Cops misbehaving in the US

Is this the way you expect to be treated?

There was no violation, and yet cop tries his hardest to get an admission of speeding and following to closely. This driver had a dash cam. I'd bet a dozen doughnuts that driver would have gotten 1 or possibly 2 tickets w/out the dash cam.

It's funny how well behaved people are when they're on camera. I'm thinking about getting some kind of bodycam for that reason.

The cop apologists usually use 1% so it's good to see reality strike and you've upped it to 2 %.

It's the remaining "good" cops that FAIL to eliminate and tolerate the "bad" cops that make them all BAD. There is the rare exception of the truly good cop such as, Keechant Sewell, who was willing to stand up against corruption at ALL levels in the NYPD. She had the respect of the rank and file cop, but was let go when when she tried to stand up to corruption at the highest levels in the department. Of course another failed cop Adams NYPD ret was resposible for making a complete mockery of the NYPD and the city.

The ones who cover for the bad apples are just as bad as the bad apples themselves in my opinion.

To put in in perspective Police Officers barely make it into the top 25 most dangerous jobs at 22nd place.

Top 25 most dangerous jobs in the United States

OK, but maybe we should let them do their job. If a Cop is assaulted by a criminal in the course of that Police officer doing his job and he is forced to fight back, some of us should not be anxious to consider the police officer the villain to be punished.

This is unbelievable, you would think these officers would have a sense of shame and feel embarrassed by what they did to an 87 year old senile woman who could not speak English.

OK, but maybe we should let them do their job.

I don't think any law-abiding American of sound mind has a problem with police officers who do their job. That being said, no real American is going to tolerate police officers who refuse to respect the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens.

Many, many are just in their first moments of realizing that the police can be and are evil. The old, tired phrase "if you didn't do anything wrong you have no reason to fear cops" has been revealed to be wrong thanks to video.

My son-in-law was a San Francisco cop. He patrolled Market Street, and carried with him free vouchers for housing for the homeless. He was always frustrated by his inability to give them away. My Brother In Law was also a cop. He shot only one person in his career, a man who was holding a knife to a woman’s throat. Shot him in the leg and he dropped the knife. He died of old age. Went to his funeral, an auditorium full of people who knew and loved him.

I'm sure you're proud of their contribution and rightfully so. Unfortunately 2 men can't reverse the corruption of police and police forces that have been coddled by the politicians over the last 5,000 years. Serpico tried.

Cop culture has destroyed the "profession" of policing so the cops of today are the recipient of much hate which they don't deserve on a personal level, but their predecessors that covered up and concealed corruption and abused citizens are responsible.

Here in California we currently have a law which reduces punishment for store thefts of merchandise valued at less than $950 to that of a misdemeanor, the equivalent of Jay Walking. Store clerks are afraid to physically confront misdemeanor thieves for fear that they, or their employer, might be sued or prosecuted. Police generally don’t respond to shop lifting calls for much the same reason. Many stores have been forced to close. Sound reasonable to you?

^^^Jaywalking is an infraction w a penalty of $196 and no criminal record, a misdemeanor has a max penalty of $1000 and/or 6 months in jail and a criminal record.

Your information is incorrect and even if it was correct it's still irrelevant and off topic.

On further investigation, you make a good point, but the law is just not Enforced as you and I might wish …

“Why Shoplifting Is Now De Facto Legal In California

Why is shoplifting so rampant? Because state law holds that stealing merchandise worth $950 or less is just a misdemeanor, which means that law enforcement probably won’t bother to investigate, and if they do, prosecutors will let it go.
Why won’t store employees do anything about this theft? Because they don’t want to take the risk. I doubt many would, knowing that a Rite Aid employee was murdered recently after trying to stop two thieves.”

I know you will delight in continuing this discussion, but don‘t bother on my account. I won’t be reading it.

Unfortunately for this thief in California, these Sikh shopkeepers come from a warrior culture and have not yet been emasculated by modern-day American society.

Stealth Edit: FBI Quietly Revises Violent Crime Stats
https://www.realclearinvestigations...etly_revises_violent_crime_stats_1065396.html

When the FBI originally released the “final” crime data for 2022 in September 2023, it reported that the nation’s violent crime rate fell by 2.1%. This quickly became, and remains, a [...] talking point to counter [...] claims of soaring crime.
But the FBI has quietly revised those numbers, releasing new data that shows violent crime increased in 2022 by 4.5%. The new data includes thousands more murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults.
The Bureau [...] made no mention of these revisions in its September 2024 press release.
RCI discovered the change through a cryptic reference on the FBI website that states: “The 2022 violent crime rate has been updated for inclusion in CIUS, 2023.” But there is no mention that the numbers increased. One only sees the change by downloading the FBI’s new crime data and comparing it to the file released last year.
Many cities have not still added their 2022 data I guess deadlines and accountability is not really expected or demanded
i think if we are talking accountability ........we need to discuss this type of issue with data revised on weekend while others use flawed data headlines as a "fact".
Bureaucrats and police perhaps most ALL public servants should perhaps need to be able to be bonded .... like on the job malpractice....that bond pays settlements first.

REFORM is also needed for court system .... Many people sue without a real case but with big PR thing to want city / state etc to settle before going to trial ..... it is often NOT always a money grab....... frivolous suits should have a penalty as well.... maybe for lawyers who convince anyone and everyone to sue sue sue

The ones who cover for the bad apples are just as bad as the bad apples themselves in my opinion.
Should that apply for all professions?

the actors and actresses that knew about Weinstein / Cosby/ Diddy and other demons who preyed on newbies ..... until it makes news then bandwagon jumping starts stating how they suspected or knew or it was a me too moment.

doctors who cover for others errors .....and on and on every profession has some dark side

i have little faith in so many who do not speak up to perhaps prevent things from happening but love to play arm chair quarterback AFTER the fact.
if people have attitude with people ......they often get some push back that would NOT have happened if they just sorted the situation civilly.

Look at police interactions people who refuse to follow directions /clearly openly lie about things / refuse to produce ID even if that is required in many states then want to say how mean cop was ..... how a simple situation escalates.

civility makes everything go smoothly and several situations end with a warning etc.

DA and judge protect this disgusting pos ..............

NYT 10/28/24

"A former Louisiana state trooper who had faced felony charges in the 2019 death of a Black man who was beaten while in police custody pleaded no contest to significantly reduced charges on Monday, allowing him to avoid jail time in a case that drew protests and spurred a federal civil rights investigation.

The trooper, Kory York, 51, had initially faced charges of negligent homicide and 10 counts of malfeasance in office in the death of Ronald Greene, 49, who was beaten while in custody after a high-speed chase on May 10, 2019. In an agreement with prosecutors, Mr. York on Monday pleaded no contest to eight counts of misdemeanor battery in exchange for one year of probation, his lawyer, Mike Small said.

The no-contest plea, Mr. Small said, is not an admission of guilt.

Four other law enforcement officers were also charged in the case, but Mr. York, who retired in August, had faced the most serious charges.

“This was an outstanding result,” Mr. Small said.

Family members of Mr. Greene gathered in a courtroom on Monday in Farmerville, La., as Mr. York’s trial was about to begin. Mr. Small said that Mr. Greene’s mother, Mona Hardin, and another family member spoke in court, asking the judge to not approve the no-contest plea agreement."
