Coffee shop etiquette

I don't go to coffee shops like Starbucks, or use any computer devices in public places utilizing their WIFI. I have gone to a local book store that was connected to a coffee shop though, and I was amazed to see so many people there who seemed to be nursing their coffee in order to use the shop for their computer business, whether business related or not. It did cross my mind that the owners must not be happy with those who aren't here to buy things and socialize in the real world. I'd feel funny trying to do something like that myself.
 
Scrounging is not something to be proud of.
It is taking advantage of someone's generosity.
It's also mean, selfish and inconsiderate.

Scroungers are not well regarded where I come from.
Nearly as bad as bludging.

Scrounger : parasite, freeloader, sponger, bum, cadger, bludger

Bludger : lazy person, layabout, somebody who always relies on other people to do things or lend him things
 
That's a big problem the management should be dealing with, how dare they sit their arses on chairs in coffee shops to use their PC's and stopping other people from using the coffee shop, shift them out.

I used to fume when I would walk into a Barnes & Noble or similar "bookstore", only to find people relaxing into a comfy chair with a cup of coffee and a brand-new book THAT WAS FOR SALE. They'd do the same thing with the latest magazines.

I'd like to walk into one of THEIR workplaces, grab a coffee and use whatever is being sold without paying for it.

And people wonder why the publishing business is so screwed up.

I really don't see the appeal of using a computer in a coffee shop either. Maybe when laptops first became a "thing", just to show off, but now it's ridiculous.
 
That's one of my pet hates, people standing in shops reading the new magazines and they won't move for you so you can purchase one, i have been known to throw a comment or two.
Phil i feel these geeks thinks it makes them look intelligent and smart and doing something, when all they are doing is being jerks.

When I first moved to PA there used to be a great bookshop / magazine store in an outdoor mall near my apartment. I would go in every month to pick up my usual magazines and there would be a group of people - always guys - hanging out in front of the racks.

It took a few trips for high-awareness me to see that they were peeking over the tops of the magazines at each other, and it was only then that I noticed they mainly browsed the muscle mags and, for the more bold among them, the occasional issue of Blue Boy. :eek:

I would leave, go back home, have dinner, and try the store again. No luck - they were still as thick as flies and still buzzing around the racks.

I found another store. Too bad - they had a lot, but some of what they had I wasn't interested in.
 
It was a Barnes and Noble bookstore that was hooked up to the Starbucks Phil. I was amazed to that people were allowed to drink their beverages, eat their muffins and read through brand new books without buying them, they probably elephant eared the pages too, when they had to take a break and let that java exit. Honestly, I've never bought a cup of coffee in a Starbucks.

i like coffee shops, any coffee shop with good coffee, because I am SOOO nosy!
i have listened to a job interview, managers meetings, first meetings after Internet dates; I could go on.
who needs free wi-fi when there is so much entertainment all around!

Yeah, that figures that B&N and Starbucks were sleeping together. I don't know what I would have done had I found someone reading one of MY books while sipping their overpriced coffee ...

I just know it wouldn't have been pretty.

Nor have I. But then, I've never eaten at Olive Garden, TGIF or any other trendy place either. I go against the crowd - when they're at McDonald's I'm at the little Mom-and-Pop diner the next street over. When they all flock to Starbucks you can find me drinking the cheapest Dollar Store coffee I can find.

Not that I particularly like the taste, mind you ... I just enjoy being a contrarian. :D

I really think they should. As mentioned in the article, let them go to the library - it's quiet, no beverages allowed, and time limits are usually imposed on the terminals. If you're that in need of a connection you'll find a way to purchase one on your own; that way you can sit at home and slurp your coffee and surf NaughtyNunsNightly.com to your heart's content.
 
I use my iPad 5 minutes when I'm out for breakfast. But never longer.
in Tim Hortons here the Asian people hold seats for hours doing techy stuff.
20 minutes time limit per table should be for all of us to be fair.
