Do you own a firearm?

Okay, but what do they do when it's the middle of the night and they hear someone bust in the front door, then footsteps coming down the hall toward their bedroom, and it's too late for 911 to respond to a phone call?
A hypothetical situation with which I am totally unfamiliar.

Nope. When I was very young I used to envy my brother his 22 rifle. We used it to target shoot. Now I work under the philosophy that if someone wants my stuff that bad they can just take it. If they are going to kill me I hope they are an excellent shot.

Somebody said why would you need a gun if the person assailing you doesn’t have a gun assuming that a bad guy would obey all of your laws.
They have banned 170 different types of guns in Illinois and yet you see when some killer is caught that they had all kinds of banned guns.
That is because the kind of people who would assault you don’t care about any bans or laws.
Those laws only add more risk to decent citizens who obey laws because the bad guys know we carry inferior weapons and try to obey stringent laws.
I looked up how much that reward they are offering for information about the killer or killers in Australia. That $500,000 is only worth three hundred and something in American dollars.
I’m glad that you people in Australia have the polite kind of burglars who simply steal from you.
We have the crazy kind here in the states who would just as soon try to kill you as look at you, whether they have a gun or not.

That's unsurprising.

that was my point actually and link by Mack shows that - not that other people obey laws but that the laws make it much harder for other people to obtain guns - and thus gun culture is different and yes, most burglaries are not by armed burglars, they are opportunistic theives, not killers.

the laws dont add more risk t o decent citizens - if that were the case Australia's gun death rate would be much higher than USA';s - but we all know that is not the case.

so yes unsurprising, as Mack said, that people here do not feel the need to have a gun in case somebody somehow busts through their locked door in middle of the night and comes down the hallway after them.

I meant hypothetical to my circumstances.

If you live in an unlocked house, as I mostly do, then the concept of a break in is rather unreal. The house I grew up in always had the back door propped open to allow the two small doggies access. It was only locked when we went on holidays and then it was a scramble to find the key.

My house has also been very easy to enter. I hate locks because their main effect has always been to lock me out, causing me the inconvenience of climbing through a window. If a burglar did break in he would be very disappointed with the pickings. I can imagine myself offering him a cup of tea and a couple of biscuits to make up for his waste of time.

Seriously, I do not fear burglars. I would be more afraid of having a lethal weapon somewhere in the house.

They don’t list murder rates as much as they do violent assaults.
Sounds like when the mayor of Chicago is acting like the crime rate is less this time than last year they just juggle the books.
Seems like they advise people to not go out at night in a lot of cities in Australia because of the dangerous youths that prowl the streets.
Most people wouldn’t go to Alice Springs if their life depended on it.
Murder rate is up in Fairfield of Sydney.
How about your violent gangs over there are they any different than the ones around here?
Shop keepers in one city are scared after one was stabbed to death.
Yes! I feel reasonably safe too because I don’t live in a bad area either.

I have never been attacked by a really violent person but I have been in fear of my life a few times because of loose dogs.
One a pitbull that didn’t want me to look across the street at it and a couple of Great Danes that escaped their yard during the hot weather.
I haven’t defended myself with my gun and probably never will I belong to a self defense forum and I don’t know if any of them will ever use a gun for self defense.
We just keep getting older and dying from old age and health problems.
Just because we have the right to defend ourselves doesn’t mean that it’s like the Wild West here in America.
I was keeping an eye on the crime in the U.K. for a while and once guns were banned there the hoolagans started using all kinds of other weapons to commit violent crime.
I told my wife that I would do rather be shot than to have acid thrown in my face.
That was one of the weapons of choice for a while over there. They would throw acid in someone’s face while passing and rob them.
If someone threw acid on me I would at least have a chance to defend against them.

We had a scare once when a man was murdering teen girls, so my husband kept the rifle ready, just in case he chose our apartment seeking young girls. We lived in an apartment complex in the area of the killings with college age girls. Once the man was caught and arrested, the rifle was put away and still is put away. Unfortunately, five teen girls and one teen boy were murdered before the suspect was caught.

No, and don't plan to. Am a small, medically fragile, non-threatening, peaceful person. No others have ever threatened me or my modest assets in ways I might consider such.
you don't necessarily have to have it to use as a weapon. I don't... I use mine to shoot at the rifle range...

Funnily enough since the o/h has been gone, and we used to go tothe range together, I haven't been and only yesterday I was thinking about selling the guns...

Nope. I'm too bad tempered.

Interesting how you are trying to convince me Australia is so dangerous

I live in a very ordinary area of an industrial town. not somewhere particularly good or safe - just very average.

lots of people go out at night in Australia, including me, both in my home town and when I am in our capital city

There are not violent gangs in my town, to my knowledge - and even if there were, they would not be armed and the chances of them or anyone randomly busting down my locked front door during the night and coming after me are miniscule

if you feel the need you own a gun for self defence where you live - good for you. I guess you have good reason. I'm not arguing with that or telling you what conditions are like in your country

I simply answered the question about Australia - where people do not feel such need. Also with good reason. Despite yo u thinking you know more about the country than we who live here do.🤷‍♀️
