for him and got caught later...it's a mystery. I followed his feathers down to the creek, which runs behind the coop.

RIP...BBB...we'll miss your happy little chicken butt and wake up call.

Thanks everyone for your nice words...it really helps.

That stinks. Sorry for your loss. Fox or skunk maybe. We have had a large amount of skunks this year in the campgrounds. They love to get under campers but mothballs seem to deter them. The difficult part is telling the male from the female moth. :sorry:

This is terrible news and I'm so sorry to hear it, Ozarkgal. BBB had become an important part of not only your lives but here on the forum, too. We lost a hen occasionally at the vineyard and it was always difficult. He will be missed.

My heart goes out to you... They do indeed become 'one of the family' and a great sadness when their 'time' comes.

But...alive and happy on the Other Side. Animals (and birds) that have known human love and companionship retain their individuality after 'death'.
You've not seen the last of him...

Sorry to see your BBB is missing I feel for you losing your pet, I hope he comes home soon, he is a handsome rooster.

OzarkGal, I also add my condolences to that of everyone else's. It doesn't matter if it is a large dog, or a little Rooster, losing any part of ones Animal Family is always heartbreaking. Chickens are an intelligent bird, and can be very entertaining and enjoyable to have around, and it is sad that he is gone . I think it is especially hard when something unknown just snatches them from us, and we can never puzzle out quite what happened for sure.
Sending you a big, big hug to comfort you.....

He'll always part of your life OG. :)
Many years later I still often think of Harry the Magpie and his 'wife' Elvie, who became dear old friends for many years. One day Harry just didn't turn up for his freebies. Elvie sat on the clothes line for hours calling him and it was heartbreaking.

I never knew what became of Harry, maybe just old age, or accident but knowing would have been good.
I did unfortunately know of Elvie's end. About a month later I spotted her poor little squashed body and feathers on the road near the tree they'd always nested in. There wasn't enough left to even consider burying.

After all those years of flying across that road to my yard I can't believe she was caught unawares by the traffic.
I sometimes wonder if she didn't end it all out of grief. They're very smart birds and it's not too far a stretch to consider emotion being a part of that.

I used to feed a pair of magpies too Di, and one day the male came in on his own and used to sit on this frame that i used to have dried flowers in , he would sit there cooing ever so softly to his reflection in the mirror, he did this until the day i moved all up he came for about 3 months, so i believe that animals grieve just like humans

A very sad story. bbb.jpg he was part of your family.

Several houses back we had a neighbour who was leaving the country and they gave us three ducks.

We had a well fenced garden and the plan was to erect a shelter for them.

However overnight they were all killed by a fox?

We discovered a hole in the ground under one of the fence panels.

Di..that's sweet, yet sad story. Animals can become a part of our lives, even if they aren't "owned" by us, but merely grace us with their presence. I used to have a mourning dove that nested in a maidenhair fern on my patio. She was so tame I could walk up and part the ferns and have a look at her and the babies. She did this for three years in a row, then she was gone.

Jillaroo..I know that animals grieve ...a lot of animal species mate for life, and you know they have to form deep attachments to their mates. I also know that animals can form deep emotional bonds with humans and grieve when they lose them. We've all heard the stories of dogs lying on their masters graves, refusing to leave.

If you haven't seen the movie "Hachi, a Dog's Tale", try to see it. It's based on a true story about a Japanese dog named Hachiko who accompanied his master to the train station every day and was there waiting for him when he returned. Hachi carried this routine on for several years after his master died, until finally Hachi died too. Richard Gere played Hachi's owner in the movie.

Animals have always been an important presence in my life, and I am richer in memories because of it.

Thanks to everyone for all your kind words about BuckBuckBuck...I wish that chicken could know he made the world just a bit happier by bringing a smile to at least a few people's faces.

RIP in you silly chicken.

BBB stood for Buck Buck Buck which was his common greeting. BBB was a rooster. A much loved rooster.

This is an old thread so it is not surprising that new members are feeling a bit out of the loop.
