Check in for Safety for Those of You in Cities Under Protest and Violence

I live 2 1/2 blocks away from the street the protesters in San Jose walked up and down during their protest. We first noticed that something was up when one, then two news helicopters started flying around our house. We turned on the stations and watched the protesters walk past the streets on either side of us that go to the main street they were on. More than half of the protesters clearly had masks on and were marching respectfully and peacefully down towards the freeway. If we had signs that were relevant to the protest we would have joined them if it weren't for Covid-19.

When they got to the freeway they shut down the freeway and damaged some cars. The police and highway patrol eventually cleared them from the freeway and they started to once again march back passed our area towards city hall. We started to hear sirens and then more and more sirens and turned on the new channels again. A small number of the crowd were not as peaceful as they had been going to the freeway. Some of them damaged property (including a police car) and others started throwing things at the police. One person punched a police officer, knocked him down and was quickly arrested. They vandalized city hall by spray painting on it.

I am fully supportive of the peaceful protesters. I am fully supportive of our mayor and police department who did not intervene until there was property damage and/or violence. I do not support the people who blocked the freeway. I do not support anyone who harassed other people. I do not support the people who were violent towards other people. I do not support the people who damaged property.

The helicopters were around the area for a few hours and the sirens were on and off into the evening and the night.

I never felt scared and threatened. I did feel cautious and made sure our doors were locked. We had been thinking of going on a bicycle ride before the protest started and decided not to do it. We usually cross that street to get to a nice place to bicycle and didn't want to risk having difficulty getting through the protesters or back.

I think the worst of it for us was the droning of the helicopters that lasted as long as it did.
I fully support the peaceful protesters, too, but not the jerks setting fires, looting, breaking everything, doing senseless acts of violence and realize the violent ones are not the ones with a worthy cause but a selfish desire to do harm.

In my opinion, that poor man was murdered. Those policemen need to be behind bars, But burning and looting a Target is also wrong and those people should also be behind bars. Just like Ferguson, it only hurts the community as a whole and does nothing to bring any meaningful change.
Yes, it's a terrible thing that man died. And you are right--the burning and violence only hurts a community and won't bring any meaningful change but only more problems for many.

Asp3, thanks for sharing that with us. My daughter and granddaughter live in San Jose, and I've been worried about them. I just texted to ask if their part of the city was affected by the violence, and she said no, they were all right.

I'm glad you didn't go on that bike ride. Probably not a chance worth taking.

A lot of these rioters, not protestors, are professional anarchists and far left extremist groups like ANTIFA that are to blame for many of these riots. The majority of blacks only want to march and protest, but when these leftist groups join in, they know how to manipulate the others into doing as they are doing; rioting, looting, burning, etc.

During President Obama’s first term in office, we (the Pennsylvania State Police, or PSP) was alerted to be on the lookout for certain radical groups traveling from New York City to Washington. Their goal was to shoot at the President. It was their hope that it didn’t matter if they hit him or not. Just the fact that they were able to take a shot at him and escape would be enough to start a riot. That’s how insane these people are.

I will also tell you that a PSP sting team did make a stop on a car traveling from NYC on its way to Washington and they found a cache of weapons located inside the wheel well where the spare tire would normally sit. Inside the car was 1 black man, 2 white men and 1 white woman. Since the sting team could not prove their intent, they were only charged with weapons violations.

Exactly. If you'll look at pics closely, you'll see a lot of white people rioting violently in the crowds. One pic I saw showed a masked white guy breaking windows of stores to let looters in. Several black friends on another forum reported rioters in their area of Atlanta who didn't know the city at all. They were asking residents where to go for the protests.

There are people in this world who want a polarized, divided America and they're willing to pay protestors to further that agenda.

In Cleveland, a very large and diverse group gathered by the sculpture, "Free" stamp. They listened to speakers. They marched with signs. None of these people then ran off to burn anything down or do a smash and grab. But, others did.

Back in the day, protesters would build bonfires and burn effigies. That was a far less destructive and yet a symbolic and therapeutic act.

The burners and looters just promote distrust and fear among people. That accomplishes nothing positive. The only thing it will change is the amount of enforcement and the increased likelihood of more brutality. Shameful. Selfish. Counter-productive. Dumb.

Thousands of Montrealers protest police brutality , racism after the killing of George Floyd.

