Canada's response to to homegrown attacks targeting Muslims after Paris horror..

Since Paris attacks, there have been some unexpectedly severe and violent attacks targeting Muslims in Canada. In a suspected hate crime a mosque was set on fire in Peterborough Ont. A Muslim woman was

attacked and beaten close to a Toronto school. A Montreal man has been arrested for posting a video wearing a joker mask, and vowing to kill an Arab per week. Horrible stuff, but Canada is fighting back. Along with outpourings of Islamophobia, we have joined together to stem the tide of hatred. Here are some examples.

1. Raising money. Crowd funding by locals, raised in excess of $110,000 in five days to pay for the $80,000
Needed to pay for damages to Peterborough mosque.

2 Muslims and non Muslims marched together in Toronto on Friday calling for peace.

3 Tweeting. After two Muslim women were attacked on earlier this week, dozens of Toronto transit riders
Are offering to accompany Muslim passengers by using hashtag # I'll ride with you.

Other positive steps are being taken also. These are the highlights. Right now, I am proud to be a Canadian.

I have no doubt that there are many people in the USA who would stand up and object to mosque and Muslim attacks... It's doubtful everyone would stand back and applaud it Shali... There ARE good people in the States..... But I see there are Bozos north of our border too.. It the human condition.

QS, my intent was not to suggest that Canadians are in any way superior to Americans, or that American citizens would not

stand up against Islamophobic attacks. . I was just touched at the positive response to the violent acts perpetuated by our homegrown bozos.

I know... Sorry to imply that you felt that... and yes... thanks for pointing out some good... I'm just getting so weary of the US looking like a bunch of buffoons on this topic.. It's embarrassing. Unfortunately it's the LOUDEST of the voices getting all the attention. We are not all running around like Chicken Little.

Thanks QS. I can understand how you feel. During the years Harper was Prime Minister, many Canadians flinched at his antimuslim rhetoric, and implementation of questionable laws.

QS, in every country there are good and bad people. Pointing out the stinkers in no way dishonours the good folks but simply shines 'light' so that the majority can see how NOT to behave or think. But I also agree with Shalimar that we need to highlight the good far more what ever the story. An example would be if our media were to spend more time highlighting the successes of First Nations, Innuit and Metis people instead of only looking at the suicides and drug use among the young. Our country is often left with the notion that all of our original people are losers and too often haven't a clue about the folks that have succeeded despite the deck being stacked against them.

Same goes now for the refugees that will be coming in. I'm pretty sure there must be some of those folks already here that have found jobs and are beginning to make lives for themselves and their families and our media needs to be talking to them regularly and telling all the 'fearful' among us about what a blessing they've been to their new country.

What's unfortunate is that our Media likes to point out only the most extreme and the nastiest of rhetoric.. Of course this being a Presidential Cycle the candidates are vying for the Base... and trying to out "extreme" one another to become the darling. Trump is using it to secure his lead in the Primary... and THIS is how Americans are being portrayed here and abroad.. If this were the General election season... there would be a balance. Right now we all look like xenophobic fools.

And here's something too. Like Shalimar said, our previous government overwhelmingly tried to introduce a level of fear and anger towards Muslims but we're lucky enough to have a new government who doesn't have the same attitude and in time, your country could too.

Remember that Congresswoman I mentioned, Tulsi Gabbard? Well she's just introduced a bill that would kill the 'illegal war' against Assad with a view to leaving him where he is. Imagine if that had been the attitude in Libya for example? No ISIS in Libya while Gaddafi was there and no ISIS in Iraq while Hussein was there. She's seeing the light and she's fighting against the darkness of war in your government. Then this week Bill Maher had Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom of California on, and listening to his plans for California and for Syrian refugees in that state was wonderful! I was so impressed with everything he said regarding compassion, refugees and the environment! I said to my husband, 'it's like politicians are beginning to have some kind of group epiphany that humanity has to grow up and get serious about working out this life TOGETHER'!

So there's hope even though it looks like the whole world is going to hell in a hand basket. We citizens just have to keep our focus and not let the fear mongers/war mongers goad us into joining with them in their violence against the innocents.

Our President is trying to be heard above the fray... but so far the loudest meanest comments get all the media attention.

Today Obama said this about Isis and Muslims. And I sure hope we do not start those hateful attacks similar to what I just read about in Canada. The US did not have to declare war on Isis as they have declared war on the US directly. We just need to keep up our defenses and protect the people as best we can.

[h=1]Obama: War against IS isn't war against Islam[/h]By Rozanna Latiff | New Straits Times – 5 hours ago

KUALA LUMPUR: United States President Barack Obama today called on the world to reject the Islamic State’s (IS) message that the US was at war against Islam, amid a growing debate over terrorism and the global refugee crisis.

Obama said the US could never be against a single religion as it was made up of people from multiple religions, and warned against attempts to paint all Muslims with the same brush.

“We are strengthened by people from every religion, including Muslim-Americans.

