I was asked at a Bar B Q today for church Key to open a can of beer, I didn't have one but then I got to wondering where the word came from, I did a Google on it and was quite surprised as you will be also,

We have two-a regular old "church key" and a very, very old bottle opener that is imprinted "Burgermeister- A very fine pale beer".....

Oh yeah. I remember 'church key' quite vividly from my childhood and younger adulthood. Doesn't seem all that long ago, either. :sentimental:

I've got a couple of them too, have had them forever. I'm sure some folks here have a P38 too, hubby keeps one on his keychain.

I have never heard them called a church key, we have several in the kitchen drawer, and use them for crown bottle tops and odd cans with no ring pulls.
I presume its a US name? we just call them a can opener I think,

The Carlsberg branded one (one came in each case of Carlsberg) was the exact thickness to measure of the rack operating distance needed to set up the 20mm Hispano cannons in various British aircraft of the 40s and 5os.

The Allsops and Teenents ones were no good and would cause gun jams.

Not many people know that!

Started my drinking days with a church key, kids have it much easier today as with everything else...:D

I had heard that expression before, and do remember having and using that style of bottle opener, tho have a bit fancier version now.
Not all bottles are twist off now either, so it's still handy to have an opener around. Yes, Ralphy, kids do have an easier time getting beer bottles open, no need to slam it against a kitchen counter or try to open it with teeth. LOL :D

"Burgermeister Brewery was in San Francisco for a number of years and is now closed. My step father retired after working for them 25 years. You may have a collectible worth a little money.

When I read this thread, it made me realize how old I am and how things change. It had the same effect on me that I felt when I heard a young group of kids ask, "Who are the Beatles?" I started to drink beer in 1959. Back then, every red blooded American guy had a "Church Key" on his car key ring!! I also Still have my P38!!

Remember these can openers where you had to literally chop out the top of the can?
I've still got one. It works in a pinch, but not fun.

It;s a sobering thought that the vast majority who click on the little icon that represents "save" in many programmes have no idea what it represents!

Anybody still using floppies, not as an artefact like a tube radio, but still in use?
