People forget but it takes a certain type of individual to illegally enter the country multiple times without compunction. Many illegal border crossers are aggressive by nature or they would not have made the trip.

The second officer was killed one block from my daughter`s new home. She and her landlady sat for 5 hours on the sofa,in front of the TV,holding a loaded gun. Her landlady`s daughter, who my daughter went all through school with, lives on the block where the second killing took place. Thankfully, her children were in school at the time and she and her husband were at work. My daughter says it was very surreal to be sitting in her own house with a loaded gun, having the police helicopters flying over and the SWAT vehicles driving back and forth in front of the house.

Seems that illegal entry into he US is something more than just a misdemeaner. Maybe the first time but the second time it should get something much more sever, like a jail term and records marking his unwanted position and definite hard charges ahead.

After decades of simply not addressing the illegal immigration problem, I think that it's safe to say that the Federal Government(both Repub. & Demo) have no interest in actually stopping the flow of cheap labor into the U.S.

I think tnthomas above is correct, and, at the risk of sounding like a hard*ss about it, why are we spending so much money caring for those thousands of illegal immigrant children when so many children in our own country have substandard shelter and too little food?? While I sympathize with the plight of children in impoverished other countries, I much more sympathize with children right here in similar circumstances. Shouldn't any country (or family, for that matter) take care of its own citizens first?

When I was just a young person, we had these annual worker invasions where they came, worked on the seasonal jobs, mostly on farms, then went back to Mexico for a few months till next years jobs were available. That could have continued but was stopped for some reason. Now they just sneak over, sit on their butts, often create slums, work if available, but mostly take advantage of our schools and medical systems for free educations and health care. That is pretty good I guess, the way much of our government responds. Inadequate border controls, no stopping at the border and refusing entrance. We accept them through and then have welfare problems taking care of them. Really does not make sense at all. Stop the intruders and force them to use our regular immigrant system like we do all others.

As long as the illegals vote for their party, why should those in Congress care?

It is not only that it is cheap labor it is that Americans won't do the jobs...

We are on our second or third generation of telling our kids the MUST go to college. The kids sit in front of their video games, head off to college, get a degree, expecting to sit in a cubicle making $40,000/year. We've lost our trades. I work with a number of contractors and they simply cannot find help. You can't find a young person who can cut blue tops with a motor grader. The younger generation can't cut grade with a dozer or put pipe together. Heck! Most youngsters today can't even change a flat tire!!!! So...

The manual labor jobs are being taken over by the immigrants from Mexico. Concrete finishers, pipe layers, carpenters, roofers, block masons.... I'm too old to learn to speak Spanish, but that's what most of my contractors speak. These workers earn good money for hard work... hard work that few of our own kids will do.

As I've stated before, not one of our three children went to college out of high school. One did attain her degree through night school AFTER she was married. One has been employed by a University's alumni association for 18 years and in a managemente position. One is a corporate executive, serving as Director of Risk Management and Contract Administration for a firm employing over 2,000 people. The third is a highly decorated NCO in the Army, currently assigned to a Special Forces Group. All three are still in their first marriage. But, these kids were raised with a work ethic that has allowed them to do well in competitive work environments.

We MUST get back to instilling work ethic in our youth and exciting more of them about careers in industry and construction. If not, we will continue to see opportunites shrink as more and more excellent career paths are taken by immigrants... simply because we are too lazy to pursue them.

I'm so glad they're safe Mrs. R., and thank god they had a gun, in case. That's what I would do, I'm not going out to help the police do their job, but some nut breaks in my house, I'd like to be prepared. People don't think this will ever happen to them. If they feel safer without having a gun, they don't have to have one. denise

Don't the government leaders realize that if the "people" go under in this country, they'll be without a job?

I think a lot of young people are "led" into college (how many dropouts, and how many don't pursue the job their degree could get them). I know I get a lot of ideas from movies, but it's like the guy that wanted to build things with his hands, and his parents all but shunned him because he wouldn't become a doctor.

Yes, it certainly should, which only goes to show how far from balance the U.S. has become ...

We talk about this a lot Butterfly, and I agree 100% with you and Phil, as well as others on this forum. We can't give away what we don't have to give. Then by those that call us greedy or selfish, well, to put it nicely, they're just wrong.

An entire additional discussion could be had re the debt college grads have when entering the workplace. My wife has a young man in her office who is ready to enter pharmacy school. $31,000/year for 4 years. He'll owe over $100,000 upon graduation from college. That field, pharmacist, should be a growing field as more of us enter the "golden years". Still, trying to come up with $5,000 to $10,000/year to pay back college loans can take a huge chunk out of one's earnings. So many fields have little opportunity for employment. The kids that come out of school owing in the six figures and have a degree in the arts, etc. may not be able to find work at all. Yet, they will still owe the money.
Kids should graduate high school and be required to enter the work environment for 5 years before going to college. Many would already have secure careers and never need to accumulate huge debt. Others would find fields they have a desire to become educated in and would be much more likely to find gainful employment in that field upon graduation.

I also think it's sad more kids won't be taught that "big" money doesn't bring happiness. I'd like to think if I was blessed with a son or daughter, I would have told them to give a shot at what they love, not what they think is the biggest money to be made. It's like that saying "I want my kids to have everything I never had". Possessions, the American Dream. Seems the American Dream is nothing but credit cards and massive debt.
