Do you need to go there?
Nobody can answer that question for you. Only you know that. Good luck whatever you decide.

what is the dark web?
The dark web is a part of the internet that is not accessible through regular search engines and requires specialized software or authorization to access. It is often associated with illegal or illicit activities, such as drug trafficking, weapon sales, and human trafficking, although it can also be used for more innocuous purposes.
The dark web is typically accessed through a special browser called Tor (The Onion Router) that provides anonymity by routing internet traffic through multiple servers around the world. This makes it difficult for authorities to track users' activities and can provide a haven for criminal activity.
It's important to note that while the dark web can be used for illegal purposes, it can also be used for legitimate reasons, such as protecting whistleblowers or allowing journalists to communicate securely. However, due to its association with criminal activity, the dark web can be a dangerous place to navigate, and caution should be exercised when using it.

I use Brave browser. It can open a new window using TOR if I wanted to go there. I have no reason to mess around in that space. It is a hackers paradise I guess.

I never tried to access the dark web. It doesn't seem like a place I would want to be part of with criminal activity, child porn, human trafficking, perhaps even snuff films. I don't want any part of that garbage, too dangerous, too negative. In my opinion, it should not even exist.

Millions of customers' data found on dark web in latest AT&T data breach

MARCH 30, 20245:46 PM ET

AT&T announced on Saturday it is investigating a data breach involving the personal information of more than 70 million current and former customers leaked on the dark web.

According to information about the breach on the company's website, 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former account holders have been impacted. An AT&T press release said the breach occurred about two weeks ago, and that the incident has not yet had a "material impact" on its operations.

AT&T said the information included in the compromised data set varies from person to person. It could include social security numbers, full names, email and mailing addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth, as well as AT&T account numbers and passcodes.

What is it ? Do I need to go there ? And how do I ......... Go there ?
From Tulane School of Professional Advancement:
"Given its anonymous nature, the dark web is also used for illicit and even illegal purposes. These include the buying and selling of illegal drugs, weapons, passwords, and stolen identities, as well as the trading of illegal pornography and other potentially harmful materials."

I've also heard it's where criminals go to put hits on people. It scares me, and I'd not want to personally go there for any reason.

For the curious: #1 don't go unless you are well equipped, using a Linux 'live' session and an anonymous browser. #2 don't visit any sites that engage in criminal activities, or you may find yourself under observation by law enforcement.

The Dark Web is simply an extension of the internet that is encrypted and thus offers both anonymity and secrecy. In simple terms, that's it.

It gains its reputation because those two aspects mean you can do nefarious stuff online with a minimal chance of getting caught. So the Dark Web became chock full of illegal drugs sales, extreme pornography of the worst type, and other nastiness.

Some people use the Dark Web simply because they don't want "the man" from peering over the shoulder all the time, as can happen on the internet proper. Others are involved in the drug trade, or the aforementioned pornographers. I just posted in the Deepfake Porn thread, and this is a perfect example of what I was talking about there - even deleting an image totally on the internet, won't get it on the Dark Web.

Do you need to go there? Well, that's a personal thing. I don't use it myself, though I have looked around in the past. If you're looking for standard types of things, I don't see any benefit whatsoever. If nothing else, performance is hindered by the layers of encryption. Plus, you know, you're essentially entering a garden that is fenced off with great big "THIEVES, CROOKS, AND WORSE" signs posted every three meters around it. If you want to hang out with them.......
