Capital letters are now 'officially racist'

My hair is as white as yours, Timoc. You are never too old to learn something new.

PS Did you notice that I capitalised your username? I also spelled capitalised with an 's' instead of a 'z'. We are not so very different when it comes to the Queen's English.

I have never heard of something more ridiculous.
Seriously, are you kidding me?

Sky News host James Morrow says capital letters are now "officially racist". It comes as a university academic in Canada is pushing to desist the use of capital letters except to "acknowledge the Indigenous struggle for recognition". "They get rid of capital letters except for the capital 'I' in Indigenous because it's some whole thing about capital letters representing hierarchies of white people and racism and stuff like that," Mr Morrow said.

Full Story.
The report sounds sketchy to me, appears designed to spark widespread outrage(thanks to the internet you can cry "fire" in a crowded movie theater and get away with it). Sky News huh? Another Rupert Murdoch creation.

One professor says something...then all of a sudden it grows into "THEY are trying to control our minds".

P-L-E-E-Z-E! :p

It is often the culture and behavior which people object to, not the color of their skin.

Take two examples:
If the 1st man moved in next door, I'd almost certainly leave. Racist, right ?
If the 2nd man move in next door , I'd be one of the 1st to welcome him to the neighborhood.
Yet both of them are Latino. Be careful what you label as racist.View attachment 182174View attachment 182175

Edward J. is quite an actor. Miami Vice aside I always thought that he and Philip Michael Thomas couldn't stand the sight of each other. Come to discover that he literally despised Don Johnson because everybody catered to him and adored his rather flighty yet serious demeanor on and off the set. I still liked EJO in both Bladerunner movies.

Guy #1 kind of looks Latino, except for the SWASTIKAs tattooed on his face. I don't know, maybe he was trying to fit in with the white boys while he was in prison. Probably belongs to the Nazi Lowriders.
Guy #2 is Edward James Olmos, one of my favorite actors from back in the day.

I'm used to being around felons(worked in jails and prison) but guys that tattoo their faces like that are way too distanced from society to be comfortable around.
Edward James Olmos would be a pleasure to have a beer and BBQ with.

Writing in such a way that it's difficult or annoying to read and understand is folly in today's world of "I soooo can't be bothered with this nonsense." CLICK

If I'd have come across Manyguns' statement in another context I'd have read a few sentences, dismissed her, and moved on. Strangers hoping for my attention need to communicate clearly. I find nothing charming, admirable or helpful about changing the rules of written language to suit one's own vanity, even when the larger cause is noble.

Many, many people skip over walls of text that lack paragraph breaks, contain the affectations of excessive stylizing (lack of capitals would qualify here), myriad spelling errors, add links without context or explanation, or cite "facts" without source documentation to back them up.

What @StarSong said. I quite agree.

But this is another TV talking head "analysts" show designed to evoke a response. It's a great ratings booster. It's also a waste of time and effort.
The electronic age is rapidly returning humanity back to the time of the Tower of Babel. There is no escape from the madness, except possibly for the planet-killer asteroid lurking just past the orbit of Jupiter.

I dunno, Chef. Which one is most likely to bring in my wheelie bin or to mow my front lawn without me asking? Hard to tell just by looking at the face.

What made a bad impression to me about the top guy was the swastika on his chin (if he knows what it represents)
What made a bad impression to me about the bottom guy was the meanness in his eyes and his mouth.

What exactly do indigenous Americans want (other than the capital letters thing)? I may be mistaken, but they seem to want a return to an environment similar to what existed 100s of years ago and to be able to thrive artificially in the high-tech world that exists today.

On Native American reservations, women are murdered at a rate ten times the national average. Violent crime rates overall are 2.5 times the national average while some individual reservations reach 20 times the national average.

Is it because they feel victimized that they're so violent? Perhaps they need to get their own house in order before demanding silly crap like eliminating capital letters.

This thread pertained to First Nation peoples of Canada. Not certain why you brought up Native Americans, of

whom you seem to have a very negative perception.

I've read a lot about Native Americans. Ironically, some Native Americans are happy to be called Indians. What they often suggest is that you ask them what they want to be called, which sounds sensible to me.

The contrast between U.S. and Canadian treatment of tribes is stark. Basically, the U.S. broke its treaties, repeatedly, and the Canadian government didn't. The U.S. then felt free to wage war, move people off their lands, and hunt down "renegades" who wouldn't live on the totally inadequate reservations provided for them. It's one of the great stains of U.S. history, and we see its repercussions today.

I'm sorry to hear that First Peoples in Canada haven't been treated as well as I thought they were. The silly debate about capitalization aside, it's important for the governments of both countries to do what they can to right past wrongs.

The guy on the bottom photo is Edward James Olmos. A truly fine actor. Co-star of "The Shawshank Redemption" and many other great films. I see no meanness in his eyes or mouth.

Dr Linda Manyguns, a Canadian Indigenous academic at a Calgary University obviously has feelings of outrage over the treatment of First Nations people in this country. She has cause. For example. The unfolding Residential horror story of who

knows how many unknown children in hidden graves on the grounds of former residential schools is a mark of shame we will carry for a long time to come. Yes, the Catholic church has much to answer for, but there is plenty of blame to go around. Racism is real in my beloved country, we must acknowledge that, listen to our Indigenous brothers and

sisters, and find a way to move forward in reconciliation. I doubt Dr. Manyguns will succeed in her quest, but I fully acknowledge the oppression past and present suffered by Canadian First Peoples There are many examples I have not listed here. I doubt very much Mr. Morrow would feel any empathy for Canadian Aboriginals. I have read some of his stuff. His values seem incompatible with their goals, and those of their Canadian allies.
I am so sorry that your natives have such an awful history, and that so many young children have been killed.
Perhaps we can all learn from giving too much power to religion.

Yes, some people do speak in gibberish and they do get attention. Negative attention, that is.
They are not hired for any job where they come into contact with the public. Their jobs usually include the use of brooms, mops and shovels.
