There was a story in Vanity Fair a few months ago. Such a very sad story. That basically they're trying to carry on. But the survivors live every day knowing they could easily be targeted again. In America that would be like Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert when they still were doing their original shows, or The Onion. Being murdered over cartoons and satire...there just aren't words.
 

I have some mixed feelings on this whole thing. Now don't get me wrong.. I am appalled these people were murdered for free speech.. BUT.. they knew.. and we ALL know that the Prophet Mohammed is pretty much off limits for ridicule .. and that it is the highest blasphemy to portray him in a cartoon.. Yet they did.. over and over and over. Sometimes when you know you are in a pen with a bull.. you simply do not wave a red cape.. kwim?
 
When the Christian religion has been blasphemed over the years, which has been quite often,I can't remember any murders or bombings being committed because of it. Muslims need to get over themselves.

I agree... It's a completely different culture.. It doesn't make it right... I'm saying that when you KNOW something is that upsetting to a group.. and they seem to have no qualms about blowing you away.. to you tempt fate? Do you continue doing what you know may get you killed because you have the right?
 
I know what you're saying but that's the whole point of freedom of speech. In countries like Russia or China any hint of disagreement with authority and you might just disappear one day. But we can publish political cartoons portraying public figures as the buffoons they are. Any writer who steps out there wants that freedom.

I agree with this too.. and therein lies my mixed feelings..
 
If you're a writer or cartoonist worth his/her salt you don't back off just because someone gets upset at you.

ESPECIALLY someone from another country / religious system / faith / etc. What right do they have to kill anyone outside of their "faith"? Because their Good Book or Messiah tells them to?

Just as with North Korea, when you start tip-toeing around you show that you're weak. You might as well just roll up and die while you're at it.

This is the Vanity Fair article. I don't remember if it's here or in something else I read. Another detail that almost had me in tears was about a dog. The artist Cabu had a pup he would bring to work. After the murders the survivors were walking through the carnage and here was this poor little dog trying to wake his owner. You don't know how you could live with yourself after witnessing such a thing, like being at war.
