A 25 year old drunk driver killed a car crash was called a dumba** in the obituary by the family. They wanted to use his death as a warning to others so other families wouldn't have to go through what they are going through. He was drunk and not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Bingo! Honesty is refreshing in this world of B.S.
Obituaries should be truthful, not the "Let's be nice & lie to everyone since he/she died" crap. We ALL die.

Drunk drivers usually kill innocents. This time, it worked out perfectly - just as when a street racer gets killed. It's not only justice, it makes driving safer for the rest of us.

Interesting! Are obituaries submitted by the family treated as quotes and printed exactly as written?
 

obituaries have to be paid for-I thought obits. were a type of public service, nope you
have to pay.
It that just in my county or is it a common practice across the nation.
 
Jerry --We have to pay for obits printed in our local paper. I grabbed the following comment and I think it would apply to our area.

"An average obituary can easily be $200.00-500.00. Costs vary by publication. Newspapers charge by the line and can average $450 for a complete obituary. The average obituary cost begins at $200.00 and increases due to the amount of content, including a photograph and the length of the obituary."
 
$200.00 says DavaA, that does not seem right.

Hard cash demanded when the survivors are in disarray.

I've been asked a lot of questions when viewing a near relative at funeral homes; I thought they channeled info to newspaper.
A lot of elderly people pay attention to obits for acquaintances, friends...

Charging for obits is poor form- what a mercenary group we are

It's always sickened me, too, Jerry.
 
And it isn't only obituaries. When my husband passed away, I went down to the DMV to have our car (jointly owned by both of us) reregistered in my name only. They charged me $100 just to change the name on the registration!

Not exactly a fortune, but it made me mad. Just to hit one or two keys on a computer, $100, really? And this would obviously be a hardship for somebody who is really strapped for funds. Which many new widows are.

Complete greediness.

Jer, That wasn't my question.I KNOW they must be paid for. QUOTES are to printed as written, (bad language,etc.) Are obituaries treated as quotes? The perodical prints them exactly the way they were submitted or do they change the wording if it doesn't fit their criteria?
if they can't change the wording, one could write a colorful obit!

Yup, in my area they start at 500 dollars and go up. Iā€™m not paying for one. If you know someone, then you usually know they are dead. šŸ˜‚
