Hello:
The other night, I had a horrible 'constipation' which caused not able to sleep during the night. The pain around a large intestine was unbearable even I felt ER intervention to get it done.
I've been taking one-cup of MiraLAX every day. So, this, an unexpected, compacted waste/feces made me a big surprise.
Is there any, remedy out there except MiraLAX?
I'd truly appreciate for sharing any experience and remedy.

Cal-Mag I get the individual packets from Amazon. I stir a pack in a cup of water - stir and drink. You can also heat it in the microwave if you prefer. I stay away from MiraLAX, etc.. I try to go with natural remedies. Nothing too harsh on the tummy,

I have chronic constipation which leads to diverticulitis.
After getting an infection in those little pockets that the doctor tells you about after a colonoscopy.

I drink lots of water,, have to force myself as I don't feel thirsty.

I use wheat germ on cottage cheese/fruit , drink lemon, ginger tea in evening.

We have our own rhubarb patch.
I've been cutting it up, cooking it with crushed pineapple , adding some sugar.
Cook that down to like a jelly , eat some in the evening.

Things have been working for me.
Looking forward to fresh veggies this Summer.

Everyone may laugh about the rhubarb,, but that was one the first plants my grandfather wanted cooked , the Spring.

My husband suffered badly with constipation and was told to get suppositories. These usually worked within 20 minutes. I think it is better to treat the complaint from the bottom area as when you took things orally it takes sometimes a couple of days to bring relief.

I was recently diagnosed with lymphocytic colitis that was causing diarrhea. I took budesonide until I got so constipated I couldn't go. I pushed so hard I got a hernia (that now needs an operation). What stopped the constipation was MiraLAX, stool softeners, and ducalax pills ( 2 ). I am maintaining a pretty regular time now with one dose of MiraLAX per day. I hope you feel better soon!

Having been born with Irritable Bowel Syndrome-C (Constipation) and my mother and her mother also, I've tried just about everything. I just ordered some licorice root extract (supposed to be better than the candy) but I'm glad it didn't cost much because I'm trying not to get my hopes up; nothing else has worked.

I did see something interesting on the Mayo Clinic site the other day: they think that some people have so much trouble because their bodies just don't process any water they drink correctly, too much of the water goes directly into the bladder. A little of the water is going where it should or they'd be dead but nowhere near enough. So no matter how much water they drink, some people are just going to have intestinal tracts that are too dry and therefore constipation.

What about Ducolax? But I agree with the others - if this has been going on for a day or two WITH pain, go to the urgent care and see if they can recommended anything. It could be a stricture of the colon and/or many other things.

Best thing to do, IMO, is to eat a salad every day. They sell pre-packaged salads at most of the grocery stores and even though they are kind of pricey, IMO, at $3.50 to $5.00 a bag, I think they are some of the best preventative medicine you can eat. Leafy greens are just so good for people.

If you really hate salad, or can't afford them, eat a baked potato every day.

The Ducolax was prescribed over the phone by my Primary just to get things moving again. It worked. I haven't used it since. I don't think relying on it would be wise. It IS a laxative. For those with IBS I have no answers. I too have suffered for years with it and having totally different symptoms at times. It is maddening, until you just give up to being sick have the time. :)

I have heard that , that is good for many things. Has anyone found an olive oil that actually tastes good ? Everyone I have tried, just tastes horrible when taken straight. Fine for cooking, but horrible for drinking.
I agree. We have settled on Bertolli Extra Virgin oil. The taste is milder than most others that we've tried.
Of coarse, everyone's palette is different.

I try to get enough fiber, but it doesn't always help. When all else fails, a Wendy's large chocolate frosty does it for me every time. But of course it's not practical to keep those in the house all the time. So a couple of times a week, I take Senna-S, "a natural vegetable laxative and stool softener", as printed on the bottle. It comes in pill form.