“I want to stress on this - prejudice and discrimination helps IS and undermines our national security,” he told reporters while wrapping up his three-day visit here to attend the 27th Asean Summit.

Obama said while the US would continue to lead a coalition of 65 countries in the fight against IS, it should not give in to the terrorists plan to create fear and hatred against Muslims.

“There’s a difference between being vigilant - having smart applications of law enforcement and military intelligence - and succumbing to the kind of fear that leads us to abandon our values, how we live or how we treat each other.”

Obama was speaking amid criticism in the US against his administration for advocating the acceptance of Muslim refugees from Syria and Iraq.

...nice post, Debby.

Of course another thought just occurred to me.. One has to wonder how much of this "Muslim" stuff people actually believe or agree to... OR is it's simply because they are going to be against ANYTHING President Obama believes... I wonder if some of that isn't part of it.

Trying to Reason with the Unreasonable

I'm terrified of Muslims. I don't want sharia law in America.

OK. Let's avoid that by separating church and state.

Nope. I believe in Jesus and want this country to be more Christian.

OK. Here are some refugees who need help.

Nope. Not helping refugees while we still have homeless kids and veterans here.

OK. Here's a bill to help vets.

Nope. I don't want to raise taxes.

OK. What about homeless kids? Surely they deserve some help.

Nope. Their parents are just lazy and want handouts. They shouldn't have had kids if they can't afford kids.

OK. Let's fund Planned Parenthood to help people plan their parenthood.

Nope. Some of that money might go for an abortion, and I'm Pro Life.

OK. Let's give everyone easier access to health care to improve and extend their lives.

Nope. That's socialism. I believe in the Constitution.

OK. I especially like the way the Constitution gives everyone freedom of (and from) religion.

Yes! Freedom of religion. Except Muslims. I'm terrified of Muslims.

I think an attempt by any religious group not only to force feed their particular denomination on the population at large, but to undermine the effects of secular law, is a recipe for disaster.

That is why our Constitution has kept religion from being power in our government. We also protect them as individuals get protected. The religions are not to be mistreated as long as they abide by the Constitution. My words, not the Constitutions words saying the same.

It is indeed a sad, sad world when we still think 1 term, 1 religion, 1 government, 1 belief or whatever it may be, means "everyone" of similar et al. Seems we really have not progressed when we think of tolerance, and acceptance.

Our PM is a breath of fresh air after the last one. He made a speech yesterday in response to the Paris attacks.
He didn't call a press conference in front of a ridiculous number of Australian flags.
He simply stood up in the parliament and calmly said his piece.

In his first national security statement as Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull has declared Islamic State is weak and has "many more smartphones than guns, many more Twitter accounts than soldiers".

"We must not be fooled by its hype. Its ideology is archaic but its use of the internet is very modern," he said on Tuesday.

Mr Turnbull also stressed the need for measured responses to the coordinated attacks in Paris, which left 129 people dead.

"This is not a time for gestures or machismo," he said. "Calm, clinical, professional, effective — that's how we defeat this menace."
Mr Turnbull repeated his rejection of calls from within his party for Australian troops to fight on the ground in Syria.

"I have to report to the House that the consensus of the leaders I met at the G20, at APEC and at the East Asia Summit, is that there is no support currently for a large US-led Western army to attempt to conquer and hold ISIL-controlled areas," he said.

"There are currently no plans for a significant change in the level or the nature of Australia's military commitment in Iraq and Syria.

"No such change has been sought by our allies — if one were we would of course carefully consider it. Current advice to the Government is that the unilateral deployment of Australian combat troops on the ground in Iraq or Syria is neither feasible or practical."

Mr Turnbull also announced the Government would move to a new terrorism alert system.

"I can inform the House that the National Threat Assessment Centre, or NTAC, that sits within ASIO will this week transition to the new National Terrorism Threat Advisory System," he said. "The new system will provide the public with more information on the nature of the threat we are facing.

"The adoption of a five-tiered threat system will also provide ASIO with greater flexibility in determining threat levels, reflecting the need to adapt to an evolving security environment."

After Mr Turnbull's speech, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten pledged to continue to work in a bipartisan fashion with the Government.
"We worked with Mr Abbott and we will do so again with Mr Turnbull," he told Parliament.

Like the Prime Minister, Mr Shorten called for a careful approach to dealing with terrorism.

"Words and ideas, hearts and minds are at the core of winning the struggle against terrorism," he said.
Mr Shorten is also against the idea of deploying combat troops to the region.

"We do not want to perpetuate another cycle as occurred following the invasion of 2003," he said. "A large-scale troop movement, civil unrest and ongoing violence, escalation, withdrawal and eventual return. We can and we must provide Iraqi armed forces with the skills and trainings to repel and overcome Daesh, to focus on building their own capacity to train themselves and to protect themselves.

"We understand the very real risk of a protracted ground war, involving Australian personnel in danger with limited potential for it to contribute to the long-term solution we should be seeing. In the short term, an escalated presence of western troops will only feed the propaganda of Daesh."
