The cruise ship industry which literally may have been killed off by the virus is now scrapping their ships.

Looking at the picture some of these ships some don't look that old. I guess one ship can produce more money as scrap than future cruises. It's a shame some were engineering marvels and spectacular.

The article said approximately 2500 persons are employed, dismantling those ships. That's temporary, once the ships are cut up & gone, their cut up & gone.

But just think about all the folks once employed on the ships, that are now unemployed, from all over the world.
All their spending ... lost, taxes effected. Granted it is a small part of it, but still an effect on the world economy .

My parents used to go on these every year at least once or twice. Me? You’d never catch me on one of these ever , whether that’s pre-COVID or post COVID.

There’s nothing more off putting then being packed on a ship like a can of sardines with a bunch of strangers. No thanks. It sounds horrible.

The cruise industry has "shot themselves in the foot." I know a lady that went on a cuise in 2003. There were 1200 passengers. Right after that cruise, the ship was scrapped. I think the blame was on the cruise industry which seemed to grow bigger & bigger year after year where ships of 5,000 were the standard. They became floating cities. However, the blame is also on the people that went on the cruises. They wanted a cheap holiday. I remember spending the winter in the Yucatan in the town of Puerto Progresso. We would get this cruise ship coming in with passengers that looked very much like "down & outers". It was a 3 day booze cruise & the people coming off that ship were really something to see. LOL I met a nurse from one of these cruise ships. She was from South Africa & said she was going to kiss the ground when she landed at home. She told me that the passengers are mostly drunk 1/2 hour when they board & stay drunk the entire trip. I have never gone on one of these & maybe iti's just as well.

I think the cruise ship industry deteriorated over time. We went on a wonderful cruise from Seattle to Alaska, some time in the 1990's. It was on the Holland America line, and the ship was immaculate, to the point where people were joking about it. Every time we left our cabin, the room steward rushed in to wipe things down, fluff up pillows, etc. You could have performed surgery on that ship!

Carnival has always been notoriously bottom-of-the-barrel. From what I've heard, their cruises have always been drunken orgies. So the "floating toilet" in Win's article may just be one step further down for them. I'm glad that passenger is suing. And I hope nobody dies of typhoid fever or cholera!

As the years have gone on since then, we've heard more and more stories of infections traveling through cruise ships like wildfire. Even before coronavirus, it was a risky business. I think those cruise ships have had their day; it's time to scrap them, or clean them up and turn them into public housing, as asp suggests.

I still find cruises to be the best way to vacation and see many places easily. I plan on taking another cruise once it's safe again. My wife and I want to take a cruise in the southeast Asia area where we haven't cruised before. If we hadn't gotten a good deal on a timeshare promotion stay this year in Jan/Feb we might have been on one of the ships in Asia that had problems. Glad we dodged that bullet.

I think different lines and different areas provide different cruise experiences. Our first cruise was for our honeymoon back in the early 90's and we did a four night cruise from Los Angeles out to Catalina Island, down to Ensenada and back to Los Angeles after a cruise around the channel islands. We were hooked because it was a lot of fun.

Unlike many cruisers we've met we have almost no desire to go back to a place we've cruised before. We look for cruises with lots of stops to places we haven't been before. The most boring cruises have been the ones we took in the Caribbean. The best have been Antarctica, British Isles, New England/Canada and Spain/Canary Islands/Madeira. Best line has been Celebrity but we've only been on that one once.

The food has been great, the rooms immaculate, endless activities, and most importantly the new places to see. The newer ships are monstrous. Just too many people and the chance of avoiding some wretched illness doesn’t make it worth it for us anymore. Worse would be being ill and locked in your room.

I have been on over 40 cruises, from ship as small as 46 passengers, to 3000+ ships. You cannot compare the experience on a 3 day booze cruise on Carnival with a 32 day cruise on Princess in a mini suite. I remember being docked next to a Carnival ship in Mexico, and seeing the tattoos and piercings on the women, let alone the men.
As far as that lawsuit mentioned above, it was 7 years ago, an bears no relevance to the disaster we just had with the Covid outbreak. We were booked on cruise for 13 March, and it was cancelled on 12 March.

Never been on a cruise ship. I've been on a barge from Alaska to Seattle where I had to sleep on deck. That was a lot more fun. out in the open air, than sleeping in a cabin on a soft bed on a cruise! Spit baths! Oh Yeah!

You haven't lived until you've cruised! Judge not until you've actually taken one.

Judge ? ... maybe not, but decide what may or may not work for me, due to information available, including the experiences of those who's opinions I trust .... Yes. As such I have never had the desire to cruise.

As I stated earlier , I hate to see so many jobs lost but ...... personally , I won't miss it.

And as noted, it may actually help clean up the oceans?

I don’t have to actually go on a cruise to KNOW I won’t like it. I judge things based on my ‘core’ likes and dislikes and that’s from knowing myself well. If I don’t drink , don’t like drunken crowds, then it’s a ‘no brainer’ that I won’t like this.

I’ve never been to a casino but know it’s not for me.
I don’t gamble, drink or like being around crowds.

If this is your type of thing, that’s ok. I’m not judging ‘you’ personally for enjoying it. To each their own. ✌️