In Canada, people in cities like Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax have taken to the streets to call for an end to police brutality, justice for black lives like George Floyd’s and to draw attention to the pervasive, systemic underpinning such tragedies.

These protests have continued peacefully with little to no conflict between protesters and police.

You're welcome. San Jose is a big city, the 10th largest in the country in terms of population. The protest was limited to about 15 to 20 blocks in the downtown area. There may have been some property damage in other areas (we saw some graffiti on a building about three blocks away from the protests today.)

We got out for our bicycle ride today so all was fine in the end.

I felt more safe yesterday as the Mayor of Cleveland shut down the downtown area and roads leading to it along with pulling up the bridges that connect to downtown. There was also an 8 pm to 8 am curfew enacted.

Downtown is very close to me from the shore way Freeway. On Saturday there was a lot of bedlam down there. On Sunday volunteers were cleaning up the damages--shows we have lots of good, helpful people, too! 💗 😌

So, I feel all is being done now to keep the city and neighboring cities safe for everyone.

Do you feel safe in your city now and what has your city done to ensure that? That is what the topic of this thread was originally started for after all.😉🐭💜🌹

My facebook feed has been blowing up with accusations of ANTIFA involvement in many of the cities that have rioted. Nashville's had its share as well.

Yesterday afternoon, I posted that the protest in Binghamton (NY) was peaceful............at night time it changed. It was held at a park that is pretty popular on the west side of Binghamton, Recreation Park. One of the people there set the playground on fire. There was a new area of the playground that built for disabled children and they burned it. Big fire and burned some of the park or maybe all of the park out buildings. For no reason! Someone said it was 4 teenager boys who did that but I can't say for sure because I haven't read about it yet.

Now I find out a "peaceful protest" is planned for June 4th, across the street from my apartment building! I am not happy about this. So no, I don't really feel safe. The reason I mention, Binghamton, is because that is only 40 miles from me and that is where I lived most of my life. Where I live now, Norwich is much smaller and our police department is really small and they have been trying to add more officers to their force for the last two years.

Of course, as things are quieting down, in Austin, the local news media, and I'm sure the major networks, as well, have increased the number of times they show the murder video, to, about, five to ten times an hour.

I am coming to truly hate those behind the operation of our news media. As the CV19 debacle clearly showed, these lowlife, pos folks, thrive on keeping the masses stirred up in order to guarantee wider viewership and the hefty advertising revenue they can generate with the same.

I live close to Minneapolis and I am shocked at the violence because I have visited there quite often. People from my city visit St. Paul and Minneapolis to watch NHL hockey.

I'm not a gun advocate. But if I lived in the U.S. I would have a gun for protection in cases like this.

By the way I love your baseball avatar. I used to pitch in my younger days and it makes me want to grab it.
I'd have a gun (just because), if I lived in the USofA, and I'd have it on me at all times.

have pulled up info on Antifa...
Information appears garbled (I think this was by intent and may be functioning as a code.)
I'm not a conspiracy nut, but these groups have always been with us.
I would hazard a guess that the news stations have sanctions-do not give these people air time.
These groups are the scary folk, not the rioters.

Last night here in Buffalo on the East side where the majority of African American residents live there was an tense situation.A group of protesters were near a police station, taunting the cops, throwing bricks/water bottles. They were asked to leave they didn't,cops started to arrest some of them
A SUV plowed into the police line injuring a cop&state trooper,2 people in the SUV were shot, all were taken to local hosptial
Our mayor Bryon Brown issued this morning a week long curfew for the city starting tonight at 8pm- 5am thru Sun evening,in hopes the protesting/looting will subside. Its a sad situation
I long to go back to my childhood where it was the 'age of innoncence'

Been watching the news and some of my family are living in cities where these protests are and I have been worried. I called one sibling and talked on the phone to see if the family is okay. They are okay and intently watching what's going on on the tv. My niece is feeling frightened and I tried to tell her it's going to be okay, that the police and national guard will keep everyone safe. I hate to see her frightened like this.

There has been protest and violence, setting fires to police cars, roaming aimlessly up to something in my next door city and very close to where I am. I am doing okay but I was getting very sad and in tears for awhile. I don't know if the lockdown contributed to people going off the deep end now or what. I know there are issues but turning to violence solves nothing and just adds more problems onto the problems already there.

So, how are You and Your Family doing with all of this going on?
I agree 100%...violence doesn't solve ANYTHING...it just adds to the problem.
