Cuba has lost power across the entire country/island

In 1959, Castro picked the wrong partner in the cold war. And the US was determined to not have a "Commie" country 90 miles from its coast. I believe Cuba's present problems are compounded by the U.S.'s resolve to rid Cuba of communism.

We need to end the trade embargo on Cuba. Why are we punishing them, simply because we don't like their economic-political system?
Don't forget that a portion of the "punishment" as you call it, is about human rights violations and continues to be one of the reasons for the ongoing embargo. It's not all about a political system.

Some of it has to do with land, buildings, cash, art, and other assets the Communists seized from the US government, US citizens, and former Cubans who became US citizens afterward.

There are amazing parallels with the assets glommed by carpetbaggers in post WW I Germany that ultimately gained the Nazis a lot of sympathy within the country and enabled their takeover.

I just saw this on the news. I feel so sorry for people who have to live without power, especially for an undetermined amount of time and if its during cold or hot temperatures. I did it for three days after Superstorm Sandy (it was a cold October) and couldn't take it anymore. Thank God my (then future) DIL and son had me come stay with them and my two oldest grands.

Obviously this affects peoples' food supplies and livelihoods. I hope the power is restored soon and they can keep that power plant up and running.

About 8-10 years ago, a small group of motorcyclist got together and booked a Cuba trip leaving from Canada. By club web-site, I was invited . [I declined] It was to be a 10 day overall trip . The guys that went, said the island is just beautiful, and the people warm ,open, & friendly.

The overall cost was [doable] and the Canadian host had his act together , it came off without a hitch. It became so popular , that shortly afterwards it came to be an event that 2-3 year reservations became necessary. The trips were small groups, 8 motorcycles . Now as I understand it, the waiting list time had just about doubled

I have kicked myself ever since.... now I'm too old and can no longer ride.

Of course it is... but the fact remains that it's one of the justifications being used to continue the embargo, right or wrong.
It's all about corporate interests.

China is guilty of widespread human rights abuses, yet they're one of our favorite trading partners. Corporations make billions of dollars every year off our trade with them, so there's no way we'd ever impose any penalties on them — no matter what they do. They're supplying Russia with military support while the U.S. is helping Ukraine, yet there are no repercussions.

Cuba, on the other hand, blocks corporate profit making ventures in their country, which is why we've had economic embargos ever since the '60s.

The United States must lift its economic, commercial and financial embargo on Cuba and remove the Caribbean nation from its list of State sponsors of terrorism — policies which have had devastating effects on the Cuban people and created severe obstacles for countries looking to engage in trade and investment with Havana, speakers told the General Assembly today.

It’s been 20 years since I went to Cuba. At the resort, ~20% were Americans (they don’t stamp their passports) and 75% were Canadians or European.

A physically beautiful country with friendly people. Their infrastructure was fragile. Those old buildings you see in photos aren’t in great shape.

The ex-Cubans and their decedents have become a significant anti-Cuba political bloc in Florida. Most of Cuba's wealthy fled the island in the 1950s.
I used to believe the same thing.

But then I had Cuban neighbors, the old man a factory worker. He said that Castro had seized his parent's house and car and modest bank account, and that they fled when his job was taken away and handed to a Partisan and the regime was going to send the family out to work for the State as farm labor.

It was never as simple as who had wealth. It isn't here within the US today either.
