Did any of you read MAD Magazine as a kid?

Didnt read the magazine but I do have a pack of MAD cards.
Similar game to UNO.

"What, me worry"? Goodness, I latched on to the early issues as soon as they hit the local sweet shop.

But at some point, they didn't seem to be all that funny anymore, likely because the humor was over my head.

I didn't see them for a long time, but recently I've seen them pop up at the supermarket.

I grew up in a small mountain town and the magazine was hard to get. Our drug store was the only place that had comic books and sometimes a Mad magazine. When I saw them and when I had some money, I would get one. They were great fun...

Early on in the '50s, I think when MAD was still a comic book, I got my mother to get me a subscription. It didn't come out every month, but only 6-8 times a year Evidently it had to change to a magazine format due to the comic book code of the day-- MAD being controversial.

And I distinctly recall reading several of the early "MAD Readers", which were in black and white, and were more nearly the size of Reader's Digest.

The early cartoonists were of extremely high caliber. Later on I'm not sure they had the same high quality cartoonists. It stopped being a monthly publication in 2018-- a helluva run!

Yes, I was a big fan of this magazine. Being a great fan of Johnny Cash, I remember they did a spoof of him and his songs.

Of course, we all had a sense of humour back then. Today, the politically correct out there would probably take all the copies and burn them. Sour Pus Politically Correct Buggers!

If I were still reading MAD, I would probably appreciate it. At the time it came on the scene, it was perfect timing for my age level. It was a comic book for an older generation, at least that is how I thought of it, but for all the crazy nonsense in it's pages, there was a kind of intellectual humor to it, at least to an 11 year old like myself.

Sometimes it required knowledge of current films and events. I remember its parody of the film Moby Dick, or Morbid Dick as the MAD version was called. I had never read anything that made me laugh so hard before that time. My parents of course didn't understand it. I would try to explain it to them, but they only seemed worried about me. I wondered at times if something was wrong with me, but I couldn't stop reading.

MAD magazine during its prime years had some pretty awesome, spot-on artwork and satirical parodies. It was what the hip kids read, and you had to have read the latest issue to be in on talk about it! And to think, it used to sell for 25 cents, cheap! 😸

Yep, in the late 50's and early 60's as I recall, I read them whenever I could get hold of one...
