I’m still waiting to do something dumb......now that was dumb!
Well, duh! It didn't occur to you to turn the engine off first? There's this thing called an alternator that converts mechanical energy into electricity. Zap! I thought guys were born knowing about cars. Wait. My grandson doesn't know how to change a tire. Never mind.I just bought a new Toyota Corolla in 1971 - $1,875.00. I'm 19, cruisin' along, enjoying the AM radio. I stop at a light & it suddenly starts idling rough - the whole car shaking. I know nothing about mechanics. I opened the hood & noticed 3 plug wires connected & one just hanging there. (Engine still on, of course). At the time, I didn't know what they were, but I figured I'd just snap that loose one back on over the spark plug & see what happens. Well, that worked, but as soon as I snapped it in, I got a big shock up my arm & I was thrown back onto the pavement.
My friends really LOL'd when I told them what happened & I said, "I don't get it; a car runs on gas, not electricity, so how did I get electrocuted?"
LOL! No, I didn't know what the alternator does & I never knew why it's called that. "Alternate" (to me), means a "different choice." I'm one of those guys who doesn't know & doesn't care about mechanical things. I also have no mechanical ability. I have changed a tire, however. I still don't know how we get light when we turn on a switch. I've had friends explain it to me, but when they're done, I ask, "So, how does the light go on?"Well, duh! And the Sisters would tell my mother that they never had a student who still couldn't play the piano after eight years of lessons and never got past John Thompson's First Grade Book. However, I do know that if sitting at the right place on the piano bench, middle C is directly across from the belly button. And I can read music.LOL! I think we all have certain abilities at birth & sometimes, we get a whole bunch of ability/talent in ONE specific area at the expense of other areas. My music teachers (starting at 4 years old) always told my mom, "I've never had a student play Bach at that age."
No, but it's sorta fun seein' ya try.And the Sisters would tell my mother that they never had a student who still couldn't play the piano after eight years of lessons and never got past John Thompson's First Grade Book. After years of designing long distance circuits for TPC, and later in my "career" migrating analog circuits to digital, I still cannot grasp how billions of voices can squeeze through skinny little telephone lines or float around in the air and get to where they're going.
We might all have certain abilities at birth, but after nearly 79 years, mine haven't surfaced. Sigh.
ETA: Alternator, like alternating current (AC). Then there's a generator, but those aren't used in cars anymore. A generator is, for all practical purposes, a dynamo. Does that simplify it for you?
