Could you live without a computer?

My brother seems happy to live without a computer. However, there have been times when he had to deal with the government via computer. He had to get someone else to do it for him.

I've been in similar situations myself -- being more or less forced to do something by computer. But at least I'm reasonably computer literate and can use the computer at the library.

I can see me choosing a no-computer lifestyle. But I haven't. So who knows?

I don't own a mobile phone or want one, so I wouldn't miss those.

I don't have one of those tablety things, so I wouldn't miss those.

I once had a laptop, but I found it too fiddly for my big hands, so I gave it away.

I do have this desktop computer that does what I want, but if it conks out I won't replace it, I will then just look for an older persons group in my community for company.

I definitely could live without computers, I did so for the first 70 years of my life and I still know how to do things in the old way. 😊

Yes and No. Of course I can live without an internet connection but the world has changed so much because of the internet it would be much more unpleasant to try to live without it than it was say 10 years ago when the world still did not assume EVERYONE had internet access 24/7 like on a phone or a device. I would miss being able to order discontinued items which I can do online and I would miss being able to get immediate info on a variety of unimportant topics like sports scores. I would also miss the contacts I've made who I communicate with primarily online. It's not a killer but we've all gotten so use to it, to be without it would be a hardship for many.

I lived a great deal of my life without a computer or iPhone, I still don't own a cell phone. So yes, I could live without one...I, of course, would have to change how I do a few things, but no big deal. Not a "hardship, just an inconvenience...

I believe I could and I would and in many ways I would be better off for it. I do enjoy it though. I remember and I am sure you do also that when I wanted to do research I went to the library. Come to think of it, I kind of miss the trips to the library....:coffee:

Of course I could live without a computer but why would I want to...it saves me time by paying my bills, keeps me in touch with long distance relatives and friends and I can 'talk' to you guys. I can spend more time in the good outdoors with walks and gardening and just being there.

I thought in Canada it was all hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. Fly-fishing for huge trout and fresh run Salmon.
Perhaps you should log on your computer and check out what Canada is really like.

Re Avalon's post #15
I thought in Canada it was all hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. Fly-fishing for huge trout and fresh run Salmon. Now that is what I call living along with forum friends who live in the USA fly-fishing crystal clear waters for Bonefish. Now folk post that they could not live without spending hours on rubbish on a screen like they are missing something. The truth is that screen watchers are missing something if they are reasonably fit.

A bit about Canada:
There is a lot more to canada than fly fishing. We go out to the "tundra" to hunt for buffaloes. Then the buffaloes are skinned for clothes (buffalo hats, jackets and boots); the buffalo meat is dried on open fires (we don't have stoves in Canada) - the dried buffalo (pemican) is our main source of protein. Our main source of transportation are sleds pulled by buffaloes. In winter the lakes and river are frozen solid and it is impossible to fish during the winters. We have to ice skate between villages.

Ike's post 22: this is our toilets (we call it "out houses") It gets very cold in the winter.

I think we have an addiction problem here. Folks have lived for thousands of years before computers. Now, folks think they can't live without them. Sure, you can. Just like you can live without McDonald's or Amazon. Don't believe Microsolf and don't believe Apple. You can do it if you try. The trouble is the whole world has become zombies. The violence and shooting will continue due to the fact that not everyone has bought into the concept that in a perfect world we are all going to be starring at screens for 16 hours/day.

It occurred to me the other day that between first college and then work, I have been around computers for over 40 years now. And I have had a home computer for nearly 35 years and been online for almost just as long (Still remember my Prodigy number). So computers have been a part of my life for over 50 percent of my lifespan. So yes, I could live without a computer although I would have to find a new way to earn money in order to eat. The question is like asking me if I could live without a TV set. I could but would not want to.

Everybody thinks Canada is so wonderful -- that we spend all our time in someplace like Banff.

I smile and nod (or the Internet equivalent). They don't want to know that most of us live in cities and can't afford to go anywhere beautiful.
