Can you still eat anything you want?

One of the "joys" about being a senior is dietary restrictions. I can remember eating a whole store bought " iced flat cake" and washing it down with a beer for breakfast. Those days are way gone. Now I get to chow down on to only 140 grams of carbs. No added salt. And about 1,800 calories. Of course, no "binding foods".
Are you on any dietary restrictions or can you still eat anything you want?

I'm not on any medical diet restrictions, but my teeth have their own set of restrictions - no jaw breakers, no red hots, no whole pickles (I can get away with a spear sometimes, and couple slices on a burger), no pineapple (I ignore that then regret it).

I can but I shouldn’t. 😉🤭😂

No concentrated sweets, no added sugar, low carb, portion control, etc… due to diabetes.

I definitely have room for improvement.

I envy the old timers from my youth that were content with little more than tea and toast.

I can still eat anything I want. However, over the past 3 or 4 years, I have lost about 10lbs, and no matter how much I eat, or how many "sweets" I consume, I can't seem to regain that weight. This all started when I had some heart palpitations, and was prescribed a drug called Coreg. One of it's side effects is weight gain, but I started losing weight. After a few weeks, I no longer had the heart issues, and I eventually quit taking the drug, but I still can't gain weight.

My taste buds have changed. Many things that I previously liked, I no longer do now.
I also have difficulty chewing certain things like meats, raw carrots, or celery. I do not digest greasy food, fried food, spicy food well either. I do not have dietary restrictions for my health.
These days I enjoy a very simple cuisine. (Preferably homemade) I no longer enjoy eating out, something I use to love to do.

No doctor-ordered restrictions. I don't eat certain things that I know I shouldn't. Like, we very rarely eat fast food - I can't remember the last time - but it tastes like crap anyway....these days.

I eat things I probably shouldn't, though....occasionally. But my blood work looks good, I get a passing grade on all my physical exams, and my BMI is perfect, so I don't worry about it.

I'm too skinny, though, and I'm gradually getting skinnier. That bothers me a lot, so I make sure I eat something high-protein everyday, and I don't feel guilty for eating a candy bar or 2 once in a while.

I've never been able to eat much of anything I like due to a hereditary condition. In fact, all my life, every time I've eaten anything with any amount of flavor (especially an acidy flavor), in addition to the gastric distress, I get a stinging sensation in both cheeks right in front of each ear.

I eat anything I like to eat, including too much chocolate. However, my diet consists mostly of home cooked meats, chicken, fish, whole grain breads, butter, milk and fresh fruit and vegetables. These are the things I like best, along with vanilla icecream, portuguese tarts, greek almond cookies and apple turnovers. I drink lots of instant coffee and make my own honey sweetened malted milkshakes.

I've developed allergies to certain kinds of nuts, like walnuts and pecans. It's not a bad allergy where I can't breathe; I just get these weird things on my skin that look and feel like mosquito bites. And it's only if I eat a lot of nuts for several days in a row. I can still eat pecan pie without any problem, so thank god for that. :)

I can't eat anything with high acidity... because I have GI issues... however ...I had this same problem as you when eating acidic food.. even bacon and it was very painful in front of my left ear, when I did eat.. and then suddenly when I ate anything acidy my whole side of my neck and lower cheek under under my ear and at the front of my ear would swell like I had mumps. This all started happening in Spain and trying get someone to diagnose what was happening, and trying to understand what was being said at the time, was very difficult.

Cut a long story short, I got diagnosed in the UK with stones in the salivary gland... ( sialolithiasis, ).. and I had to undergo a procedure called a sialendoscopy.. it was fairly horrendous, because apparently my glands are very tiny and hard to get to .. and so they have to do it while I was awake so I could follow instruction.. .. .. a 45 minute procedure.

That was about 10 years ago.. the specialist said that its very rare to have it on both sides.. but I'm starting to get it again now on the opposite side.

No doctor imposed restrictions. I don't touch fast food or anything with a high salt content. I don't eat much sugary food and have no table sugar in my house for myself, it's just for guests. I cannot eat pepperoni pizza anymore. I do miss that. I can eat meats of all kinds and veggies of all kinds. I have a tiny piece of sharp cheddar after lunch and supper to balance the acids in m my mouth. I'm good with nuts and seeds and I love tea but avoid coffee because it makes my hyper.

That's all. Not bad for my age. :giggle:

I have no diet restrictions. Probably not what most would enjoy since I'm not up at midnight anymore I haven't eaten left over pizza & a soda. Won't rule that out for breakfast if we have left over pizza. Weight never varies more than 2 lb. either way. 2lb. gain most often from pigging out at a buffet.

I can still eat lots of things that I used to be able to before, but since learning that I am prediabetic, I have cut down drastically on refined sugar. I started using Allulose, a sweetener that doesn't affect blood sugar levels; mostly in coffee, tea and cereal. It's not so good in baking. I eat plenty of protein since I learned that seniors need to keep decent levels of protein in their diet to prevent muscle atrophy. I use ghee and coconut oil, no bad fats and avoid white flour.

If I want it, I eat it. So far, knock on wood, I haven’t had any negative reactions. I am fussy about mainly eating healthy food and desserts, every day, are tiny slivers of whatever it is. I have gained weight, so I’m comfortably cozy.

I can still eat "anything I want", but what I "want" has changed. I've become a very functional eater. I tailor my diet for nutritional balance and, of course, stay away from greasy fried foods, added sugars, and additives to the extent feasible. Certainly there are foods that I enjoy, but for the most part just I'm targeting numbers. My weight is perfect and stable. I don't take Rx meds and the only supplement I take is a daily multivitamin.

Eating used to be something of a recreational pastime for me but no longer. I don't miss that a bit. :)

I'm careful about what I eat and have a relatively healthy diet. I'm an unabashed carnivore but also eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. I don't eat fast food per se, but occasionally enjoy takeout Chinese or Mex when I don't feel like cooking. I also enjoy desserts, but in moderation. I'll have a piece or two of dark chocolate, something homemade, or a scoop of ice cream.

I might add that I also take digestive enzymes after meals. That's just helpful in general, especially now that I'm older.

I don't have any restrictions on what I can eat, but I need to drop at least 20 lbs. Growing up, I could eat as much as I wanted of whatever I wanted and never put on an ounce. That stopped around the time my 30s began.

I try hard to eat healthy, natural foods, and lots of fruit and veggies, and to avoid processed foods and excess sugar. I'm not always successful, but I'm getting better. Once in awhile—maybe twice a year—when I get a craving for fat and sodium I splurge and get a McDonald's meal.

I do tend to get heartburn now that I'm older and heavier, so I try to avoid anything overly acidic.

Yes I can eat anything I want within reason , many years ago I had 2 teaspoons of sugar in my tea ….cut that out 20+ years ago …I cant eat as much now days so I use a entree size plate for my meals , sometimes I use a bread & butter plate if I’m not all that hungry .

I only ever eat 2 light meals a day and if I have lunch in preference to an evening meal as we did yesterday , I’ll usually have a small serve of plain unflavoured yoghurt with fruit as a snack in the evening

I recently had a doctor ask me if I ate much salt after I’d had a blood test …..and no I don’t because of the never ending belief salt causes / effects BP .

and altho I get like you and have a craving for salt from time to time , I usually ignore it ….however my doctor advised me to eat MORE salt …...thats one for the books ..it’s normally ….don‘t add salt

He said my salt levels were dangerously low …TBH didn’t know there was such a thing to have low salt levels
