Costco placing purchase limits on toilet paper, other products due to COVID-related demand

Now I live in Tennesee. Did live in Michigan.
From what I've read, they seem to have plenty for now, but anticipate shortages in the future.

I never buy bottled water; just drink it straight from the tap. Far as hoarding crap paper isn't this news from March, 2020? Some people really do need to get a life!

Costco must have implemented a computer limit in their checkout system during last year's shortage. I saw a clerk keep trying in vain to let a customer buy two packs of paper towels but the system wouldn't let her ring up the second regardless of the overrides she tried. I was amused since they both were trying to look so stealthy and were actually drawing attention.

Me neither. I have heard people say they can only drink bottled water. I do fine with tap water and have been taking a stainless steel bottle of tap water to work for years.

I watched this segment this AM on FOX. Great way to get people to panic again and over buy. I hope this doesn't go the way of the grocery stores again. Plus stores were putting on their receipts that they wouldn't take back items overbought due to the pandemic. Some people are probably still eating all that pasta and beans they bought.
 
I'm not even a Costco member, but I buy their Kirkland toilet paper because it's one of the few brands that hasn't been narrowed.
I just have a friend pick up an extra case of it. Last year, she needed one case for herself & that's all they would sell her.
She went out to her car, unloaded everything, then bought a second case for me.
Someone called police. They showed up, but they had nothing to go on. :LOL:
 
Can somebody please explain to me why the big rush on TP you're all talking about? Is another quarantine around the corner that I didn't know about? It's a different ball game now, thanks to the vaccine. People are able to shop. And Amazon sells everything. So why the panic about TP?
 
Going to Costco Business Center this week and will be interested to see what's happening there. I rarely use paper towels, don't buy bottled water, and my TP supply in the bathroom cabinets will last at least a couple of months, so no need for more.

The panic buying of all kinds of items in March 2020 was astonishing. It was like people were preparing for a war. Or a zombie invasion.

Warehouses are running low due to all the shipping problems. I'm sure that is going to cause other shortages and higher prices. 😥

Exactly. Just-in-time inventory levels and global sourcing for almost everything are coming back to haunt us. Another complication is that people are spending more on material goods and less on experiences like travel, restaurant dining, concerts and professional sports attendance.
 
On the topic of bottled water. The human race has existed for thousands of years before bottled water. Hack! Bottled water in my part of the world is only maybe 15 or 20 years old. Consumer Report and many local municipalities has tested the local tap water and have come to the conclusion that it is perfectly safe. However, most people don't read Consumer Report and they probably don't read at all but they are convinced that by drinking bottled water they will live better and longer. I have seen seniors buying it. Many of them never walk outside, don't exercise and watch way too much TV but they sure drink their bottled water. In my daily walks outside I have noticed many empty plastic water bottles along the road. A "wonderful" source of pollution that did not exist maybe 20 years ago. I'm sure the guy that invented bottled water is laughing all the way to the bank everyday. He even has the guilable consumer convinced that this bottle water comes from glacial streams. I have often seen glacial streams. They are full of suspended debris from the glaciers. However, some places require you to boil water due to local pollution. In that case, buy a case but please don't throw it out of your car/truck! Thank you.

I keep a case of bottled water for emergencies. Last winter our pipes froze, by the time they thawed 3 days later we discovered busted pipes, so that took another 2 days of no water for repairs. My daughter age 27, mentally age 5 insists on drinking bottled water since then. No problem, when she goes to bed I refill the bottles and put them back on the shelf. 🤣
 
I was horrified when after the pandemic really hit, Costco was out of Kirkland (it's own brand) toilet paper for six months!! One day my son went for me and he sent me a picture. The back wall where they keep the paper products and water was completely empty. I guess they're trying to avoid that happening again. I had 3 packs left when we got another bundle two weeks ago. I also got another case of water and 2 cases of baby wipes, which they seem to only have on sale once a year. I will ask my son to pick up another bundle of TP and perhaps another case of water (since we are under a boil water warning) when he shops for me next month.
