Captain Kirk meets the Final Frontier

I'm so glad for him, I learned about it yesterday from the young people at work talking about it. We came to the conclusion that none of us were old enough to remember seeing the original broadcasts of Star Trek, tho one person thinks she probably saw them but was too young. We all remember seeing them as re-runs.

We definitely watched the original shows.. Here in the UK Star trek was first aired on BBC in July'69 , I was 14...and during the 70's it was one of the BBC biggest ratings shows...

I think it was great PR to have Shatner to be be on the flight. And, yeah, the only thing slightly smaller than the Universe is Shatner's ego. But somehow Capt. Kirk back in space was cool. Yet, the flight lasted only a few moments in what is considered "space". That's more like an amusement park type ride. For that kind of cash, I would want at least one orbit around the planet. On the other hand, space travel is now a tourist attraction, it's no longer a death defying feat.

Doesn't this sort of diminish some of that "right-stuff" mystique ?

I mean yes I realize it wasn't a full-on space flight, orbiting and all ........ but still, a 90 yr/old man passed muster to go ?
