A chef’s hat is shaped the way it is for a reason:

Its shape allows air to circulate around the scalp, keeping the head cool in a hot kitchen.

Interesting, you learn something new every day.

Um ...

This may be a stupid question, but why not just wear nothing on your head? Wouldn't that allow maximum circulation?

Or if hair is a problem, a hair net?

Makes more sense the hairnet but i can't imagine a head chef would ever wear one, besides they are too sensitive as it is, i have worked with quite a few and you don't upset them

Yeah, I guess they don't want to end up looking like the lunch lady ...

... can't say as I blame them.

But yes, I've noticed head chefs tend to be a surly bunch ...

I like when chef's wear hats, it catches their sweat before it reaches my food. I'd like to see chef hats on all pizza makers too. :p

It used to be compulsory for all food handlers to wear head gear to cover there hair so no hairs get in the food, i know they still have to wear them in factories , why not when people are handling food in sandwich bars and restaurants.
One thing that has amazed me for years is why don't they have one person on the till ringing up the sales when you order sandwiches etc, instead the person serving you with your sandwich handles the money then immediately starts to make another persons sandwich, think of how many types of germs are on the money, one reason why i don't order sandwiches when out, specially after getting maggots in my chicken sandwich.

Ugh. You're right, Jillaroo. I remember reading where someone said they watched the person in the sandwich shop make a sandwich, answer the phone, and handle the money...all without changing the rubber gloves they're reguired to wear. Gross.
